Re: Starting issues - no clicking, whirring, nothing :-(

By the way..If you want to confirm the diode is the problem, short the 2 contacts..When the neutral lamp is on,it should crank up.Leaving it shorted will cause the neutral lamp to light every time the clutch lever is pulled in.

Ok..replace the diode...It's attached to the harness by your left knee.Or close..It's open.that is if the neutral lamp does work

Re: 85 LTD Electrical - need guru

Using a light instead of a fuse is ideal. It can't burn wiring. All the energy is dissapate in the light and it's easy to tell when the short is removed...the light simply goes out.

Re: 85 LTD Electrical - need guru

Can you tell what you have tried so far? A quick look shows that the 7.5 amp fuse feeds the instrument cluster, trip computer and trunk light. Because it just blows by itself,I am guessing that it is the memory backup circuit. I will suggest stop blowing fuses..that's not finding the problem..Take a ...

Re: Stuck brush in the starter again.Idea needed

Yup.been there in my past.I've resurrected my fair share of electric rotating devices in a multitude of styles.Everywhere from tiny servo motors to the center pivot irrigation systems. I am keenly aware of the need for quality parts. I do use the proper chemicals and methods to restore parts to OEM ...

Re: Stuck brush in the starter again.Idea needed

Yes.Before final assembly I will verify that everything is decontaminated, dry, moisture free and clean.I don't want any oil residue anywhere around the brushes.
I don't intend baking the bearings but I will inspect and replace if necessary.
I'm trying to make this a "once and done"repair.

Re: Stuck brush in the starter again.Idea needed

I don't have a problem using a corrosion inhibitor coating...However...There's just one drawback.. One brush stuck in it's holder... If I clean it and coat with this stuff I'm concerned that normal brush movement will simply remove the coating and expose the metal to moisture again the rust..seizing...

I like the Coke idea too and keeping it sealed is important.Mine was sealed ok..it got water in it from the engine side. The bike was submersed under 6 feet of water for 2 days.

Re: Stuck brush in the starter again.Idea needed

Everything in the starter (in my mind) should tolerate the heat.It is bolted directly to the engine and it does run at 195°.
I don't think the rice will be edible tho.
That's not how they make "dirty rice" here in Louisiana.
At least I hope not.

Re: Stuck brush in the starter again.Idea needed

I kinda have a plan. Chemically remove all rust(muratic acid). Detox everything including the brushes(the protective sleeve) Put all parts in a pan with rice covering everything. Bake for 1 hour at 200°...or untill done. :D Cool and spray PB blaster(rust inhibitor) on the brush holder..(after removi...

Re: Stuck brush in the starter again.Idea needed

Just found this...3123-MT8-008 brush plate for 1988 at Southern Honda Powersports Chattanooga Tn. 423-486-9089. Maybe.... I just went there and did a lookup. The # you list should be for the 1990 models and up. The 1988 model shows the brush holder but no part number. The starters are different but ...

Re: Stuck brush in the starter again.Idea needed

Differences in starters? The 88-89 has 2 electrical connector posts.both positive and negative connections. The 90 and up have just the one post and use the case for grounding. The reverse circuit is different in the 88-89. I plan on baking the starter electrical / less the mechanical parts...Any su...

Re: Stuck brush in the starter again.Idea needed

The starter is sealed.no water or moisture at all.It appears dry but i may "bake" it just to be positive. There may be hidden moisture in the windings.

My flood restored gl1500 has a recurring problem. One month after completion, the starter quit..Stuck brushes..I cleaned the area very good(so I thought) and it operated 3 more months...Quit again...So I removed the brush holder and dipped in muratic acid...cleaned meticulously and coated with ATF...W...

Does that "reverse solenoid "click when you push the start button?
Both solenoids should click when cranking the engine.

Re: Back to a two Bike Family - Sold the 1800

Even tho I now have just the 1500...somedays I think hard about getting another "older" bike. It's all about style..The older wings..You could see the massive engine and framework that made it a bike... The 1500 seemed to cover up all the impressive stuff with plastic... My first impression when I s...

They can be set close but carbs should always be synced to the engine as the final step along with the idle down adjustments. Bench sync is just adjusting the carb linkage so each throttle valve opens at the same time and amount. This can be seen with a light in the plenum box.I do suggest using a sh...
