Re: Bike starts only if in neutral?

I have had it happen several times on the 1800's I have owned. Couple of times after riding several hundred miles in the rain. What happens is the micro switches in the clutch lever get grime between the contacts. Spray them clean with silicon spray or something similar and should take care of it.

Re: Hauling an 1800 across country

You are about 40 miles south of me. I ride across Merritt Island (couple of miles from your backyard) quite often and stop and view the manatees. Maybe we can meet up for a ride after you get settled. There are about 3 different groups of Wing riders here. The Prowlers are extremely active this time...

Re: Hauling an 1800 across country

Thanks for all the reply's... Some great ideas here. Interesting I didn't get a notification! It is rainy season in California and I have some stuff that shouldn't get wet and some things that might tempt some joker at night while I am stopped at a hotel in my 6x12 open trailer. Getting the GW into...

Re: Hauling an 1800 across country

If you don't have a chock, run a strap over the left side of the top of the triple tree and to the front left corner of the trailer. Do the same over the right side of the triple tree. Also remove the side covers to access the frame. Run straps from the frame on each side of the bike. Also, I run 2 ...

Re: Coolant smell long after coolant change

Very easy to make it overflow when refilling after a change. Seems like it took a month for the smell to go away last time I changed.

Re: Front wheel no longer spins as freely.

If you can make the wheel rotate through 3 rotations or so it is probably ok. The brakes are supposed to make a little contact. If they seem to be grabbing it might be necessary to loosen the pinch nuts and axle bolt and make sure the wheel is aligned and follow the instructions in the manual to tig...

Re: TPMS Error

It's called Boyle's Law. PV=NRT. Been so long since I recalled it. Cold air is much denser. Pressure will decrease in the cold. When your tire warms from riding, the pressure comes back up as the air expands. This is completely normal. I live in the NE and experience what you speak of when I fail t...

Re: TPMS Error

My '13 has done this since day 1. Probably 3 to 4 times a year. I have found from reading posts on several other boards, that this is a common problem. Sometimes it will stay on till I turn the bike off. I have read that alarm systems can trigger it. Now I just ignore it and don't pay attention to i...

If it turns out to be serious there is a guy in FL that has fixed a ton of bikes with the "Ghost Shifting" problem. He is a lot cheaper than the dealer. His business can be found at justwings.com.

Re: Rear brake and gas mileage

Up there in NJ you should probably be getting some cool evenings. So, after a short 20 or 30 mile ride the rotor should still be warm but not so hot that you can't hold on to it for a few seconds. At least that has been my experience with my last 2 wings.

Re: FRONT LIGHTS FOR GL

I do know of one that I would stay AWAY from, and that would be the SILVERSTAR's. They are definitely brighter than the ordinary halogen, but that's because they overdrive them with a smaller filament that won't last as a result. [/quote +1 on the Silverstar. They are junk, at least for use on a wi...

Re: Getting low gear

I am going to tell what I do that helps. I am NOT telling you to do this because you asked us not to tell you how to shift. I simply blip the throttle and raise the RPM's a little and it drops into 1st a lot easier. Also if I am on flat ground I have no problem, and had just soon take off in 2nd as ...

Re: Trunk Won't Close

As i remember you can adjust the latches to make the a little looser and all the trunk to close. As to it locking; if you previously had it set to lock and press the open button of the fob and shut the trunk back, it will automatically lock. The only way to keep it from locking is to open the trunk ...

I don't consider myself a lightweight. But, I have a piece of pipe that I slide over the end of the handle of my ratchet to use a a "cheater". The torque for the lugs is supposed to be 80 ftlb.

Re: GL 1800 starter problems

First of all: Are you tryin to start it in gear while holding in the clutch? If so shift to neutral and see if it starts. If so it is almost certainly the micro contact in the clutch lever. Spray them clean with dielectric cleaner. I have had to do it every so often on both wings I have owned. I fre...

Re: Can a tire size change enable me to drop about 500 rpm?

I am running a 195x60x16 and it dropped mine some but I can't remember how much. Next time out I will see what my rpm is at that speed. Thanks! If I'm careful on the twist on a long ride I can get 42mpg. I'm hoping by dropping under 3000rpm I can get better than that. Just got back from a ride. At ...

Re: Newbie Questions

Even though you probably won't need it you might want to check into buying the factory 4 year extended warranty. You have to buy it before the 3 year warranty runs out. You can purchase it from any dealer and it can be had for $450 - $500. With that milage you are basically getting a new bike. Keep ...

The lugs on the back wheel are 80. There are several items that have to be torqued on the front: The front axle pin is 43 the pinch bolts are 16 and the brake caliper is 23 (right caliper has to be removed to get the wheel off).
