Re: 1980 cylinder head bolt removal sequence?

Be careful you also undo the very small bolt at the bottom of the cylinder heads between the exhaust ports. This is often forgotten and can cause a lot of stress trying to get the heads off!!!! Better download the manaul from this site as you will need it when you put then thing together

Re: Compression test....

Did you try all cylinders "wet"? Why did you decide to test the compression in the first place, was there a problem? If there is no appreciable smoke I would just carefully cap the valve adjustments and leave it alone as these engines are very tough. Did you test the compression with the throttle wi...

Black plastic bits???? Strange one that, I have seen bits of the black clutch friction linings inn the gauze filter before now and its not uncommon. I have also changed the clutch plates with the engine in situ, bit fiddly but can be done. Let us know what you find

Re: head gasket??

The cylinder head valve oil seals can be changed without removing the cylinder head. There is a thread on this website telling you how to do it. I have done it several times and the only cash outlay was fro BOTH seals and the special valve spring compressor. Much cheaper than a strip down

Re: found a nice 87 gl1200 with low compression

These engines can give misleading symptoms! I have had good compression of 170 psi on all cylinders and new valves/seals/guides and the thing still smoked!!! If the oil control rings are out of tolerance the bike will smoke whilst the compression and scraper ring are in good condition thus giving go...

Re: neutral switch won't shut off

Its a dirty neutral switch . They get contaminated by carbon in the oil and partially short out when. The light goes bright green when in neutral and glows dimly when in a gear. Loosen the bottom engine bolt and REMOVE the small fore to aft engine bolt which is close to your right foot or you will s...

Re: What I did to solve the bad neutral switch common proble

Come on do it properly! This is a very common problem with these engines and is generally caused by carbon build up from contaminated oil in the sump causing it to malfunction. Replace the switch and at the same time check to oil pump gauze filter which is in the same area. The frame is easy to spri...

Re: Clutch slipping in 3rd, 4th & 5th gear

The cable adjuster is only for taking up the slack in the cable, Make sure you have adjusted the clutch properly via the inspection hole in the rear of the clutch housing FIRST then adjust the clutch cable. have you looked in the gauze oil strainer in the bottom of the sump as any worn bits of the c...

Re: GL1100 Timing Belt Issue

Follow the procedure as per the manual and what ever you do make sure the valves and the pistons do not collide. I always follow the manual carefully and with the sparking plugs out turn the engine over by HAND using a spanner to ensure nothing is touching. If the valves and the piston collide they ...

Head gasket needs replacing. Use an EOM gasket not a cheap alternative and ensure the head bolts are torqued down properly.

Do them. It can be done without removing the cylinder head thus saving gasket costs by using a special valve spring compressor available on Ebay.
There is a thread on this website on how to do it and its a simple procedure.

Re: 1980 GL1100 valve contacted piston

Turning over with just the starter motor will cause valve stem damage if the valve hits the piston. However it sound like you have been gentle with the wrench so give it a go and try it out. If a valve is not seating this will show in a compression test assuming the rings and bores are OK.

I seem to remember that they are not the same even though they look similar. The diameter of the half circular seals front and rear are different ? If you look at the rubber gasket you can see the different diameters?

Re: 82 GL1100A neutral switch

My 82 has the Neutral switch in the bottom right of the engine sump and the frame has to be sprung to remove it. Your machine seems to have the switch under the front bottom casing so I wonder if its a late 82 model onwards? Generally these switches gets gunked up with the residual carbon deposits f...
