Re: Electricity 101 Part 5: Soldering Techniques

Thanks for that teach-in! Like most people my knowledge of soldering is pretty basic, going back many (many) years! One thing I have found, is that when soldering fine multi-wired cable that when applying the heat the wire frays out. Is this caused by over heating, or just my bad technique? Heat wi...

Re: Electricity 101 Part 5: Soldering Techniques

Great video, great technique. I have found that letting the newly soldered joint cool before moving it greatly reduces the possibility of mechanical failure, too. Absolutely, I should have mentioned that. Moving a solder joint before it has solidified can cause a cold solder joint, which not only c...

Re: Sticking switches

Hello all, I test, troubleshoot and rework electronics all day and I must warn against using spray cleaners and especially WD40 to clean the switches. Honda has a habit of using open body switches with electrolytic past lubricants for the contacts, if you get the cleaner into the body of the switch ...

Re: Adding an avatar to your profile

You mentioned problems with iPhones and that the android phones can do it with no problem but I was wondering if you found any android notes or tablets that have problems and if you have any advice with pre-pic selections for the best results after uploading?

Re: How to update GPS Navi maps without paying Garmin

The firmware could be part of the problem. When I zoom out everything looks alright but when I zoom in the local streets never appear and the accuracy ring increases to reflect the new scale. When I reload the old maps with the new firmware I get the same result plus the GPS tells me it could not un...

Re: How to update GPS Navi maps without paying Garmin

Disappointing update! Thanks again for all the help. I went for a ride today and found the maps appear locked. all I get are freeways, highways and main roads but all other roadways are missing. I re loaded the old maps and the .UNI file but the new firmware will not unlock the old files, with the o...

Re: How to update GPS Navi maps without paying Garmin

How can I tell if the file is locked/unlocked before use?
I read that the old maps will work with the new firmware, is that correct? What is the difference between the maps used with the non-NT and NT versions.

Re: How to update GPS Navi maps without paying Garmin

A lack of information can cause confusion; If anything can go wrong it will go wrong! When updating the firmware and maps to version 4.60 using the process I found here provided me with 2 files; gmapsupp.img and gupdate.gcd (after renaming). Now my old CF card has 3 files; gmapsupp.img, gupdate.gcd ...
