Re: sound exhaust

Pre-2003 Sportster mufflers would be preferable as they do not have crossover tube holes that would need to be covered. What are you looking to do to the seat? Recover or replace? There are a lot of replacement covers on ebay or Saddlemen Seat Skins will do the trick.

Re: replacing timing belts

If all you are doing is the belts, you won't need anything for the water pump unless you jump in a little deeper than necessary. Anything else... patience.

As far as the fuel pump is concerned, yes, but not much more.

Re: New coils aren't the same

If the spark plug wires do not thread onto the coils, the coils are not original... someone swapped them out in the past.

Re: Like to put a 84 gl1200 in a 83 gl1100 frame

You will need to wire it in from scratch. I used the black/white wire from the coil as a trigger wire to a new relay that I installed and wired the rest of the relay as needed and then ran wires out to the fuel pump as needed.

Re: heat shiled for 1984 Goldwing

Another option is to remove or modify the fairing lowers to allow more air into the motor. So the answer is to a) redirect the heated air away from your body, and b) wear more protective, heat-insulating clothing. The more air getting into the engine area will mean that the hot air has to go somewh...

Re: GL1200 darkside question

I have a Classic 165/80R-15 on the rear of my 87 Interstate. Before that, it was on the rear of my 81 1100 and before that, it was on the rear of my 84 Standard. I think I paid somewhere near $60 for the tire. All totaled, I have just over 11,000 miles on the tire right now and I will probably get a...

Is the tail light working? If I remember correctly, the tail light and the dash lights work off of the same fuse.

Re: Large plugin to the fairing

That appears like things may have been getting a little hot in there (I can't tell for sure from just that picture). If so, there is no amount of cleaning that will make it look new again. The pins can be removed from the block. They have a little barb that needs to be depressed and the wire and pin...

Re: Anyone been turned away from CycleMax?

The devil is in the details... especially the return policy. If a buyer doesn't read it before buying something, they have no reason to complain about the outcome. CycleMax's report policy plainly states: "Unopened items in their original packages can be returned for a refund with no questions asked...

Re: 1987 GL1200 Fuel Petcock - one year only - HELP!

First thing is to finally get myself at least a workbench top drill press to successfully remove the rivets and then drill and tap the holes. I've done this before on other petcocks with a hand held drill and it's not easy. And on those, and extra petcock was not hard to find if I screwed up. Not s...

Re: 1987 GL1200 Fuel Petcock - one year only - HELP!

I ran into the same issue you are seeing... parts listed as 84-87.

I took mine apart, flipped the gasket over and turned in 180 degrees and put it back together again. Hasn’t been a problem since then. The damaged portion is no longer in an area that seals... something to consider.

Re: GL1100 to GL1000 frame

Everything will fit, but will require some minor... okay, a bunch of modifications. Something makes me think the 1000 swingarm pins need to be machined down to fit inside the 1100 swingarm as they are different sizes ant the 1100 pins do not fit the 1000 frame.

I don't care why they are for sale, I am just happy to buy them. I paid $500 for my 87 Interstate and the guy said he was selling it so cheap because the breaks were so hard to bleed. Took me 10 minutes. That was the best $500 I ever spent!

Re: single carb conversion

When you look down the throat of the carb, you should see the brass tube that shoots raw fuel into the throat whenever the acceleration pump is activated. Where is it pointing? Straight down the middle? If so, bend it (it will actually rotate in it's mounting hole) so that fuel sort of bounces off o...

Re: single carb conversion

Heating the manifold is not necessary. Some people think it is the ONLY way to run a single carb and that you will not get it to run right without the manifold being heated... I don't have any manifold heat and I have ridden in temperatures far below freezing to extreme summer heat and I never had a...
