Re: final drive

Pretty much covered here. 88-89 years were different from the later 1500 final drives. 1200 drive shaft is used.

Re: Timing question

No. If you’re feeling resistance turning the crank it is either hydrolocked or a valve hitting a piston, or worse. It won’t take much to bend a valve. To see if it’s hydrolocked, pull the plugs, turn kill switch to STOP and see if it turns. If it is, you may get a shot of fuel out of a plug hole. If...

Re: Can I tow my GL 1200 in neutral?

Wading in to the fray, how would oil get up to the bearing at the output shaft in the rear case? I replaced mine once but don’t remember. Is it sealed on both sides?

Re: Order of tune up ?

Check belt pulley timing marks? Both pulleys’ “up” marks up at T1 and outside marks lined up? Check that, then valve adjust. Done a valvecadjust before? Remember there are two T1 marks. First T1 when intake valve on number 1 just closes and on the mark, second T1 360 degrees crank rotation later whi...

Re: Order of tune up ?

Check firing order from coils? Easy to get wires wrong if they were apart. Right coil fires cylinders 1+2, left fires 3+4. Firing order is 1-3-2-4. Could also check colors at points/condenser connections if they have them.

Re: New in the GL world. A few things if anyone has any input.

Idle issues sound like carb/ fuel to me. Look in the plenum through the air filter cover. It should be dry. If wet, you could have a leaking plenum half gasket, or carb-to-plenum seals, or more often maladjusted or leaking floats. It is pretty important to turn the fuel off at the petcock all the ti...

Re: Drive train gear slipping

Mine will do it once or twice but as Wingadmin suggests it’s from not fully pulling the gear shift up all the way. It could be a worn or slightly bent shift fork. Repair is a full tear down.

Re: engine interchangeability

The 1200 is where the interchangeablity gets fun! I have a 1200 in my 77 with 77 heads, cams, carbs. It rips. Considerable shift in torque and hp. The 1200 from 85-87 will drop right into the 1000’s with a few tight fits, but engine mounts are the same. The 84 1200 will fit into 1100’s but 1000’s ne...

Re: Tires Tires Tires so confusing

I haven’t used any cleaners on the tire. Just car wash soap. Always inflated 38-40 lbs. I picked it up off Craigslist from a guy who bought it but found out later it was too big for his bike. It was never mounted and stored away from the sun. I’m not sure what to think. I’m thinking of going darksid...

Either leaky float valves, leaky plenum gasket, or leaking carb-to-plenum seals. Failure to remedy can lead to a bent rod. Ask me how I know.

Re: GL1200 Carb issues

Never saw the inside of a 1200 fuel pump, but the earlier ones could be a hiding spot for debris to “infect” your carbs again.

Another easy to neglect spot on the tank is the very top. If your metal rescue isn’t covering it, you could still have debris there.

A motor is a motor, right? Oil is oil, right? Not for motorcycles. Goldwing clutches will slip with most automotive oils. It cannot gave friction modifiers. There are Goldwings at 400k with original clutches in them.

Re: Wont Start... Bad Dyna III Electronic Ignition Box?

The Dyna 111 are very reliable. The next generation has issues with solder coming undone under a black cover on the plate assembly. The newest version has been out 3-4 years, I think and it is solid state. I have heard of only one failure with them. Personally I think the older Goldwings charging sy...

Re: Wont Start... Bad Dyna III Electronic Ignition Box?

With just a test light, do you have power going into the box? Red wire, I think. The early ones were often powered through the turn signal, so a blown fuse results in a dead bike. There is a test procedure at DynaTechonline. I’ll try and locate it for you. Dyna is great to test it for you, but it ta...

It doesn’t look like the source of your leak. (Maybe leaks?) It looks as though it is coming from the front cover area? There are a few places which can leak oil there.

Re: Cut engine guard ?

I’ve done as you posted for the same reason. I left the bottom section longer to protect the head in the event of a tip over. An option I never found but thought would be nice, would be a foot pad to go in the lower opening. It could give your legs some variety stretches in longer rides.

Re: Backfire when ignition switched on

I have a 77 that does this randomly. Dyna ignition? A suggested cause was that the ignition was turned off, but the motor still slows to a stop near a compression point. When you turn the ignition on, the points or electronic ignition has rotated into a position signaling it to fire. If it’s in the ...

I’m pretty sure the heads are all the same. Years ago I saw a post of someone showing different valves in the 83. I believe they were flat rather than dished. Looking at the parts fiche, they do call for different part numbers for the valves. I also seem to recall a slight boost in compression ratio...

A way I have seen suggested is to put the springs on a flat surface and then the slides on top. (So they’re upside down.) You might find that they compress close to the same amount.
