Brake light/License Plate bracket

My '83 GL1100A has the usual chrome lightbar around the saddlebags and a chrome piece on the back for the license plate. Both are in pretty bad shape after all these years and I would like to just remove them and go back to the stock look. Seeing the back of Wingadmin's bike in his videos I like the...

Re: heat on legs

I get quite a bit of heat on mine as well. I have two sets of deflectors, an upper set to blow air on my body while riding and a lower set just to cool my legs.

Re: Tipover

I was at a dealer during a customer appreciation day, so they had tons of people there, burgers, events, etc. This fellow rode in on a Ducati, pulled up to a group of people, stopped and for some odd reason never put a foot down. The bike proceeded to tip over with him on it. Had it been me would ha...

Odd Speedometer Issue

'83 Aspencade with the LCD instrument panel. I start riding the bike and everything works great. After about 15-20 minutes of riding the speedometer stops registering. It actually counts down from the speed I'm doing to 0 and then will stay on 0. Occasionally it will climb up to 8 or 10mph then go r...

Re: Starter is seized up

These starters don't have a bendix like an automobile starter so it can't be stuck in the forward position. I'm sure the guru's on here will correct me if I'm wrong but after rebuilding the starter on my '83 I'm fairly sure what keeps the starter from turning when the bike is running takes place on ...

Re: Which helmet

The helmet style is a lot of personal preference. I myself use a half helmet, but its one I had before I bought my Goldwing. In the future I plan on getting the intercom so I will be moving to a 3/4 helmet for ease of installation and use. I've seen a lot of GW riders use the modular or full face to...

Re: Engine overheating

I just bought a 1980 GL 1100 Interstate, the engine runs very well but runs hot while moving even at highway speeds. When stopped with the engine idleing the temp goes to normal as soon as you take off the temp goes up and peggs out. Coolant level is fine no radiator or water pump leaks, the previo...

Re: Mirror won't hold adjustment

I'm not sure on the '86 models but I had this issue with my '83 Aspencade and I just replaced the bad mirror. It was less than $20 for a new one, which changed the design. The new one has springs on all the adjustment screws so they remain tight, the old one didn't and as the screws loosened over th...

Hondog

While at Laconia NH this year for bike week I found the most unusual GL1000. I guess you could definitely say this one is full dressed, including 2 sets of antlers on the windshield. It's appropriately named "Hondog". I can't believe the genuine saddle seat is comfortable.

Re: engine heat

Like Raycw mentioned, not running a thermostat keeps the coolant cool, not necessarily the engine. Engines are designed to run at a certain temperature range. The thermostat will let the engine warm up to that range, then work to keep it there. Not only does it give the coolant time to absorb heat f...

Re: Center stand dragging in turns

Seems suspicious that you're able to put 60lbs of pressure into the shocks. If the seals were blown (yes, I know that joke) you would think they wouldn't hold pressure. With mine I can definitely feel and see it when I change the pressure in the shocks. I wonder if you've got a plugged air line or s...

Re: New member but no Gold Wing yet

Unless you absolutely have to have the airbag model, I would look for one a couple years old. Brand new 2010s sell for $25k and up but I've seen 2007s and 2008s in like new condition for $15k. That $10k savings adds up. On the other end of the spectrum, I bought my '83 Aspencade a couple months ago ...

Re: Center stand dragging in turns

I'm about 220 and my girlfriend is 120, with both of us on the bike I never drag anything during turns with my 83 Aspy. I've had it bottom out on a couple bumps but thats it. I suspect your shocks are gone.

Re: Small bike for wife?

A lot of people feel that something like a Rebel 250 is a great beginner bike, but I disagree. I a lot of the MSF courses use them, which is fine, but once a person gets used to riding a short period of time they're going to want something bigger. Something that can easily handle 55mph traffic or ri...

Re: GL 1100 solenoid question

I had it on the bike for a couple weeks. I replaced it because I had gotten a used OEM one for free. There was nothing wrong with the Ford one, and I still have it just in case. The only reason I replaced it was the OEM one fits next to the battery better. I would actually look at relays from a trac...

Re: Fuel leak and valve cover leak

There really is nothing higher up from the petcock other than the fuel tank itself. If that's leaking, its a job to get it out to replace it.

As far as the valve covers, they are fairly simple. Just look at the relevant parts of this how-to: http://www.goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewt ... =11&t=2229

Re: Won't start

My bike just clicks once when I try to start it. The Honda shop told me it's probably the relay. I tried to short the terminals on the relay to test it like they said to, and it still only clicks. I'd hate to waste 93 dollars on a new relay if that's not the problem. Could there be anything else wr...

I too would look into the fairing harness itself. My bike sat for only a year and a half and the mice had a nice home built in the fairing. They chewed some of the wiring while they were in there.

Re: How to adjust your valve clearances

Thanks for another great how-to. I'm going to do mine as soon as I stop riding it for a few minutes, I noticed some valve tick lately, so I know they're a little out. Patience is a virtue, and a money saver. I didn't want to wait for cover gaskets so I picked up a pair from a dealer today, $22 each!...

Ok, I have to ask. What brand gloves do you use? I purchased a box at the auto parts store and they constantly break. Yours look a lot heavier than mine.
