Carburetor conversion

The carbs on my 83 are no longer doing the job. Okay yes I likely can rebuild them and make them work. However. I recently saw another gl1200 (mine is a gl1100) with a single 2 barrel carb that worked real good. Has anyone done a carb conversion? I know I will need to build a box to mount the carb t...

Coils

The coils on my 83 gl1100a are shot (one cracked all the way around and non-functioning the other has a 2" crack in it) I saw post about replacing these with coil from a dodge neon. I have been looking at using a set of 3ohm coils from a H/D (I can get them at a reasonable price). Is there any reaso...

Re: Throttle cable

Yes. It is in correctly. I checked on that. I usually lock in the mount on the handlebars before I lock in the mount on the carbs.

I am going to try another brand of throttle cable.

Re: Throttle cable

It fraud and brakes right at the lead.

I have checked everything for sharp or restricted edges and found nothing.
My return (push) cable is several years old.

My 82 is not having this issue (it has factory honda cables)

Throttle cable

I own an 83 and an 83 gl1100a. This morning I (again) broke the pull throttle cable on my 83. I last replaced the same cable about two months ago, and only two months before that. Each time it breaks it is at the handle right at the connector. I have verified that the edges are not sharp or restrict...

Re: Brake calipers

Spent the day working on front brakes. I bleed both and went for a ride, still spongy. I clamped off the left line and took a ride, still spongy. Swapped clamp to the right line and took another ride, good solid brakes. I will be looking at replacing all the brake lines with braided stainless steel ...

Re: Brake calipers

Air is not getting into the brake system. The system gets spongy after a rebuild and remains spongy after being bled. I put master cylinder from a Valkery on after the old one was damaged (a Valkery is essentially a goldwing 1500). Brake lines are newer factory lines (purchased new in 2013 from hond...

Brake calipers

I have been struggling with the brake calipers on my 82 goldwing. I have rebuilt all 3 twice now. Right after the rebuild they all seem to work great, but within weeks they start getting spongy. I bleed them but they remain spongy. Someone told me to replace all 3 calipers and lines with modern afte...

Re: Lingering White Smoke

I fully agree. I live in Florida and have replaced head gasket(s) several times.
One thing I have learned is not to go cheap, but only Honda gaskets. For some reason these bikes do not like aftermarket head gaskets.

Re: towing

Thanks. The small trailer I have I normally carry stuff locally. However I do carry alot of stuff for camping (including a large cooler loaded with drinks and ice).
Anything much over 400# I might consider getting electric brakes.

towing

I own an 83 GL1100a with 84,000 miles, the bike runs great and I own a small (4x4) trailer to haul trash and such around. I want to build a basic camper (4x8). No frills just a mattress and maybe a light and an ac unit. And I am interested in what the towing capabilities are for my bike? I have upda...

Re: head gasket help!

Headgasket purchased from Saber Cycle for a GL1100. 100% that's your problem. Saber Cycle gaskets are known to be paper-thin garbage, and you're now realizing why we warn everybody away from buying any products from them. Not only are their products absolute junk, their customer service is amongst ...

Re: head gasket help!

I cleaned head and block and scuffed the surfaces with 220 grit paper. I measued both the head and block for level. I installed a new head gasket and tightened the bolts to 40 psi torque using a good qualty torque wrench. Engine starts and runs great but oil is leaking from top of head (thru headgas...

measured head and block for trueness and both are within .0001 so that shows both head and block are flat and true. head gasket has 3 hole (about size of a large needle) and 2 small pin holes all located right around #3 cyl but between both cyls. someone has said it could be microbial from water bei...

Always start simple. A click indicates a complete circuit. So look at the battery. Batterys tend to last 1 to 3 years.... it may simply need a charge.

head gasket help!

Twice in last year the head gasket failed on #1 cyl (first time) and now on cyl #3. I am replacing with a new honda head gasket after first cleaning head and block of "all" old gasket. Book says not to use any sealant but I am wondering if I should not use something to help gasket seal so this does ...

Re: Overheating

Locate the water in take (on top of engine behind radiator). this is where the thermostat is housed and where temperature sending unit and fan switch are located. Looking from the right hand side of bike you will see two wires going into the fan switch. directly behind this is the temperature sendin...

Re: clicking,starting bike

Could be as simple as a dirty connection. I would look at cables from battery to solenoid to starter and see if any are loose or dirty (nows chance to clean all of them) and don't forget the ground wire. The clicking is usually a tell tail of not enough current getting to the starter. Assuming the c...

Re: Temperature sensor fan switch?

My 83 in Florida (outside temps over 100 degrees) then add the engine operating and long read lights with only 100 degree air being pulled thru the fan... yeah the bike gets hot.. I run a 165 degree thermostat and check coolant regularly, yet temps climb well over 1/2 the gauge...

Re: !!!HELP!!! Indicator lights going crazy!

Lets start at the basics. All the lights are on individual circuits! Power goes from the battery to the fuse block and out to each circuit. when you replaced the ignition did you use a OEM part for that year bike or did you use a used part from who knows what? Do you have a repair manual with a wiri...

Re: Overheating

Water is key... If there is no water in the radiator the engine wont cool... OK so there is water. is it flowing, or is the pump broken or the thermostat stuck? (see admins advise) if you replace the thermostat buy one of the safestat's as these break open so you dont overheat.

Re: Flat rear Tire

My two cents... Plugs are ok to get you moving and to someplace safe (or home) but ASAP I remove the tire and put in a good quality patch. or any the case of a front tire I just buy a new tire. My life is worth more than a tire or a patch....
