Re: Fresh carb rebuild and Engine Knocking

Where is the bolt you tighten up to stop the knocking located? Sorry for the long delay in replying......I did not see the post. I am not sure what your question is here. The knocking was caused by the left bank running way too rich. I do not recall one specific bolt that I tightened to stop the kn...

Re: How to rebuild your front brake calipers

Johnny grey.......Did you watch the 3 videos I posted by brakecrafters? You should not have had a big problem getting the pistons back in past the new seals. Did you apply a bit of the red grease to the new seals, and thoroughly clean the chrome pistons? I also apply a bit of light oil on the piston...

Re: High RPM miss during acceleration

Johnny Smoke......"good things come to those who wait", as my mom used to say. Then my dad would snap right back, "Weight broke the wagon down!" Ha ha.... Im sure the problem will be fixed soon, but the bike may be up in the bitter freezing temps of the upper mid west. I too am curious as to the pro...

Re: 1985 GL1200 LE.....To Buy or Not To Buy

Rednax......I agree with you about the maintenance. The old book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" was required reading way back when, and maybe partly as a result, I enjoy the chanllenge of working on my bikes, tearing into them, finding the problem, and figuring the best way to fix it. N...

Re: High RPM miss during acceleration

echinus.....OK, I follow you now.....that makes sense. Have the bike on the centerstand so it is level when you do it. Or if you have the carbs out and on a bench you could do it there, or like I did.....just attach about 4 feet of gas line to the carbs and secure it above the carbs, then use a litt...

Re: High RPM miss during acceleration

echinus......Well, that narrows it down some.....the side that is smoking (right side) is the side that is running super rich, probably from a float not shutting off the gas supply. Might be able to look at the two plugs on that side and figure out which one is running rich/wet. But then, I guess yo...

Re: High RPM miss during acceleration

echinus......I just read your last post. I tend to agree with you that it is logical to conclude that it is the carbs which you put on, since the carbs from your other Wing worked great on it. If the float is sticking, then you might see gas pooling up down in the air intake basket.....have the air ...

PanelRed......Thanks man. Sounds like the poor mans alt. might just be the way to go, and I would not have to have the eye candy just hanging up by strings from the cieling.

Re: 1985 GL1200 LE.....To Buy or Not To Buy

Rusty Bike......You make a strong case for the 85 being hung up on wires from my garage ceiling and just being "eye candy" for the man-cave. Even with the potential issues, its a hard bike not to buy.

Rednax60.....Sorry for the late reply here....I did not get an email notice that anyone replied. Thanks for more input regarding making the mod for the Poor Man's alt. Good to hear it can be done w/o tearing up the appearance of the bike. Im still considering buying the bike, but realize that it inv...

Re: 1985 GL1200 LE.....To Buy or Not To Buy

RedNax60.....Thanks for the quick reply and your insight into the 85 LE (I guess I called it the LE, but I guess the proper name is the LTD). I will have to follow your suggestion and read up on how to test the bike to be sure if it is a failing stator. I really do not want to remove the engine to d...

1985 GL1200 LE.....To Buy or Not To Buy

Hello. I own a couple 1983 GL1100 Interstates, and now ran into a real nice looking 85 GL1200 LE for sale. This is the gold/brown Limited Edition with fuel injection and all the other gigdgets and gadgets. It has been garaged-kept most of its life, but after speaking to the owner, I found that it is...

Re: 1100 I Speedo smokes.

Speedo Update: Took the 83 Naked Wing out today, and the speedo was quiet and working properly. So, apparently just using spray lube and then the white lithium grease solved the problem. Will keep the black Quack Tape on it for awhile to make sure it is definately good before I put the steel crimped...

Re: 1100 I Speedo smokes.

Jim......Great info. I love the quality of joker machine's speedo clamp rings. They have screws all the way around to make a super secure hold, and can easily be taken apart in the future. But a bit pricey. Also good to know Marcel has the replacement rings that slide over the speedo and tach, and t...

Re: 1100 I Speedo smokes.

Maz....I agree with going your route if you have the patience to bend that rascall all the way around. Wish someone would make these rings with the "L" crimp only on one side....then we could just slide the new one on, and recrimp it. Im just hoping that I dont make the Quack Tape a permanent featur...

Re: Brake Caliper Question

str8.....there was a nice 82 Aspy rotor on Ebay a couple weeks ago.....for only $25 which included shipping. Here is a pic of how far the caliper pistons will go before dropping out: I had to use various thickness things laying around to get both pistons to come out at the same time, so one did not ...

Re: Fan won't turn off

str8......Toggle switch for Fan: I just used an el cheapo on/off dial switch that I had laying around (might have been for some old hand router). I pulled the connection apart that runs to the heat sensor, and crimped wires with the right slide-on clip, and plugged in at this connection. Yesterday I...

Re: 1100 I Speedo smokes.

Maz....Yes, I watched videos/articles of people doing it both ways. The prying can take along time and be a little frustrating, so I went with the cut option. They just use a large hose clamp to hold it back tight, and then apply JBWeld to the cut area. Also, I was thinking about putting a small ben...

Re: 1100 I Speedo smokes.

Speedo Repairs: Today I cut the small band holding the two speedo halves together and opened her up: STA77078.JPG It actually cut real easily, and then popped apart: STA77082.JPG The dial for the Trip Meter was a bit larger than the hole, so I just left the top half in place as I lubed all the gears...

Re: Brake Caliper Question

str8......I was looking for a rear rotor for my 83 Interestate, and found a great one for an 82 Aspy. But I was told it would not work since it is 9mm thick vs the 6mm for the Interstate. So, I did not order it. However, I am scratching my head and wondering why a thicker rotor would not work, since...

Re: Fan won't turn off

str8edge.......Yep, the fan motor keeps running on one of my 83 GL1100s. I did not want to deal with replacing the switch at this time, so I just wired a switch into the connection plug, and this way I can switch it on when I need to. Being the temps are now cooler here, I can get by until a hot day...

Re: Need your opinions

Another thing to check is to make sure that the stator bolt is tight. Unscrew the stator cap, and then you can stick your finger in and feel the bolt. My engine was making a terrible knocking sound and I thought the engine was a gonner. Then I found that this stator bolt was loose......and just tigh...

Re: carburetor rebuild

bigb......Sorry to hear the bad news on the Idle screws. Im thinking that maybe you should bite the bullet and buy another set of carbs off Ebay......they often sell them from running bikes, and may not require alot of work.
