Re: Strong gas smell on shutdown

The following is my theory and my opinions - I owned 2 GL1500s and put 100,000+ miles on them each over time The fuel tank on the 1500 sits over the engine. The engine generates heat - When parked the engine heats up the fuel and causes it to expand and off vent fumes- When the fuel tank is FULL th...

Re: Newby to 1800 CB secrets?

I did this to my 2002 - Bought the OEM CB - It is the best and works well - It is a false economy to go with an after market CB - some work , some do not. The install is pretty easy - just take your time and follow the directions- The CB antenna you buy should be tuned well enough for short transmi...

Re: Tires - Edumacate me

I have used a few brands on my GL1800 with the following results: Bridgestone G702/G704 combination - decent tires- grip in wet and dry- quiet- handling good longevity about 9500 miles rear is done. Avon Cobras - Good tire in wet and dry, handling, a bit noisy but not bad, 12500 and counting right ...

Re: Reusable Oil Filters

...My first thought was ...WHY BOTHER ? Filters are reasonably cheap - using the OEM is the easiest - Some (like me) Buy an oil change at Wal*mart for about $25 which uses Synthetic Oil and a non-OEM filter. I have sent oil samples into Blackstone Labs for analysis after 6000 and 8000 miles of use ...

Re: LED Headlight replacement: all 4 now or just low beams?

I replaced ALL my headlights with the Electrical Connections LEDs - While it wasn't exactly easy to get to the high beams - it was worth it - I just took off the cowl and did ALL my lighting upgrades - I ride in Deer country late into the fall and they are in rut - which makes them really stupid an...

Re: How to replace your GL1500 shifter oil seal

Having done 3 of these on 1500s in my stable and or friends bikes I can tell anyone looking to make this modification... Replace the seal while you are in there - it is cheap and you are nearly into it as you do the shift pivot - It will make those shifts better than new - The bikes I did it too --...

Re: best tire that has long life and best ride

The Michelin disclaimer is usually found in the nearest trash can, as that is all the value it has for knowledgeable motorcycle riders. I know for a fact, that the Michelin Alpin PA3 run flat 195/55 16 is one superior tire on the GL1800. I have one on the ground, and one on the shelf ready to ride ...

Re: best tire that has long life and best ride

For the 1500 there are limited (good) choices. I tried them all on my old '96 before I sold it. I put well over 100K miles on it and chnged tires myself - I NEVER had a delamination of any kind. HEAT build up is the enemy of tires - overloaded causes heat as does under pressure Most Goldwingers do ...

Re: Gl 1800 Seat

My 1800 had 25,000 miles on it when I got it. The stock seat is /was terrible -- 50-75 miles was torture - My 1500's all had a Diamond seat on them - 700 mile days were easy - several times I have done the SS1000 (only registered one time) So I bit the bullet and spent the $1000+ for a CUSTOM DIAMO...

Re: 95 rear wheel Cush drive. How much movement?

When I did mine on my Old '96 it had about 125,000 miles on it.
It made some difference I think and I was glad I did it...
Then I sold the bike and someone else enjoyed the results of the change over.

Re: SHINKO TIRES

My buddy ran a set of Shinkos.
After 5500 miles and several slippery moments he changed them out..
I have never seen him happier.

Other choices -
Dunlop E4's
Avon Cobra
Bridgestone for the GL1800

All better tires proven by many riders over many miles.

I am sure Mike o pegs are going to have to design something else new for the 2018's.
I think the crash bars are under plastic and not pronounced like previous Generations of Wing.

Re: Hard Shift 1st to 2nd

If you are making shifts from 1st to 2nd in a turn on the Dragon at slow speeds you are going WAY TOO SLOW The GL1800 has the power (torque) to START in 2nd and pull at nearly any slow speed so using 1st may be a challenge. I do ALL of my parking lot maneuvers in 2nd gear - 1st gear is only to star...
