Re: Differences left/right cylinder heads?

The fuel pump is a solid clue. I would go with that since I have not heard they are identical. So since I too am not sure, go with the clue.

Can you post the contact info. My LTD rear can be rejuvenated perhaps. Never before have I seen a craftsman that had the right process for the gold wheels.

Most likely not to do with a head gasket. The post above is the most likely scenario.

Re: Sidecar heater

I would try the ram Air instead of a fan. You cannot pull much heat anyway. A ram air opening can be small for the first try.

Nothing wrong with a small Muffin fan at 1 amp as long as your charging system is up for it.

Dyna Tec makes excellent Coils. Here is a link
http://www.dynaonline.com/products/acce ... coils.aspx

Way better to have new than 40 year old Coils.

Re: Replacing 76 GL1000 coils with 77 GL1000 coils

Not sure it is a good idea to replace a failed 41 year old coil with a good 40 year old coil. Dyna makes some very nice coils that will last a lot longer and not develop a crack before the next rain shower when you are caught out riding. Electronics weak links are age and heat.

Re: 1978 Gl1000 Severe Loss of Power and Throttle Response in Gear

Electric sounds most probable based on the event appearance. A short stop will heat the Coils. Sure seems likely. The other is fuel flow past the filter. Could be the tank was not kept full and flakes of rust dropped in. If the filter gets intermediate then fuel may flow and be insufficient to keep ...

Re: Cleaning carb, float needle circuit

I would have to pull out either the a Randakks video or Mike Dixons book to be sure, but seems to me the carbs should be the same for each side. The piano wire seems like the right tool.

Re: 1977 gl1000 fuel trouble

Not a water in the fuel issue then. The 1977 had an emission regulation issue and the off idle circuit is too lean. Two fixes are required. One is to solder closed the idle air jet then drill it out with a number 62. The other is to put tiny washers on the idle pin. There is a nice link over at NGW ...

Re: Clutch metal plates, black marks

Might be an issue with the engine oil that was once used. Since they do not clean with steel wool I suggest they remain usable. But as I have not noticed that before my expertise is limited.

Re: No running rear light; but brake light works; All works with key in ACC position.

the Key witch gets old and sometimes looses contact. You can take it appart and clean them, or Emco makes a replacement. My bet is that is the issue. It really have too much current running through it. Several of us use an ignition relay to avoid high current through that switch.

Re: 1977 gl1000 fuel trouble

perhaps the fuel pump is weak, since it is fine at idle, the pump works but perhaps cannot keep the bowls filled when you throttle up. You can always blame the carbs. This is also a symptom you get with water in the fuel. Idle can burn the water okay but as soon as you need to make power, then she d...

Re: 79 GL 1000

The headlight bucket has more room than you think. I have all the wires in there and also three additional relays and it buttons up fine. The wires from the handle bars go to a rats nest on the left side frame near the triple tee. They should have a rubber sleeve to contain them.

I tape on an old clutch or throttle cable to reinstall. I also use electrical tape to tie the connector bullets close to the wires and keep them from catching. Not a bad job for the third time you do it.

Re: Clutch adjustment - Hard shift

The engine oil is shared with transmission so it does matter. Using a motorcycle specific oil helps. I run Rotella T6 synthetic in the blue bottle. Never hear of anyone damaging a clutch or transmission using my shift method but certainly there is potential and extra gear wear when under full thrott...

Re: Clutch adjustment - Hard shift

I do not use the clutch to up shift. I just load the shifter up a bit, then let off the gas to get an upshift. A bit smoother unless you are in a real hurry. If in a real hurry, it is much faster that way but not smoother. Using this method, I get neutral less often by accident and never get the fal...
