Re: wont rev past 5k

Floats set at 15.5mm with carb standing upright on intakes floats barely touching pin. I did however press down slightly on the tensioners for the belts when i tightened them up, Would that make a difference in the timing? As far as the fuel pump flow how would i check that? Thanks Duckem The belt ...

Re: Neon coil on gl1000...any new info?

I can now say with certainty a neon coil will work on a 1000. Got my 76 running but no fire to #3, sparks were jumping at the coils. I tried a set of 1100 coils, which work but there is not enough room for them. I checked the amp draw on bot the stock coils and the 80-81 1100 coils, both about 5 amp...

I can’t believe how big this bike is.
Park it next to any other model goldwing, a 1000 is small. Those mufflers look pretty good, worth quite a bit too.

Re: This could be a new one. Short to ground.

How have you determined the exciter circuit is grounded? You can't test it with an ohm meter without completely isolating it from the rest of the system. Does it have 12v disconnected from the alternator & with the key on or is blowing the ignition fuse?

Re: wont rev past 5k

Have you checked the fuel flow from the pump? Did you set the floats with them just resting on the pin or with the carbs upside down? Sounds like the belts might be too tight also.

Re: This could be a new one. Short to ground.

Update: pulled the dog bone fuse, battery disconnected. There is continuity between the top (battery post) and frame when I turn the key on. This should never happen, right? Another update: the starter has continuity between the positive terminal and the frame. Battery is still out, key on, key off...

Re: No electricity after 40 minutes

The single most common problem is the 30 amp dogbone fuse behind the trap door of the starter solenoid being hairline cracked. Unplug the 4 wire plug to gain access. Either replace it with the spare that's in the door or bypass it with a waterproof 30 amp fuse holder and blade types fuse. Not the mi...

Re: 1983 gl 1100 no front brake pressure

83s had linked brakes originally, the right front IIRC is tied to the rear brake, that might have been changed and if so the front master cylinder doesn't push enough fluid to work both front brakes.

Re: This could be a new one. Short to ground.

What if the output wire to the battery and the exciter wire are somehow shorted to each other, either directly, through the frame, or through some (melted) component? That could cause the alternator to think it needs to charge and shut off at the same time, right? It did get really hot when I ran i...

Could the sound come from failure in vacuum, on the left front cylender. I have the suspicion it could be an error.
Anything that causes one cylinder to not fire as strong as the others will make a noise in the intake that sounds sort of like a knock.

You would grind the head of the bolt off the inside of the frame so you can get it out and replace it.

You can ride it until the battery goes dead, which won't be very far.

How do I test the voltage regulator?
If the short goes away if you unplug it no testing is necessary, it's shorted.

I am no expert, but it seems when I did the test on the remote battery, it should have done the same thing. But it charged at 14+ volts.
If this "remote" battery is connected directly to the battery cables it seems to me your battery is the problem, new or not.

OK, to confirm, if I eliminate the short, will the continuity (C) from the positive cable at the battery before the solenoid, to the frame, be eliminated?
Yes it should be.

Re: Electrical Short

That is something someone added, disconnect it and anything else that seems not original. There are 2 places power goes without the switch on, to the voltage regulator and the ignition switch. Not likely to be the switch (possible though) and if you have unplugged the regulator there must be a short...

It'll just lay there in the bottom of the oil sump. All the spinning parts are above the oil level.
It won't get to the sump, it's behind a baffle that keeps oil from slinging out the breather. And no, all the spinning parts are NOT above the oil level, want proof?

The fuel smell by the way is in the exhaust, There are no leaks.
OK, synch probably won't fix that either. Not that it's not a good thing to do but it's not a cure all.
