Re: 85 goldwing aspencade clutch

What was the old clutch pack like - any photos - as when disassembled it would have provided some clues as to what your issue was.

Re: Temp gauge?

Maybe your thermostat is not opening at all - does your radiator cap get hot ? Maybe your water pump impeller is not working. Maybe your system is clogged. 1. Open the radiator cap - expect a small amount of coolant to run out, start the bike and let it warm up - if you rev the bike a bit - you shou...

Re: 85 goldwing aspencade clutch

The purpose of tying the clutch lever back is so that the oil from the motor when warmed up should get to enter the clutch basket, and then hopefully lubricate the stuck plates enough that they will release. I have had one stuck for quite a few tries - but you need to be gentle in the pressure appli...

Re: 85 goldwing aspencade clutch

Probably clutch plates are stuck together. If you can put it on the centre stand - start bike and put in gear, then use a zip tie to tie the clutch lever back. Then let it run and warm up for a while and slowly press the rear brake lever to slow it down - not stall it, do this as many times as it ta...

Re: 82 1100 Aspencade won't start - too much oil?

Nice to hear,

Also a good learning experience for you - though it cost a bit for the new oil and a bit of time...:)

I'm positive you won't make the same mistake again

cheers

Re: GL 1000

Sounds like the starter motor is still a problem, and or the cables are internally corroded.

Re: speedometer

It will last a long time - it doesn't dry out..
I probably would not use oil as it can attract dust and cause further issues - whereas the graphite does not. But I would use it on the cable only.

Re: 82 1100 Aspencade won't start - too much oil?

Depending on the ago of the "old" oil that was in there - make your own decision if you need to put further "fresh" oil in. I see it as if you are not riding the bike for a period of time, it really won't hurt the bike to sit for a few months with a mixture of the old and new oil blend. If you reall...

Re: Pop pop pop

Maybe a collapsed shock absorber - but if it's when power is applied through the drive train I would suspect the whole assembly. If you put bike on centrestand - in neutral I would be turning the rear wheel by hand and see if you can locate the pop or feel if there is a lot of play in the rear wheel...

Re: 82 1100 Aspencade won't start - too much oil?

First off - welcome, Next - drain the oil via the oil drain bolt - then refill with the correct amount of oil - don't try and start the bike first to warm the oil up. I would just re-use the old oil as it comes out - it will be a mix of the new and old oils.... Then I would check the battery connect...

Re: 1981 GL 1100 bike won't start

As you have mentioned - it lives, now it needs some TLC so it can live longer and healthier. First issue sounds like plugged carbs - so off they come for a good clean - don't be dismayed they may need a second clean - because once you clean them - do it again as you probably missed some passages etc...

Re: Flushing my radiator; pieces of rubber coming out.

The pieces are definitely rubber - or are they bits of black plastic? I suppose they could be coming from an old radiator cap or maybe some black rtv? but if the hoses feel soft or totally hard - then I would be looking to replace them for starters. Leaving your radiator empty overnight should not b...

Re: Protect newly polished aluminum covers

I used on a CB750 valve cover bees wax which had been polished professionally. I applied the wax when the motor was cold and liberally rubbed it in for about 10 minutes to make sure I got every nook and cranny. The cloth I was using came away quite back - even after all the polishing and cleaning - ...

IF it is dry - try some graphite -powder - beware it is messy.

OR try some light machine oil - slowly dripped into the top of the cable.

Re: How to Clean Crabs 1982 GL 1100

Try 2.5 to start - just make sure you do them all the same - when you screw them all the way in - be gentle, as you don't want to over tighten them.

Re: Might need a new motor...

Maybe you need to clean #2 carb- does it still have the same symptoms if you take the plug lead off it doesn't affect the idle ? IF so then I think it needs to be cleaned again.

Have you also done a valve clearance check?

Re: Introduction Thread

Hi Richard, MY first wing was an 81 GL1100 interstate, and prior to that a CX500 custom, and I was sad to see the GL1100 go when I purchased a very low mileage 1988 GL1500. The GL1100 just had so much character it was very hard to part with it - especially after bringing it back to a good state of r...
