Re: GL1000 Heads Differences

Makes sense to me since the exhaust gaskets are the same for all 4 cylinder years.

Re: GL1000 Heads Differences

You are correct on the cam cov rate and hotter cams. Better carbs on the early years also as the GL1000 began as a sports bike and later a touring bike. I know little of the difference if any for the heads.

Re: Rear Luggage Rack

That one looks like a vintage rack an looks like it would inable to keep the blinkers. I have now adopted a great set of Hondaline Saddlebags so I moved to a 1978 fender, and taillight blinker setup.

89K miles is not bad on the rings, many users have gotten them to go over 200K.

Re: Early Production 75

I would get it running well before considering restoration to 75 status. In the states, the 75 goes for more than later years but not by more than $500 most of the time. Of course buying for $50 means the same condition for a 1977 would be -$450 LOL. Plenty of parts available to get her running.

Re: 76 cylinder head on 78 engine

I have 1977 carbs, heads and cams on my 1978 block and you cannot tell the difference from a 1977 with the exception of being a bit quieter block. I of course had to modify my 77 carbs to work like 1976 carbs.

Re: Tensioner pulley change

Not a common failure, they seem to be a pretty stout design. But on an interference engine, some caution is a good idea. Usually that just means a belt change.

Re: idle issues

Mike Nixon wrote a booklet on rebuilding these carbs and Randell Washington (Randakk) produced an excellent video. Using those tools and a Randakk carb kit, my first carb rebuild went perfect and the carbs on that bike remain working perfectly today.

Re: slides

When the carbs are off, you can tip the rack and gravity is enough for them to drop if they are properly free. Your method is interesting and sounds like it worked.

Randakk is not the cheapest but it is the one that puts the bike on the road fast. Lots of comparison completed and Randakks is the only one good for today's fuel.

Sounds like the sliders are not slippery enough. They need to move really easy with no friction.

Re: Oil in water

Water pump is often the source. Since it is mechanical it needs engine oil, and since it pumps coolant it has sealing to separate them. But the shaft seal has been known to desegregate them.

Re: !200 engine swap

I have not done it, but others have. There is a tach drive issue and something on the rear is too long for the frame so that part of the engine needs a swap. Also the gear ratios in the transmission are different so you need to watch the final drive too. It works out well but takes much more effort....

Re: GL 1000 carb conversion

The only thing bad about the stock carbs is that that do not store well full of fuel for two or more years. Honda thought we were going to ride every season. You are right that once they are cleaned out and rebuild with solid Randakk kits and video or Mike Nixon's book then every consecutive season ...

The fuel pump is a solid clue. I would go with that since I have not heard they are identical. So since I too am not sure, go with the clue.

I would try the ram Air instead of a fan. You cannot pull much heat anyway. A ram air opening can be small for the first try.

Nothing wrong with a small Muffin fan at 1 amp as long as your charging system is up for it.

Dyna Tec makes excellent Coils. Here is a link

Way better to have new than 40 year old Coils.

Re: Replacing 76 GL1000 coils with 77 GL1000 coils

Not sure it is a good idea to replace a failed 41 year old coil with a good 40 year old coil. Dyna makes some very nice coils that will last a lot longer and not develop a crack before the next rain shower when you are caught out riding. Electronics weak links are age and heat.

Re: 1978 Gl1000 Severe Loss of Power and Throttle Response in Gear

Electric sounds most probable based on the event appearance. A short stop will heat the Coils. Sure seems likely. The other is fuel flow past the filter. Could be the tank was not kept full and flakes of rust dropped in. If the filter gets intermediate then fuel may flow and be insufficient to keep ...
