This Gold Fuel Filter almost fits in the standard GL1200 fuel filter bracket, and is much cheaper than Honda OEM :

Re: What is a Stator?

A stator is an older form of alternator charging device that has no parts to wear .. no brushes . Its simply a magnet , spinning inside a coil . It can produce up to 70 VAC , so needs a rectifier ( into DC ) and a regulator ( Bring it down to about 13 volts .) It has been used in outboards, plane en...

Re: 1200 SEI wiring diagram

The problem with a 30 yo machine is thats a lot of time for PO's to add stuff or modify wires . Even a good wiring diagram from the Clymer might not help Quire often you have to actually trace wires by running a fingertip along the entire wire from stop light up to the switch . When I got mine , the...

Re: Radiator cap for 86 gl1220a

Last year, I took mine down to a local rad shop, to see which of many he would recommend . The nice man in the rad shop looked at it , said " Its pretty dirty " , sprayed it with something magical , wiped all the dirt and grit off the rubber seal, slapped it onto a rad cap tester , cranked the press...

Re: Rear brake issue - '85 LTD

The top 1/8 to 1/4 in of the pistons does nothing critical . ... the small clear ring spot just above the corrosion line . You don't want to actually gouge it ... but I have found that if Hydraulic fluid pressure does not push them out .. I take a break... to think ... Then clean that top 1/4 inch ,...

Now that your pins are out, borrow a digital micrometer

.... and check them over their entire length to be less than 6.00 mmm... say down to 5.95 mm or less after sanding in a drill press

( Top to bottom !! )

GL1200 oil and stator ... When to change.

For at least 15 years, I have kept my 1200 stator running well ( It probably was a PO replacement ) My research way back then was that GL1200 stator failure was ( Likely ) caused by : a) Bad yellow wire plug ( which I cut out and soldered ). b) Poor battery and rect/reg struggling to keep up ( check...

Yes, it is a GREAT Bike ! .. and so fun to do the BIG miles in ( My best was Alaska !! ) ... and I feel the same way about keeping stator , etc as original as possible !! ( I also have classic plates) but .. it will never be easy stuff from now on , 'cept for oil changes . You will find all sorts of...

Re: Rear brake issue - '85 LTD

Those pins are very soft metal, and do mushroom quite easily . The first time I found this, about 11 years ago, I had just purchased a digital caliber. The hole they go into is 6.00 mm. My pins were from 6.05 to 6.13 over quite a length . No wonder they were stuck I used an old phillips screwdriver,...

Re: What kind of Air Guage do you use?

Usually I want to do more than just check. At a service station, I also want to add air, and possibly remove a pound or two , if I go over .... I bought this from GWRRA about 15 years ago: TirePressureGauge_withPouch.jpg It is quite accurate, clips onto the tire valve ( I only have two hands !! ) an...

Re: rear brake rotor replacing

Getting it off... and back on too is a " ballet " with a lot of small steps . I use a small table lift , safety ties so it will not fall over, several bungee cords to tie stuff up , a long lever 2x4 and a 6x6 block as a lever base , and a scissors jack to fine tune where you want the swing arm . You...

Re: 85 LE starter clutch

In a 30 year old machine, even one with low miles, when you remove the starter ( which is a pain , clearance wise ) you will surely find all sorts of yucky grunge , a mix of carbon ( brushes ) and grease. Ugh .. Cleaning and possibly new starter bearings can make quite a difference...... SilverDave

I did a little more research ... many of the recent , very modern LED bulbs have almost a point source , unlike the ones of just 3 years ago. A " Point source " bulb of any type will be focused by even 1980 fluted lenses Drive Safe !! SilverDave
