Re: Timing keeps skipping

I have decided to buy two rebuilt heads. They do not have the cams in them though. Are the heads the same on both sides? Is it the cams and the cap on the backside of the one cam and the gear on the backside of the other cam what makes the difference between the right and left head? Will the two dif...

Re: Timing keeps skipping

Wait a sec. 2 "O" rings? When I took it all apart I only saw one in each head. An idea of what size the two "O" rings are? It has always gotten plenty of lubrication though. Even after I changed out the head gaskets.

Re: Timing keeps skipping

I will try to leave the "slack" you mention next time. None of the teeth are messed up, or atleast they weren't after every time I checked after it skipped. It may be messed up now. Since it was only one belt doing the skipping, I may just replace it when I get that far again. Just to be safe, being...

Re: Timing keeps skipping

I tightened the bolts for the tensioner rollers tight enough to hold them in place. Were they supposed to float? I did replace one of the o rings but I did not know that they were o rings when I did the first head gasket. I thought it was some special rubber seal since it was smashed into the hole a...

Re: Timing keeps skipping

Before it went crunch, I noticed that one of the head gaskets was leaking coolant ( it did not do this before). Once I get the time I am going to pull the sparkplugs and hope the crunch was more the sound of the motor locking up and stopping suddenly from possibly sucking some of the coolant into th...

Re: Timing keeps skipping

Yeah. I just don't get it. How it could have possibly skipped. Maybe we all can learn from making the tension too tight. Naturally, I would have to discover this. I hope someone can give us more insight on how this could have happened. Once I get all of this fixed, I sure as heck do not want to have...

Re: Timing keeps skipping

They were tight like a banjo string though. I serioustly could get a note by "strumming" it. Then, I tightened it all down (the rollers). Should I have let the one side of the tensioners (rollers) float? I just do not get it. They were very tight.

Timing keeps skipping

I took my time replacing a head and the gaskets on my GL1100a. I replaced the timing belts as well. I kept noticing that after I ran it a little bit, the timing would be off by one tooth. I would readjust it, it would start right up. After I would leave it, I would come back, a later day, and it wou...

Re: What is an intake manifold vacuum equalizer tube?

I already replaced the head with the one off of the original motor. It feels like the thread for the #1 cylinder spark plug is cross threaded. I pulled out and put back in etc. until i just said "screw it" and went in with it. I hope it was just dirty. It runs way better now. I will get started on t...

What is an intake manifold vacuum equalizer tube?

I just changed my headgaskets out, and it is not running as good as it used to. I read up on the topic more, and in one explanation there is mention of the intake manifold vaccum equalizer tube. What is it? Surely they are not talking about the tube that runs from the top of one head to the top of t...

Re: Engine Ticking

Ok. So, I have finally replaced the head gaskets. I put the timing belts on with T2 up at first, checked to make sure everything would turn, and it surprisingly did just fine. Tried to start it, luckily it cranked, but did not ignite. It pushed fuel so hard backwards that it leaked around the hose f...

Re: Head Bolt Torque

Crap. So the Cams have to come off to get to the middle bolts. Correct? No, I have not invested in the manual yet. So what is the torq and order to tighten the cams down. I wasn't thinking. for some reason I was hoping the four visable bolts would be the ones I would be taking off and tightening. Th...

Head Bolt Torque

I have a 82 1100 and am getting ready to replace my head gaskets. What is the torque and procedure (tighten em evenly etc). I have looked through quite a few of the questions already asked that touch on this subject, but they have different torques, one person said that they had to replace the threa...

Re: Air ride system

I do not know if the wire that normally went to it was bad or not, (I did not remove it) but I just ran another wire and mine works fine now. I was worried about the rear not working since it did not seem to rise like the front did, but I have recently noticed that it does rise, just not as noticeab...

Re: Timing belt information GL1100 Standard

The Gates brand is the same as the NAPA? That is funny considering I read a post that a Gates distributer put up on another site, saying that the NAPA were inferior to the Gates belts. Figures that a salesman would say that. They cost the same in my area anyways.

Re: Engine Ticking

Ok. thank you. I will do that while I am changing my timing belt since I will be rotating my engine anyways. I will check the valve clearance before, so that if I do not have any wear spots, I will know it is not in there at all.

Re: Engine Ticking

Never mind. I found it. I can not hear any ticking at all on that track. My ticking is pretty noticeable. I have already ordered my valve cover gaskets, my final gear cover gasket (the old one is leaking), and my timing belt tool. I am going to order my head gaskets, buy my timing belt, feeler guage...

Re: Timing belt information GL1100 Standard

I have the engine that was on the bike when I got it still, and would love to rebuild it so that I too can have a spare engine. What all does one do to an engine to rebuild it? That would be an awesome tutorial!!! Maybe I will take a camera out to the garage with me when I do this. I would like to g...

Re: Timing belt information GL1100 Standard

Do you have or can you get the part number for the timing belt from NAPA. And could someone do a tutorial on how to change them. Is it like on a car where you line up points? What position does the engine have to be in when you put it on the pulleys? How do i tell what position the engine is in?

Re: Engine Ticking

Are you suggesting that I should check my valve clearance, get them where they should be, once i have them right, it should be safe to ride? If this is so, I will start rebuilding the engine that came on it and change it out once I get it done. I am new to owning and riding a motorcycle, but am scar...
