Re: I am concerned.... lots of smoke!!

I picked an '83 up recently in long-term storage and unknown condition last month. It smoked like a volcano once it warmed up. When I had initially drained the oil before starting, the crankcase was full of gas. As I did some digging, I discovered that as the gas filled the crankcase (stuck carb fl...

Re: I am concerned.... lots of smoke!!

By reading your post you mentioned it is you bike that set up for a few years,Correct? Did it smoke like that before the retirement? If not,it can also be just stuck oil rings,Usually valve seal will burn oil out the tailpipe when decelerating(high port vacuum)and not so much when running. If it st...

I just got my 1981 gl1100 running after a rest of at least 2 years. When it first starts there is no smoke coming from the exhaust pipes......... as it warms up it begins to really smoke out of both pipes.(blueish color, smells like oil) how do I tell if it is the rings?? can I loosen them if they a...

Re: it runs!!..... but doesn't idle well

stanco, i also have a single carb on mine. Do you have your vacuum advance hooked up to your new carb? This can greatly effect the idle as i found out. Also make sure to play with your mixture screw and get that just right cause even if its off by a millimeter it will act funny. yes, I did hook up ...

it runs!!..... but doesn't idle well

8481.1 I have converted my GL1100 to a single carb unit using a solex carb off a VW. Now, when I bought the bike it was not running at all, so I never heard it run. well, it started third try and sounds pretty good, but it doesn't idle very well. Anyone here know where I should start to adjust for t...

Re: leaks only when on sidestand

Can you tell where it is leaking from? I'm still not sure but it pools on the motor overnight. I bought new o-rings and gaskets for the water tubes, they are not here yet but we'll see when they arrive if that is the problem I received the gaskets and o-rings. do I use sealer on the gaskets? (RTV, ...

Re: Carburator conversion

I have a 1978 GL1000 engine. Has anyone ever fabricated a manifold to run this engine using a Honda automobile carburator? Funny you should ask. I am in the middle of a carb conversion on my '81 GL1100I. I made the manifold and it bolted up last night. I am using a solex carb off a VW. there are a ...

Carbs just won't come out!!!!

I have to remove the carbs for cleaning from my 1981 Interstate.

I have them all disconnected and the false tank off.... the just won't come out. Left side or right side they hit the frame. Does the tank have to come out to get the carbs out?? any tricks for doing this?

thanks in advance

Re: positive battery cable

I suppose you could take a big thick wire and connect the battery positive post directly to the stud on the starter. That would be a method of ruling out everything else in between, I suppose. I would just use a car jump cable to try that!! You could connect it to the positive battery terminal and ...

Re: positive battery cable

I checked out the ground at the frame... sanded everything until it shined as was suggested. still no go on the starter

so, it has to be a bad starter..... I'll pull it out later this week.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, it did help me to troubleshoot

Re: positive battery cable

I was just thinking.... I took the negative cable out from the frame a while ago, cleaned it and reinstalled it. What I did not do was sand the frame clean.... it is quite possible I just put a clean cable back in a dirty space. I'll check it out tonight
