Re: gl1100 rpm's high between shifting

Let me see if I understand you correctly. If you are cruising down the road say in third gear and you twist back the throttle and then pull the clutch lever the RPM jump up? If so I would check to see where my iddle setting is first and if it has a tendency of high revving and holding high RPM in ne...

Re: Painting front fender 82 gl1100

If you are painting a part that has a tendency to move a bit, you can get some flex additive to add to the paint.

Re: Scott's 1982 GL1100 Rebuild

Since I replaced the timing belts yesterday and had all the covers off I went ahead and set the valve clearances today. Studied up on the tutorial in the How-To section and went at it. Pretty simple, the hardest part was reading my feeler guages as they have blackened over time and I really had to s...

Re: Carb Sync problem

I like Isandfd's suggestion. Easy way to test is to find one cylinder that is reading well and attach all the hoses to it one at a time and see if they all show the same reading. Hoping I'm not asking a dumb question but did you bench synch it before you installed the carbs on the bike?

Re: Scott's 1982 GL1100 Rebuild

Thanks Pat. Yeah I was planning on reusing the old gasket but the covers are aftermarket and when I removed them I noticed that whoever worked on it last used some clear silicone on them obviously to keep them from leaking. Plus they used blue silicone on some of the bolts so that made me worry a li...

Re: Scott's 1982 GL1100 Rebuild

IMAG1097.jpg So today I changed the timing belts. When I took the covers off I realized that they are aftermarket covers like the valve covers. Also noticed that the left side pulley was a tooth off in the timing marks. Ended up using littlebeavers tutorial on changing the belts which is awesome by...

Re: What do I do when one of the timing belts is a tooth off

Well the swap is done and it took less than 30 minutes. Not to bad even though one belt was a tooth off. It is kinda nice to know that given the age and the fact that it only has ten thousand miles on it someone already replaced the belts before. But now I have brand new ones and the experience of h...

Another question, do you guys use loctite on the tensioner bolts or have a torque setting to use on them?

Re: What do I do when one of the timing belts is a tooth off

I like you idea Indianakid. I was just thinking about using littlebeavers idea of using sockets and C-clamps to secure the pulleys and then loosen the tensioners and when I had the left side belt off remove the C-clamp and rotate the left side pulley to lign up with the marks and then reapply the C-...

What do I do when one of the timing belts is a tooth off?

So I decided to change the timing belts today. And when I ligned up the T1 on the crank the right side pulley ligned up perfectly, but the left side was off by about a tooth. What is the fix here?

Re: Help with rusted fuel tank in N.E. FL.

No offense, but why spend 55 on a tank that is already old and rusty and has dents in it that could mean metal fatigue, when you can spend $25 and just clean out a tank you already have? You'd still have to derust the ebay tank.

Re: Scott's 1982 GL1100 Rebuild

Well friends it has been a long time since I have done anything to the wing. I got her running a while back and then stopped all work to finish my finals. Then a buddy needed help so I spent my time working on his bike fixing it and then repainting it. Since then he has dropped it and destroyed the ...

Re: Any updates on de-rusting fuel tanks?

It actually is that simple. I used a gallon on my tank, but I did remove it and then rotated the tank every 8 hours for 2 days for complete coverage. If you go to my thread Scotts 1982 Gl1100 rebuild I took some pics of it working on my gas cap and sending unit. I swear by this stuff cause it is soo...

Re: Help with rusted fuel tank in N.E. FL.

Ha ha, i just posted the same advice Pat gave you on your other thread. Doh!! Anyway, more than likely you just have debris in the line in conjunction with varnished gas that is blocking it. Metal rescue eats rust. Try to blow some compressed air into the tank from the petcock holes and see if that ...

Re: gas tank must be clogged inside if....

Here is what to do. Go buy some Metal Rescue, you can find it at some Home Depot stores or online at Summit racing. I used a gallon on my tank and rotated the tank every 8 hours for 2 days. Came out looking brand new. Also one of my sump lines in the tank was blocked so I shot some air through it af...

Re: Need help ASAP

I would start with checking the wiring connections. Something may have worked or pulled loose thus causing some of the issues. Also you did mention "buddies GF" so, and I'm just saying here, why didn't you have her insurance pay to have any damages fixed?

Re: Greg's GL1100 Winter Project

Couple of tips here from my experiences. When painting prep work is King! When painting base light coats are best to start from but as you apply the final coats they should be "wet" meaning more paint applied and a smooth wet looking coat. After putting the clear on it should look nice but a little ...

Re: Any updates on de-rusting fuel tanks?

You don't have to remove the tank. If you buy 1 gallon and then insert something into the tank for ballast, like a trash bag and then fill it with air to displace the volume, a gallon can cover the entire tank and little effort on your part. Simple!

Two words.......Metal Rescue. its the simplest and most effective method out there. Anyone who has tried the stuff is amazed at how it works. It doesnt damage anything if you spill it, you dont have to shake it, you can leave it in there for a day or a week and it makes no difference, and you can ju...

No kidding, this one had me really stumped. And to think he took it to a professional bike mechanic who used incorrect parts and a shoddy attempt at a quick fix. Great help from you guys tho.
