Re: Fuel Gauge Help

The older wings gas gauges are not the most accurate to begin with. Mine is off by about a gallon. It shows its ready to go to reserve, when I still have 2 gallons or so left. I just keep an eye on the odometer at start looking for a gas station at around 160 miles. I did clean the sending unit and ...

Re: Fuel Gauge Help

The easiest way to dope out fuel gauge problems is to, with the key on, remove the seat and touch the two leads from the float to each other- if the gauge reads full, The gauge is fine. If the tank is actually less than full- then suspect the sending unit. Regards, Johnny

Re: GL1100 head gasket replacement

Pick up a $5.00 mirror at a garage sale. Use a spray tacky glue and glue a piece of 100 grit sandpaper to the mirror. Place head on mirror and sand back and forth and circular, using light pressure. Mirrors are VERY flat, surprising results can be achieved by such a simple process. Regards, Johnny

Re: Timing

Regardless of any other advice from a somewhat dubious poster, Do a carb sync, it can make a world of difference. If it comes down to this, pull the heads and check piston and valves. If valves are bent, refurb the head or buy a couple off e-bay. A bit of a learning curve but not all that hard. I re...

Re: First Goldwing - 1981 GL1100

+1 on the timing belt change, cheap insurance for the motor. In my humble opinion, the naked wings are more desirable, They just look so lean and cool! The gas tank looks awesome. With the bike on the side stand, does it tend to sit straight up? Or does it lean properly? If its fairly straight your ...

Re: Carb rebuild leaking around float bowl gasket

I have had good experience with K&M kits. Its either gaskets or your floats are set wrong. During instillation did you make SURE the floats were 15.5mm from heel to toe? They have to be SPOT ON! "Close enough" will simply not work. If you want the best of kits, Randaks (sp?) is, of course, the one. ...

Go with the Sylvania sealed beam halogen bulb. $18 and it does a d***n good job of it! The LED bulbs are AWESOME! But the Sylvania is quite impressive. Regards, Johnny

Re: Need Help Replacing My Starter.

You may have to remove the shift lever to facilitate starter removal. Mark the lever position before you remove it, makes it a lot easier to install correctly. Excellent how to from this site: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=259

Re: Charging Problems, Please Help Me

Yep- under false tank on the left. Easy to replace- take off bolts, unplug, and plug in replacement and bolt into place.
I would put the voltmeter on it before you reassemble the bike, and see what your readings are when its running.
Good luck! Regards, Johnny

Re: Charging Problems, Please Help Me

Check your connections, especially the infamous " three yellow wires ". Make sure they are good. Then my guess would be the rectifier. When my rectifier went out, a small portion of the back melted, exposing some metal, which grounded out to the frame. Found a used one and all is fine. Good luck. Re...

Yep, soak the cap overnight in white vinegar. Then use plenty of air to clean it out.
Clogged vents can lead to fuel pump failure over time. Also can cause leaking carbs. Regards, Johnny

Re: Accel Coil replacement or stay stock?

Try a set of coils off of a 1996 or so Dodge Neon. They will wire right in and sell for $25 to $30 from a junk yard. I tried it and I aint going back to stock. There is a nice difference on the low end in power. A quick search here will get ya the info. Well worth the effort, and better than stock. ...
