Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

When the hell is this heat gonna let up?????? I haven't even touched the Honda since early July! Just too hot and knees too weak. But I'm still lurking around! Gotta cool down sooner or later.

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

Have'nt had her out for a little over a month so I thought I'd take her out for a spin. She started right up. I had forgot how smooth the ride would be and how much power she had after riding my Triumph.

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

My buddy and I were going out for a ride and he accidently tipped over my GW when parked in his driveway. I noticed three was rusty water that had leaked out from somewhere. I can't figure out where it came from. It layed down on it's right side with no damage except for a small road rash on the mu...

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

Fred Camper indicates there is a Blue wire that goes to one of the coils. My schematic doesn't indicate one but I do seem to remember one when I removed the coils last week.

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

Ok, so my coils came in this evening, TEK MP08's, and it's raining outside so I thought I'd do a little schematic theory on how these coils should be wired. Would like feedback from those who have done this mod or expertise knowledge of it. This is how I read the schematic: Coil Feeding #1/2 plugs……...

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

The ballast resistor supports the points, sonic you have electronic timing then the ballast resistor goes away. Good plan. Sorry, did not know the numbers of the coils. So does the 1500 also use a waste spark system? Would like to add that to my memory if true. Hi Fred. Don't know what a waste spar...

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

Gonna do a coil conversion using GL1500 coils. Will not have to use a ballast resistor and will have a spare coil and wires. Bought it on eBay for $32 delivered. I'll have to do a little mod on the mount and would be necessary to cut a little of the air cleaner housing air horn which I have already ...

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

It is not a problem that the wires cannot be removed from 35 year old coils. If you replaced the wires, then next week you would go back after a ride in the rain to replaced the Coil with a hairline crack. Gl1200 coils have removable wires and work well but require a bracket modification as their d...

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

Just went outside and started her up and the rough idle is back but runs well when given the gas. Pulled the plug wires off, one by one while running, and the number two makes no difference. The wire is firing but somethings wrong either with the plug or compression. Don't have time to check it out ...

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

"STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES!" Famous quote from somewhere but applies to me. The problem "WAS" that my plugs were gapped at .028 , like the specs say, but when I re-gapped to .031 all my ailments went away. I guess when they get older they need more gap. Anyway if anyone has similar problems just open...

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

Pulled off the coils to give them a visual check. Ohmed out both coils and they are the same. Ohmed the ballast resistor and checks out. (Don't ask what values they were cause I don't remember.) Cleaned plugs and checked gaps. Found one bad plug wire insulator and replaced it, cut 1/4" off each wire...

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

Gave her a bath, couple days ago, and things just aren't the same! Decided to wash the GW using "S-100" moto wash and that stuff is really good. Must have got something wet that wasn't supposed to. Seems like it's running on three cylinders at idle but runs good going down the road. Gonna check out ...

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

Ron that is quite a fleet you have collected. Not a bad ride in all of them. Seems like the Triumph most overlaps with the Valk. But you know what gets the most miles and which get the most smiles. Still finding a lot of time to ride the '77 GW. The ride is sooooo quiet and smooth! The Valkyrie get...

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

Put that out of your mind and stop accepting your inner case of MBS. You need a bagger ( your wing with saddlebags) and a Naked (Triumph works for that). Well thinning out the herd would still leave me my Valkyrie, 80 GW and the Triumph. I just don't have the room for them. No garage and no car por...

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

Haven't done very much on the moto lately. My knees have really been bothering me for the past couple of weeks. I also have been having a laborer doing a lot of yard projects I've been putting off for awhile and have been directing his efforts. Gotta get back on it as I "may" have to sell her in ord...

Uh oh! Trouble in paradise! Look below to see what followed me home, almost, last week. Had to hide it at a friends house until I can figure out how to keep my life in tact! Yes, "fear the wife!" "Happy wife, happy home!" 2005 Triumph Speedmaster, 865cc with custom paint and seat.

Re: Center stand woes!

Nobody buys a 34 year old bike to just ride. They are for wrenching on, and when we are ready for a wrenching break then we take a ride. Sometimes that break can go on for several days. I've been riding her a lot. I don't even have the desire to ride my Valyrie much anymore. The '77 GW is a nice, a...

Re: Forum Newbie 1977 GL 1000

Was that a factory option? Does it use the stock mounting bolts for the horn? Does the bike accelerate hard when it goes off? I used the left side, of the horn mount plate, to mount the relay and ground on it's back side. On the right side, of the horn mount, I used a longer bolt and two nuts to se...

Good video and very interesting idea. However I think I'm gonna stick with my vacuum gauges.

Re: Center stand woes!

I bought a new/used center stand that is in better condition and will install it when I get a chance. The one currently on just doesn't seem in that good of condition. The new/used one seems a little more sturdily made and probably came off a later model. I had hoped when I installed the new rear ti...
