Re: 81 GL1100 smelly exhaust

My guess is, people who think the exhaust gas smells are used to the odor of tail pipe fumes after they've passed through a catalytic converter and have been finely tweaked by an on-board computer that manipulates the fuel-air mixture to the best ability of the design at the time the car was built, ...

Re: blue pipes

When chrome gets hot, it changes color. It isn't abnormal for some bluing to occur... if the pipes get purple or brown, it's probably a fuel/air mixture problem. If you have access to a set of gauges, it wouldn't hurt to make sure the carbs are balanced.. I think things are probably okay

Re: another failed wheel bearing

The person who installed the (currently) wrecked bearings, could have ruined them when they were installed, as Wingman suggested. Bearings that "fit" into a recess corresponding with the outer diameter should be "pressed" with the force applied to the outer race. Same goes for bearings that fit on t...

Re: Video showing of the Goldwing

If your clutch fluid is brown, you really should flush the line between the master cylinder and the slave cylinder and refill with clean fluid. The fluid loss is likely the result of a leaking seal in the slave cylinder or in a loose banjo fitting (or bad crush washers in the fitting) where the clut...

Re: another failed wheel bearing

I would NOT use moly paste on the bearings. The best grease I've ever used in ball bearings is a Chevron product called SRI-2 grease. It is an "EP" grease, meaning it is designed for "extreme pressure" and it works great in ball bearings... if you don't like that idea, pack them with good quality wh...

Re: another failed wheel bearing

I do not know how Honda would have you install those bearings, but I would set them so that the sealed side faces the (potential) dirt... so, I'd mount them seals facing outward. I'm currently at work (yeah, I know... get back to it you bum) but when I get home, I'll have a look at my shop manual to...

Re: Update on "Black Beard" and a story too

I wish I had your shop and your patience. Sorry to read the bike fell over... I do like a good series of photos where a bike is being worked over... by the time you're done, Black Beard will be good as a new one. P.S. nothing wrong with doing the cooking BTW She doesn't mind as long as I continue to...

Re: another failed wheel bearing

It's not out of the question for you to have received a bad bearing from whomever it was you bought them from. I bought all mine from "All Balls" on Ebay as "sets" with seals and I've never had a problem.. replaced front and rear on the 1200 and 1100 ... all bought from the same place. I feel your p...

Re: another failed wheel bearing

I know some of what I write won't help much or provide any ease your frustration, but... It is highly irregular to have multiple ball bearing failures in the same location/application unless there stresses at work that lead to the failure. Since these are sealed or shielded (sealed, I think) bearing...

Re: Update on "Black Beard" and a story too

I agree. I also don't understand the attitude of some folks regarding other riders on the highway, either... many mornings on my way to work, I encounter (I call him scooter-man in my head) a guy riding a scooter in the same direction I'm headed. I ALWAYS wave when I pass him (safely, in a passing z...

Re: What is your mileage on your goldwing?

A lot of motorcycles just sit. Some are fortunate to sit in fairly temperature and humidity controlled garages... others sit in barns. A few years ago, I bought a 1981 GL500 with 5400 miles on it... two years ago, I bought a 1981 Virago with 9600 miles on it... they're out there, if you look for the...

Re: 1200 front wheel

Is it the wheel isn't centered or the fender isn't centered? Take a tape measure or ruler and check the rim to fork clearance on both sides of the wheel. If the wheel isn't centered in the forks, that's a problem...

Re: Fuel Mileage poll

Over the past few years, our gasoline prices have fallen to the current local price of about $2.40-$2.50 per (US) gallon. There was a brief dip in price all the way down to &1.75/gallon a couple of months ago, but the price climbed back above $2.25 fairly quickly and has seemed to stagnate where it ...

Re: Fuel Mileage poll

I agree. One of my coworkers has a Prius that gets about 5-10 MPG better than my motorcycle... That's about what I got on my 1990, 35-37 mpg. At the risk of starting something, if you're riding a motorcycle to save gas, a big touring bike isn't for you. I have a 2013 Honda Accord that gets about the...

Re: Ethanol! Yes or No?

Just a word of caution, based on personal experience, regarding those "real gas" web sites. I checked one for local ethanol-free gas stations... rode 30 miles to fill up on some Shell, ethanol free, gas... only to discover when I got there that all their fuel has ethanol in it. I don't know if the s...

It would be great if someone could trailer his bike to a safe place until he can deal with the break down... last word was he had to leave it on a highway on (or off) ramp. Makes me wish I had some free time to go pick it up, but it's a few thousand miles from home.. Still wishing safe and fun trave...

Back in the old days, we stopped rust with "Naval Jelly" (which I understand is an acidic gel of sorts) then cleaned the area with a solvent followed by paint. Rustoleum sells paint products that can more or less bypass the Naval Jelly, cleaning, painting with a little wire brushing and painting dir...

Re: Buying a 1981 gl1100 Goldwing.

Depending on how familiar you are with riding a heavy motorcycle, the wobble may be perception more than reality... then again, there may be issues with the bike. Check tires for cupping, loose forks in the steering head, loose axle clamp fasteners... etc. The swing arm having rust on it, in and of ...

Re: Ethanol! Yes or No?

I just pulled the carb from my push mower (this morning) because it wouldn't run for more than a few minutes. It's a few years old, has a Honda engine on it, and has always been reliable. My son was cutting grass yesterday, and the mower just started stalling on him... I emptied the bowl a few times...

That's pretty horrific evidence of what a few seconds of distraction can cause. I imagine there isn't a one of us that doesn't have an anecdote of how a distracted or inattentive driver nearly involved us in a similar crash (perhaps not at that speed?) ... I can't say I've seen a worse wreck... it's...
