Headlight and Brake lights.
Went to a party, 50 miles away, last night on the bike. I went to leave and no headlight or brake lights. Thank goodness I had bright running lights. I managed to only have to stop 1 time to get home at midnight. Looked this morning and the fuse for the headlight was blown and in pieces. The brake l...

Re: What should I watch out for?
I would not ride on tires 8 yrs old even if they were bought off the shelf.
8yr old tires with a bike sitting on them would be worse.
Just depends on how much your life is worth.

Post a thread after you have ridden the refurbished shocks a short piece. Let others know if it is worth it. Post where you got your parts.
I still have not completed mine. Today was the day but I got called to help move a friend's daughter from an apt to her new to her new house.

Re: Problem "Rear Shock Bump Stops" 83 gl1100
Yes that nut comes off. I spent 20 minutes yesterday getting mine off. I held the rod with a vice grip and screwed the nut off. I did scour the rod but it should not be a problem as it is on the top and goes no-where, The bump I drilled out a little to make it go on easier. Yes they do get spongy/di...

Re: Cooling system question
Yes you can change the valve cvrs w/out taking off the timing belts. But do change the belts if you have no idea of their age. They may look good but if they break then you are truly out of luck. On the back side of the covers write the milage and date when you do change the belts. You will not ride...

Since you have the part number put the # in google.
The radiator hose--go to napa and get 7733. You can cut this hose to make both the upper and lower hose.

Re: 1980 Interstate speedometer removal
You would have to look at the Aspencade manual and figure out what parts would be needed to go digital. Then you would have to figure out how to do it.
Go to the top of this page and look at how to articles and manuals.

Re: 1980 Interstate speedometer removal
All you need to do is remove the 2 nuts on the back and disconnect the cable. Unplug the electrical wires or pop the light bulb out of the back.
There is nothing to rebuild in there.
Digital is doable but you need several more parts.

Re: Fuel Tank
The fuel line attaches to the bottom of the petcock. The petcock attaches to the right lower side of the tank by 2 screw, pan, 6 x 12.
The top of the tank you will have a gasket, base (P.# 37801-689-000)
The fuel sending unit and retainer (P. # 37802-371-000)

Use the old gaskets. If they leak they are not hard to replace. If you do replace use only oem.

Re: GL1100 engine removal & missing bolts
It does not matter when you drain it. Probably best to drain it after the engine is out. You will have engine oil left in the motor either way you do it. When you get the engine out you, will find the oil in the screen at the bottom of the engine which needs to be cleaned. Haynes does not tell you a...

Re: GL1100 engine removal & missing bolts
The missing screw part # is 93500-05008-oA screw, pan 5x8
........................... # is 90452-323-000 washer, thrust, 5mm
It is easier to leave the carbs in the bike (hang the carbs to the top of the frame) to remove the engine.

Let it sit till the weather warms up.
Do not go out and start it for 5 mins just to hear it purr or try to purr. That will cause more problems.

Re: 82 1100 Aspencade won't start - too much oil?
I would not get another filter. Open the drain plug and let the oil drip slowly out until the correct level is in the sight glass. How cold is it? My bike will not start after it gets so cold. No heated garage. Next spring add some sea foam to the oil and run it 200 miles and change the oil while th...
