Re: How to Clean Crabs 1982 GL 1100

IF it is dry - try some graphite -powder - beware it is messy.

OR try some light machine oil - slowly dripped into the top of the cable.

Re: How to Clean Crabs 1982 GL 1100

First off remove the cable from the back of the tachometer - then lubricate it... probably quite dry..

Re: How to Clean Crabs 1982 GL 1100

Try 2.5 to start - just make sure you do them all the same - when you screw them all the way in - be gentle, as you don't want to over tighten them.

Re: Might need a new motor...

Maybe you need to clean #2 carb- does it still have the same symptoms if you take the plug lead off it doesn't affect the idle ? IF so then I think it needs to be cleaned again.

Have you also done a valve clearance check?

Re: What's Happening Today?

Gotta love potholes - but at least it was in the car- might have been different if you were on the bike.

Still an expensive morning.

Re: Introduction Thread

Hi Richard, MY first wing was an 81 GL1100 interstate, and prior to that a CX500 custom, and I was sad to see the GL1100 go when I purchased a very low mileage 1988 GL1500. The GL1100 just had so much character it was very hard to part with it - especially after bringing it back to a good state of r...

Re: Is This Rim Trashed?

Personal opinion would be to just buy another one. I feel it would be cheaper than trying to repair the current damage and concern your self with the fine tolerances to be a satisfactory repair.

Re: What's Happening Today?

Here is a link to a very brief video -of the bike starting.

Nothing startling as we had some issues during the day - and one of the injectors is not working - but it started

Re: What's Happening Today?

Well - didn't finish up exciting but things did happen. Went over to see Seagrass this morning, as it was hopeful that we might be able to start the Turbo from its long hibernation - but things did not go to plan - no biggie, but a lot of progress was made in getting it further along the line in rea...

Re: Impossible cold starts

You need a strong battery - and all electrical connections to be clean and corrosion free. Most times a new battery will fix the problems... any history or age of the existing battery ? Sometimes when the battery is down a bit on charge, you can crank it for a second or two and release the start but...

Re: What's Happening Today?

With any luck I might be able to post a video of my 1982 CX500 Turbo being started for the first time in about 9 years. I managed to dismantle it slowly over a few years and now a friend has been putting it back together for me and doing some checks as it gets rebuilt. Video might get take over this...

Re: Huge Motorcycle Aftermarket Group files for Chapter 11

Very interesting reading - large corporations struggling - but we will let someone else pull us out of the fire - in the interim lets rack up some more debt... This will have flow on effects to a lot of people if and when some of the companies mentioned fold or go under and leave people/business owe...

Probably a floor jack under the sump. Hold it straight and lift it up, then slide the plywood underneath.

Re: 1982 GL1100 Fan

Where your wires connect to the fan - back track them and one will go to the temperature sensor. Once you establish where the sensor is you can remove it and test it in some boiling water - there will be instructions in the Service manual how to do this... just work slowly.

Re: Might need a new motor...

Pull the rack and fix #1 first. Save you some further dollars as the carb is probably not clean or has an issue. Possible stuck slide ?? or torn diaphragm.

You can short the fan out - to see if it runs - then check the temp switch it may need to be replaced.

Re: Might need a new motor...

I reckon you have plugged lines in your carbs - and maybe a vacuum leak - test for vacuum leaks first.. fix them and you are probably then able to sync a lot easier. With your sync gauge did you try another gauge in the #1 where you couldn't adjust - could just be a crappy gauge that is off. If so -...

Re: How to Clean Crabs 1982 GL 1100

If you put them back on the bike - you would need to bleed them if you disconnected the brake hose.. Another way of ejecting the pistons is to use a grease gun and slowly pump them full of grease - it is messy but works well, depends on if when you pushed the pistons back in if they went back in str...

Re: 1987 1200 Interstate Issues

New rear tyre, new head stem bearings, maybe a brace on the front as well - "Superpbrace". Properly inflated tyres and more practice.. Counter steering is the same whatever bike you are riding - it also depends when you transition from steering it normally - as in very slow parking lot and counter-s...

Does it hold the synch when you slightly increase the revs?
