How hard is to change timing belts on a 1800?

I thought those were chains?
Pretty doggone difficult since they are chains & they sure ain't going to fit a 1200.

I don't like to run that hard either, 75 is plenty fast on the slab. The bike is plenty capable of much faster but not for me. I do my hard running on the twisty roads.

Re: Dead Bike

Please do you and us a favor and check the main harness ground, it should be on or near the front coil mounting bolt on the right side, hard to tell from the picture in the ETM. Also I see where the spark units have different color connectors, make sure the colors of the connectors match.

I use 10/30 year round. The owners manual says it's good from -10 to 120ºF.

Re: Dead Bike

Ok something i hadnt thought of. The bank angle sensor! If its bad or stuck it could act like the kill switch and ground out the power from the coils which could explain the pulse at the green wires as those are the ground wires for the reg/rec. Any thoughts? No, it just shuts off the fuel system r...

Re: Dead Bike

I do get a pulse on the green wires (capped off green wires for the reg/rec) when i hit the start button but those wires are supposed to be capped off or chopped out when you do the alt conversion and as far as i know the only discrepancy on the bike. Before you ask yes i tried grounding them but g...

If the lights come on there is nothing wrong with the switch. It usually doesn't matter but you might try reversing the wires on the flasher.

A 1200 front wheel might work but the rear would not. If you could luck into some 83 wheels they are a direct fit.

Re: Cruise Control on a GL1200 LTD '85

It won't be the clutch switch, disconnecting it will not cause the cruise to not set. The front and rear brakes both have a double switch, 1 for the brake lights and one for the cruise. There is also a throttle cancel switch, not sure where it is on you LTD.

I guess the easy way would be to plug the vacuum line or disconnect the control unit or one of the cancel switches.

Re: My baby won't crank.

Pretty likely the problem is the starter. If you have a volt meter or a test light put the ground probe or clip on the battery negative, positive probe to the stud on the starter where the cable connects and push the button (key on). If your light lights or the meter shows battery voltage the starte...

Re: WHERE DOES THIS PIECE GO

It goes on the little ledge on the front (top) of the bracket, The slot goes down over the rotor, the ends of the brake pads sit against it.

Thanks all for the replys I only asked because ive been having issues with my turnsignals and all the wiring diagrams ive found show the 82i having one.
The buzzer wouldn't cause a problem with the signals even if it had one. What is your issue?

Re: please help me

In neutral, with the key on, pressing the starter button on the right handlebar control, will/should send 12v from the ignition switch (through/from the neutral switch or the "pulled in" clutch handle switch) directly to the small solenoid wire. The other small solenoid wire goes to ground. Power f...

I had 1 that got plugged a couple of times before I got all the material out, it was fibers from a cheapo oil filter. They deleted the cover all together on 1200s, you have to split the engine cases to get to it so don't complain.

what is the other cover, higher and to the right, with a solid plastic gasket behind it, almost directly behind the fuel pump. I need to know just before I may destroy it.
That is the cover over the final reduction gear. Not likely you will ever have to remove it.

If the lights don't go off when the starter button is pushed, it is not functioning properly or there is no power getting to the switch.
There are 2 switches in there operated by the same button, the headlight part has nothing to do with the starting part, 2 separate circuits.
