Re: Timing

OK...... You stated that "This is how I found the timing with the old belt still in place." but in the picture I do not see a belt installed. What I see in the picture is typical of the pulley / cam rotating (due to valve spring force) when the belt is removed. There are several how to's with variou...

Re: LED Gauge Cluster

I too would like to clean the glass over the fuel / temp gauges. When changing the bulbs (i used the same as what came out from AutoZone) I got to the same point you were in the picture and time did not allow to investigate further. Did you, or anyone else, ever get it disassembled enough to clean t...

Re: Gauge cluster on tank

I think what you are referring to is a gauge set from a 78 to 79 GL1000 Tank pod. Here is a picture from Ebay and the link.

Re: Slow Jet and Main jet pictures

the slow jet is a fuel jet and emulsion tube all in one. the main jet and needle jet holder combo are the same function. so to answer your question there is nothing else to remove after the idle jet is out.

Re: Slow Jet and Main jet pictures

OK................ There is some confusion here on my part that you could perhaps clear up. The idle (or slow) jet is either a press in or screw in type. The main jet (ref attached view taken from the factory manual) threads into the Needle Jet Holder (I called it an emulsion tube). The Needle Jet H...

Re: Slow Jet and Main jet pictures

the main jets screw into the emulsion tubes and are centered with respect to the slide. the slide needle extends into the emulsion tube when the slide is down. the idle jets were pressed in on early 1100's and screw in on later 82's and 83's. which by the way it looks like you have an 83 so you shou...

Re: Weird Fork Oil Change Accident

there is nothing weird about it. that is what will happen if the bike is not properly supported to take the weight off of the front wheel. when working on the front end i use a jack under the front of the engine (with a wood block of course) to lift the wheel off of the ground. i also use a tie down...

Re: Pressurized fuel tank

hi imadamine, the gas cap is designed to maintain pressure in the tank from 2inhg vacuum to 2 psi pressure. so the pressure relief you hear when opening the cap is normal. 2psi is normal pump pressure so it wont be pressurizing the carbs any more than the pump. and the negative pressure relief valve...

Re: 83 GL1100I gas cap

Hi Mttaz, After seeing so many people drilling holes in the gas cap out of “a lack of understanding” (there is another word but I am keeping this PC) of how the cap is designed I made a posting a while back showing the caps design. http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=30077&p=173534&hi...

Re: Air cut off valves

all GL1100 use the same air cut off valve. one per carb. i only say that as many vendors advertise a quantity of one as a set when in fact you need 4 for a complete carb rack rebuild.

Re: carb pilot screws missing?

the head of the pilot screw is broken off. the best way to successfully drill out a broken pilot screw is to have the individual carb centered up in a mill with respect to the broken screw and drill it out stepping out to the tap drill size. Good luck as most carbs with this condition are not salvag...

OK............ I have read about more wings with engine damage from changing belts incorrectly than from having them break on their own. That said this is not your first bike... so when you see it and look it over hear it run and ride it (if the owner lets you) before you buy it you will know if it ...

Re: 82 GL1100 loose bits on steering head.

what you are pointing to is the dust shield that is a stamped sheet metal detail that is attached (pressed / swaged) onto the adjusting nut assembly. there is an article on re greasing the stem bearings on a 1500 here http://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12367 . that describes what you will...

Re: Sputtering engine

OK............ what you are describing is a total electrical failure that is only occurring for very short time intervals. the first place i would look is the "dog bone" / main fuse by the starter solenoid. it could be corroded and cracking. you could jump it with a test lead to see if that corrects...
