Re: 1981 GL1100 tires

Metzeler lasertec come in those sizes. Some folks had problems with Metzeler MC tires....not sure which model. Maybe someone will post the info. I'm really happy with my Michelin Commander2 tires on my 83...they don't have sizes for the early 1100s

Re: Occasional Fuel Leak from Vent Hose at #3 Carb

I was thinking the same thing....no overflow tubes/hoses. A leak at carb #3 could be from the accelerator pump. If the diaphragm fails gas will travel up the shaft and leak from the carb body....I had this happen. The symptoms were different though....I kept smelling gas when I was riding but couldn...

Re: Progressive springs

The progressive springs are a single spring for each side....the factory springs are two springs per side....pull them both. When I did my 83 I found that the oil was nothing more than a grey sludge...probably still the original oil. I used diesel fuel to clean them out before i put in the new ATF. ...

Re: LED Gauge Cluster

Yes...they're a lot better. $_57.JPG This is what I mean by a tower type... they also make them with a single LED....a narrow beam would be more like a flashlight as opposed to a spotlight... I'm pretty sure your 82 takes the other kind of base...the push & turn "Bayonet" base. 83 takes the wedge ba...

Re: LED Gauge Cluster

I changed the bulbs in my 83 to LED bulbs. I got a "tower" type bulb from Ebay. I ended up changing the idiot lights back to regular bulbs....with the LEDs you could see the chips on the top of the bulbs. I didn't like the look. I found conventional bulbs at the local parts store that were a bit hig...

Re: Clutch cable broke, lever won't move

I always carry a spare cable on my '78 GL. It came in handy, many years ago on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but was definitely a challenge for me to change it at the time. Now I still carry a spare cable in case the shop doesn't have one in stock, but I also have CAA/AAA roadside service to get me home ...

Re: oil leak

The rear seal of the waterpump seals to the crankcase so that's where the oil is coming from. If the bike still has the original waterpump with the bakelite impeller it's probably time to replace it. You would be looking at about $175 for an OEM pump and gasket set.

Re: !980 Goldwing gl1100 throttle bog

When I rebuilt my carbs I failed to set the floats and my bike would not rev past 3500 RPM. You can check by taking off the air cleaner and running the bike up to where it tops out and then feed it SMALL spritzes of starting fluid....it should rev up to redline. I'd check with whomever rebuilt your ...

Re: I need bright lights!!

If your bike still has the original headlight replacing it with a new one will make a world of difference....the reflector inside gets dull & faded with age. Our wings take a standard 7" motorcycle headlight....there are tons of options out there...check Ebay for a start. I replaced mine with a Harl...

+1 on the Randakk kit! You can get a kit for almost a hundred cheaper on Ebay....don't be tempted. Several of us have made that mistake.

412 I have these on my 83 Interstate along with Progressive springs in the forks. When I drained the forks the oil was nothing more than a grey sludge....only 29K original miles...age is the killer...cleaned the fork lowers out with diesel fuel before i reassembled them. I ride solo without a heavy ...

Sounds like they are shorter than stock. I actually considered putting 1200 shocks on my 1100 (longer shocks) to get even more ground clearance but I couldn't find a definitive answer as to the bushings being the same

I replaced my worn out OEM shocks with the 412s & am very happy with them. If you really want air you could rebuild the airshocks with Progressive springs and new seals.

...and I almost hate to say it but....the O.P. is in Canada. I think it gets cold in Canada. If the bike didn't have good antifreeze in it there could be cracks in the block or head.....
