Re: Oil filter confusion

I have been riding GL1100's since 1981 and have always used the Fram CH6009 filter with out any issues. So I may have not used them for a million, trillion years but I'd say 37 years is a pretty long time :)

Re: engine won't turn over.. 83 1100gl

i'm thinking that you may have a "hydro lock" condition. if you have a float needle in a carb fail / stick open that would explain the "chugging" you experienced. and after sitting not running more fuel could have passed causing the hydro lock. quick test would be to pull the spark plugs and see if ...

Re: What's this hole

the same casting is used for both left and right side. it is only how it is assembled with the cams and other bits that make it right or left. the threaded boss that you are referring to is for the outboard hold down bolt on the timing belt covers. it is less expensive to manufacture a head that wil...

Re: OK - re my GL1100 - but greater knowledge needed.

if one was to intentionally eliminate the idle air cut off diaphragms the passage from the manifold side of the carb throat would be also be intentionally blocked. if it wasn't (or in the case of a damaged / defective diaphragm) the manifold vacuum would draw in air from the idle air jets causing an...

Re: OK - re my GL1100 - but greater knowledge needed.

OK....... "There are no diaphragms in the 1100 carbs." ............. That is incorrect. There are four Idle Air Cut Off diaphragms (one for each carb). When the diaphragms fail it will expose the idle circuit to direct manifold vacuum.

Re: Timing

OK...... You stated that "This is how I found the timing with the old belt still in place." but in the picture I do not see a belt installed. What I see in the picture is typical of the pulley / cam rotating (due to valve spring force) when the belt is removed. There are several how to's with variou...

I think what you are referring to is a gauge set from a 78 to 79 GL1000 Tank pod. Here is a picture from Ebay and the link.

Re: Slow Jet and Main jet pictures

the slow jet is a fuel jet and emulsion tube all in one. the main jet and needle jet holder combo are the same function. so to answer your question there is nothing else to remove after the idle jet is out.

Re: Slow Jet and Main jet pictures

OK................ There is some confusion here on my part that you could perhaps clear up. The idle (or slow) jet is either a press in or screw in type. The main jet (ref attached view taken from the factory manual) threads into the Needle Jet Holder (I called it an emulsion tube). The Needle Jet H...

Re: Slow Jet and Main jet pictures

the main jets screw into the emulsion tubes and are centered with respect to the slide. the slide needle extends into the emulsion tube when the slide is down. the idle jets were pressed in on early 1100's and screw in on later 82's and 83's. which by the way it looks like you have an 83 so you shou...

there is nothing weird about it. that is what will happen if the bike is not properly supported to take the weight off of the front wheel. when working on the front end i use a jack under the front of the engine (with a wood block of course) to lift the wheel off of the ground. i also use a tie down...

Re: Pressurized fuel tank

hi imadamine, the gas cap is designed to maintain pressure in the tank from 2inhg vacuum to 2 psi pressure. so the pressure relief you hear when opening the cap is normal. 2psi is normal pump pressure so it wont be pressurizing the carbs any more than the pump. and the negative pressure relief valve...

Hi Mttaz, After seeing so many people drilling holes in the gas cap out of “a lack of understanding” (there is another word but I am keeping this PC) of how the cap is designed I made a posting a while back showing the caps design. http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=30077&p=173534&hi...

Re: Air cut off valves

all GL1100 use the same air cut off valve. one per carb. i only say that as many vendors advertise a quantity of one as a set when in fact you need 4 for a complete carb rack rebuild.
