Re: GL1100 to GL1000 frame

Wingriders post at NGW was pretty detailed. An option for you though, is to mount the 1100 motor in the 1000 frame. It will take a mod in the back upper cross tube. Some guys just notch half of the tube and weld it shut. Your 1100 front end from the triple tree down will slide right in. I’ve done it...

Re: eBay dirty fuel pump causes carb disaster - please help !

Carefully remove the top cover of the pump and clean debris as well. There’s probably more there and under the diaphragm as well. Going this far, don’t stop at third base. Check the tank as well.

Re: What in the...please don't say head gasket

Mine will often leak after sitting from the coolant cross tubes that run from the top center of the motor over to the elbows which go into the head. There are o-rings in each end of the cross tubes. They often just seep a little out. It is hard to see and many have been fooled thinking it’s the head...

Re: Starter valve?

Pre84 didn’t have starter valves. The mechanism is kind of hokey, but it all will come loose. The hook at the bottom needs to be free to turn roughly 180 degrees. The trick is taking off the black nut which is plastic. The starter valve will then come out laterally. Watch for a small stainless washe...

75-77 had the more aggressive cams. Some 75 cams had a shorter stub for the tach drive and fuel pump. I think 77 had black cover plates , but not positive.

Re: OK - re my GL1100 - but greater knowledge needed.

WAG suggestion: check the vacuum advance. Maybe the tube fell off, was blown off. Or you have a leak in the canister on the back of the motor. I say this because you say it runs good to 3-4K, right where the advance should be moving/ moved. Kind of a pain because of its location but, if the tube loo...

Re: Final drive issue? please read entire post

Just a quick thought: the 1200's use a spring on the forward part of the shaft which pushes and keeps the shaft engaged in the final drive and ujoint. I'm wondering if that spring has failed or its retainer. Maybe check parts fiche to see what I'm talking about. Unfortunately I don't think it can be...

Re: How to set the timing GL1000

If you had both heads off, it won't matter. You just get the belts on with the pulleys aligned at T1 and start setting valves. Then make a full rotation to T1 again and set the second set of valves. The manual says to set the first set of valves when the T1 mark aligns just after the intake valve fo...

Re: Lester Wheel sizes

A 170 is quite a bit more than recommended on a three inch rim and although the swingarm might accommodate an 18" with a 170 or 180, it may hit the frame where the fender mounts. The bigger concern is the bead rolling out of its groove underway. I have a 1200 swingarm in a 1000 frame with a 1500 fin...

Re: How to set the timing GL1000

Then you're fine. Whatever T1comes up with your pulleys having both "Up" marks up, becomes your first T1 to set valves. Do you have a manual to know the order?

Re: How to set the timing GL1000

Heads and cams installed? Safest way is to remove the belts, cams and carriers, or loosen them way out almost to the end of the threads of the six bolts holding the cams on. Then rotate the crank to T1. Then back the crank up 45 degrees or so. Keep track of which way you rotate it. Now the pistons a...

Re: Welding on my Gl frame

A separate ground is a good safety item. If you end up on a damp floor and become a better path for the flow of electrons, you'll become the ground and won't be around. With rubber tires and either the kick or side stand on the ground doesn't ensure it's a good path. On a block of wood makes it even...

Loosen, remove, clean, check for wear, regrease, replace swingarm bearings. One side worn can cause this.

Re: HELP - Bad knocking after head gasket fix

Remove the valve cover and look to see if all valve adjusters are in place and look to see if the valve keepers are all in place. (The two halves which are sandwiched around the valve) If they weren't fully seated, they can come flying out. It would cause quite a clatter. Look for other damage such ...

Timing marks on the belt pulleys line up as they should with T1? Some pulleys have two marks. If yours does, it's the one with the arrow beside it.

Kill/Run switch set to run? Check fuses first?. Use a dgm and check for continuity. Old fuses can look okay but be corroded internally.
