Re: Help with Tire Selection and What is Available

Al, I have a '78 GL. I had run Bridgestone Spitfire II tires for years, but now they're difficult to impossible to obtain. So I had to go on the hunt for an alternative. I ended up ordering and receiving a pair of Shinko 230 Tourmaster tires. They've been getting very good reviews, and are priced ri...

Re: Do you wear your " Helmet "

Thanks John, for posting those photos. I went through them very slowly, one by one, and everytime I brought up a new image I would pause and think again, just how fragile life can be. I say think again because I was involved in, not a motorcycle crash but a car crash, that put me in ICU for 2 1/2 we...

Re: Proficient Motorcycling: The Ultimate Guide to Riding Well

I think the stars must have been aligned quite well this time. I just read our January 2018 Monthly Newsletter, and was drawn to the mention of David Hough's book, "Proficient Motorcycling: The Ultimate Guide To Riding Well." It sounded like a read, and one that I'd find interesting, so I ordered a ...

Re: Motorcycle stuff for Christmas

I got some pretty basic, but very necessary, and much appreciated stuff, from my son and daughter. All OEM parts. That's what I like. Four new NGKs, an oil filter, and a fuel filter. Five litres of Castrol 10W40, and a new Accutire digital air pressure gauge . I kind of suggested that one, when I wa...

Re: How cold will ya'll ride?

Not so much about riding in the cold, but somewhat related. This year, was a year of celebration up here in "The Great White North." It was Canada's 150th birthday as a nation. Every new years eve there's a party, with a concert and a fireworks display, held on Parliament Hill in the nations capital...

Re: Who Never Wears A Helmet

I'm one of the first ones to lobby for less government intervention in my life. But some of it is, unfortunately, often necessary to protect those who don't have control. Those, like wives, kids, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends etc. etc. etc. who are left suffering with the loss of a lo...

Re: Ethanol! Yes or No?

Just looking for a little bit of clarification regarding the provincial proposal to raise the minimum ethanol requirement by 2020, as posted above. I sent an email question to Chris Ballard, the Ontario Minister of the Environment and Climate Change. I've quoted the question, and the reply below. I'...

Re: Motorcycle Moon?

Pobably because there is more light on full moon and super moon nights, so more people out riding at night. That's a valid point. The line in the article that seems to reinforce that idea is, "The U.S. data found that about 9.1 motorcyclists died on average at night when there was a full moon, wher...

Re: Ethanol! Yes or No?

I just saw this article regarding how the govenment of Ontario is going to save me from myself, whether I like it or not, by raising the minimum allowable ethanol content in gasoline, to 10%. That will be the highest minimum for any province in Canada. Kind of makes me proud! It mentions that ...

Re: Antifreeze

I'm looking at ingredients on this bottle of genuine Honda coolant. It says, non-abrasive corrosion inhibitor. Is that the same as 100% silicate free? And would the 50/50 mix be with distilled water? I suspect that the answer will be yes, but I'm not positive. My GL1000 takes 3.4 quarts. This bottle...

100 mm Front Tire vs 110 mm Front Tire

If both the 100 mm and the 110 mm tires would fit on the front wheel of your bike, which one would you install, and why?

Thanks.................Dave :D

Here's a couple of pictures that you might find interesting. If you come across any others, I'm sure that they too would be welcome.
I think that there's a Goldwing in there somewhere, and the other one, just looks too risky if you ask me.

Re: Which tire?

So Dave, what miles did you get from your Spitfire? FM, I don't ride hard into corners, what's the point on a '78 GL? However, weather permitting, I do take fairly long day rides with very few stops. Probably 10% expressways, 50% secondary highways, and 40% winding backroads. All of this at, or abo...

Re: Which tire?

I've got a '78 GL, and obtaining acceptable tire sizes is becoming a problem. I've used Spitfires for years, and have always been impressed with their handling and their lifespan. Now I can't seem to obtain a factory size rear tire, and I prefer front and rear tires that are matched. I did some rese...

I'm just as confused as I ever was. Maybe that's no surprise. But I can never seem to get a straight answer. Maybe I'm missing something. Let me know what you think. I asked the following question on Sta-bil's question/answer link: "When using STAY-BIL 360º Marine, will adding more do a better job? ...

If I get to where I cannot hold up a two wheel motorcycle, I may go convertible car I think I'll have to agree with you on that one Viking. I Saw The Light!

I've always found it difficult to see just how close to my tires tread wear bar I am, especially when it's getting very close. So what I do is stand a credit card on its edge across the tread over the wear bar, and shine a flashlight on one side of the card. If I see light on the other side I know t...

Re: Shinko Tire Review

As I've said before, I average 10,000 plus miles per year on motorcycles. This since I started riding on the street in 1974. Which doesn't include off-road miles on my bikes with no odometer. I've never had a tire fail on me until Shinko. And now I've had two failures. I've actually, (unintentional...

Re: Michelin Pilot Activ and Pirelli Sport Demon

Thanks for that Dusty, Grip, wet and dry, is always a high priority, especially for a more aggresive rider, of which I am not. That generally comes from good design for water channelling, and softer compounds for better grip, often at the expense of the tires longevity. Also, my old '78, comparative...

Re: Headlight Upgrade

Thanks FM, from what you're saying the net gain doesn't cut it. The heat angle is risky. As I've been reading, most are complaining about the lifespan. The improvement in illumination appears minimal. And, at least up here in Canada, I'd be looking at $35 each. I think I'll stick with H4 55/60s I've...
