Re: Might need a new motor...

Pull the rack and fix #1 first. Save you some further dollars as the carb is probably not clean or has an issue. Possible stuck slide ?? or torn diaphragm.

Re: 1982 GL1100 Fan

You can short the fan out - to see if it runs - then check the temp switch it may need to be replaced.

Re: Might need a new motor...

I reckon you have plugged lines in your carbs - and maybe a vacuum leak - test for vacuum leaks first.. fix them and you are probably then able to sync a lot easier. With your sync gauge did you try another gauge in the #1 where you couldn't adjust - could just be a crappy gauge that is off. If so -...

Re: How to Clean Crabs 1982 GL 1100

If you put them back on the bike - you would need to bleed them if you disconnected the brake hose.. Another way of ejecting the pistons is to use a grease gun and slowly pump them full of grease - it is messy but works well, depends on if when you pushed the pistons back in if they went back in str...

Re: 1987 1200 Interstate Issues

New rear tyre, new head stem bearings, maybe a brace on the front as well - "Superpbrace". Properly inflated tyres and more practice.. Counter steering is the same whatever bike you are riding - it also depends when you transition from steering it normally - as in very slow parking lot and counter-s...

Re: How to Clean Crabs 1982 GL 1100

Just be really thorough with the cleaning - you will think they are clean - then do them again. I had a set on my old CB750 SOHC - cleaned them 3 times before they worked properly - years of non-use and a lot of corrosion in the internals - but when cleaned - it was a totally different bike. Good lu...

Take the two inlet stubs leading to the cylinders off the right hand bank will make it easier to remove to the left.

Re: How to Clean Crabs 1982 GL 1100

Basically you would need to strip your CARBS down and clean all the jets and passages - reassemble then bench sync them, once reinstalled you may need to fine tune the sync.

Re: How to Clean Crabs 1982 GL 1100

I suppose you have missed my point..

Carburrettors are usually shortened to CARBS not CRABS.

A crab is a marine crustacean and very nice to eat - but you need to cook them first - usually by boiling :D

My sincere apologies for having fun at your expense.

Re: Slow tire leaks

Spray some mixed up detergent and water around the valve stems and move them about - see if some bubbles form, you can do the same thing around the perimeters of both rims/tyres... should let you know easily where the leak or leaks are.

Re: Speedo and tach issues

You would need to disassemble the speedo itself - I've never done that - it depends on if you can separate the speedo casing, if so you should be able to reattach the needle..

Look on the internet for a possible solution - and also I would be looking for possible a replacement speedo.

cheers

Re: Speedo and tach issues

I would think from your symptoms described you will need to invest in two new cables - the cables do need some lubrication - so not strange to hear that screeching sound is where it becomes bound up and eventually snaps somewhere along its length. Pretty easy to confirm - just remove the cable from ...

Re: Barn find fuel issue

Plugged jets in the carbs - may need a rebuild - or just a good clean out... sitting for that long it should be a planned job - just like the timing belts.

Do it once - do it properly and enjoy the benefits of years of riding - trouble free - fingers crossed :)

Re: Gas tank rust

Is there a section on top of the tank (after the seat is removed) that is used for the fuel level gauge.. If you wanted to run the tank low on fuel, then remove that cover might give you access to at least put a small container in there under the lid access to catch a lot of the dust debris if you p...

Try it without using any choke - and check to ensure the off run off switch engaged to "run" - but it sounds on the first attempt there is a slight "kick" sound of trying to start..

Re: Clutch cover leaking (78 GL1000)....tried EVERYTHING...almost...

I can still see gasket residue on the studs either side of the bottom one - so you still need to clean that area - plus the actual clutch cover may need some work to make sure it is flat..

Your gasket cutting is pretty good

Re: what strength loctite to use

Use BLUE coloured loctite, the RED colour is for Permanent. But I'm sure the original never used loctite anyway - the correct use of a tension wrench should be your friend for this job.
