Re: 2015 Goldwing (40th Anniversary) disappointment

I don't mean to counter anything said in any way. I have no argument whatsoever with any opinion expressed, however I just looked at the bike mentioned in the post for the first time just now. My changing bikes recently has a lot to do with the subject. Luxury motorcycles. Bluetooth and smartphone ...

Re: Michelin Commander II Tires

As I mentioned earlier, I have a good friend who rides a Victory Vision. The Victory touring bikes use the identical radial tires as our GL1800s. He tried the Michelin Commander IIs on his Vision about 2 or 3 years ago and hasn't looked back. He rides a lot of miles each year and has just mounted hi...

Re: Michelin Commander II Tires

So let's compare load/speed ratings: Dunlop D250 Rear = 74H which is 827 lbs @ 41 PSI Dunlop Elite 3 = 80H which is 992 lbs @ 41 PSI Bridgestone G704 = 74H which is 827 lbs @ 41 PSI Michelin Commander II = 81H which is in excess of 992 lbs. So to me, load rating is NOT the issue here and speed ratin...

Re: 2015 Goldwing (40th Anniversary) disappointment

Lots of complaints about what is probably the best touring motorcycle ever designed and marketed. Kinda hard for me to understand. I've owned every iteration of the Gold Wing. And I've enjoyed each and every one of them. Plus they just kept getting better and better. No I have not owned an 1800 buil...

Re: Michelin Commander II Tires

I have had the pleasure of running The Michelin Commander II's on my 2008 GL for 3 yrs now. I also ride and average of 15,00 to 20,00 miles a year. I am pleased to report that I am very pleased with the average mileage I've gotten from these tires. I have never gotten less than 15,000 on a set of C...

Re: Michelin Commander II Tires

I have tried every tire I have been able the find on the market. Dunlop, Bridgestone, Avon, Metzer, Skinko, and Michelin that offers a tire size that will work on a GW. The Michelin Commander II tires are the best I have found for performance and life of tire. I have been reading alot about CT tire...

Re: Michelin Commander II Tires

I've heard a lot of good reports on the Commander II tires. A good friend of mine runs them on his Victory Vision which uses the identical tires as the Gold Wing. He gets close to 20,000 miles out of the rear tire. He is not a canyon carver but then we don't have canyons in Iowa. But he does ride wi...

Re: Synthetic oil question.

I use Mobil 1 full synthetic and have for years. It doesn't state that it's motorcycle oil per se. I use 10W/40 and it has no friction modifiers. Change it and filter every 5000 miles. And I've never had an oil related issue. I've been riding Goldwings since 1981. Tried other makes including a Harle...

Thanks for the info, wingpilot96. But it was the firmware I was looking for. Map wise, I'm set. But I was wondering what the latest Firmware version is. My version is 2.20.
Thanks again.

Latest Firmware for 2009 Navi

I have a 2009 GL1800 with Navi and XM. Been looking all over for information on Firmware Versions. My Version is 2.20. I wonder what the latest version is and where do I find it. This info is probably buried somewhere in this site but I've searched every way I can think of and not coming up with ans...

I'm so glad to have found another oil thread. I figured that everyone felt that this horse has been totally beat to death. But I guess not. I agree.....forum entertainment at it's finest. :D :D :D Oh, by the way, I run oil in my bike and change it and the filter every 3 to 4 thousand miles. This has...

Did my posts not get on here? Flyn Tiger, Two posts on March 30 and the post of August 1, 2014 when you just got done with your 14 state ride. Those are the last 3 posts I've seen from you on this thread. By the way, FT, instead of riding on one car tire in the rear, I'm now riding on two. Went the...

Re: Gold Wing tires

Need some input on tires for my 2013 F6B. I always used Metzlers on my 82 and loved them. What are some thoughts on Metzlers for the F6B. It has been several years since the 82 and things and maufacturer's change. I haven't seen much input on the site about Metzlers. I would appreciate any input fr...

Re: Ethanol! Yes or No?

Wingrider, you seem to have a pretty good understanding about the ethanol/octane controversy. I take it from that, that you believe fuel with an ethanol content shouldn't be used in an older Goldwing, I agree with that, and that fuel with a higher octane rating helps to prevent pre-ignition. Since ...

Re: Ethanol! Yes or No?

Very interesting topic. I too HATE ethanol for the same reasons as HawkeyeGL1200. They call it a 'renewable fuel' but without fossil fuels to 'cook' it, ethanol is unsustainable as it requires more energy to convert than it gives. Thus we have an energy loss. Whereas, when we pump oil out of the gro...

That's really cool. I'm sure he's proud of it. Looks like a very nice and clean 1981 Wing or thereabouts. I had an '81 Interstate in it's day and I loved that bike.
Congratulations, Corba.

Re: Gold Wing tires

I ride 2up 99% of the time. I do mostly secondary roads and not many interstates unless I am on a long trip. I always got 15-17k out of my E3's and could get more but the ride gets kinda rough. I am just turning 94k on my current Wing. I have no complaint with the E3's except they do get loud after...

Re: Car tire on the back of a GL 1800 2014 part 2

I've been on the "Dark Side" for quite a while now, and I'll never go back to a MC tire. I'm using the Michelin ALPIN Zero pressure (run flat) 195/55-16. It's supposed to be for winter use and has a softer compound, but I'll never be able to tell. The tire is absolutely the best change to the GL180...

Re: Car tire on the back of a GL 1800 2014 part 2

Those of you using the Michelin Alpin ZP 195/55-16 on the rear of your GL1800s, could you please weigh in and let me know which direction you are running it, and/or if it seems to make any difference. As shown in the pics here, it seems it would be possible to run it either for better traction, or ...

Re: GL1800 transmission complaints

I understand mechanical things better than most. I also understand arrogance. Arrogance comes from sitting atop of those striving to be you. We think we have the best, so why work to make it better? Complacency creates stagnation, which allows others to overtake our position. As for the transmissio...

Re: Noise when cornering

Every E3 that I've owned (and I've owned quite a few) have made a cornering noise after a number of miles. However, I kept putting them on because I've always had pretty good luck and service from them. That said, after a number of seasons of studying it I finally decided to take the jump to the dar...

Re: Car tire on the back of a GL 1800 2014 part 2

I agree with NKYWinger regarding the pressure. I run at 31 PSI solo and 2 up. I just change the suspension setting on the bike to Mem2 which is set to 18 where Mem1 is set to 10.

You'll love that Michelin. :D :D :D

Re: Car tire on the back of a GL 1800 2014 part 2

Bikerguy, I'm beginning to wonder if you would be happier with a runflat tire. If you don't like the feel of your non runflat unless you're running very high pressure, I believe you will really like a runflat. There's nothing squishy about a runflat's side wall. So my suggestion would be to order th...

Re: Car tire on the back of a GL 1800 2014 part 2

I'm afraid I can't relate to your problem of riding in the lane depression. I've not noticed it to be a problem and I've been on a lot of different roads. That said, I think your tire pressure of 52 psi is considered the max cold tire pressure when running it at the maximum load. Usually with a non ...

Re: Activate Nav while moving

After thinking about the pros and cons of this modification, I came to the conclusion there really was no good reason not to do it. I went with the all under the seat option after I picked up a 275-248 relay from Radio Shack for a meager $4.49. The only reason to go with the second option is that wi...
