dreaded gl1200 speedo gear

Does anyone know will a speedometer gear from a gl1200 Interstate without the digital dash work with a digital dash? I'm not sure if the cable that connects to it with the screw is the same as one with a digital dash. As always thanks for your time and knowledge. Ed

Re: GL1200 Speed Sensor failures & repair

When you "pott" it putting it back together can you just use regular silicone to do that or does it have to be a certain kind? I have never done this before and was curious. I have read that you can just use regular silicone but better safe then sorry. I have it taken out and have de-potted it and I...

Re: GL1200 Speed Sensor failures & repair

First Merry Xmas and a blessed new year to everyone. In regards to this repair to the speed sensor unit I want to make sure I understand it completely. I am ordering a Omnipolar switch hall effect sensor ( the one I'm looking at is at 2.5v-28v output current 30mA) and a 6.8 k resistor. The resistor ...

Re: Suspension questions

Make sure that the Race Tech is for a PAIR. Most places that I looked at sold Race Tech as a single spring and not in PAIRS.

Re: Suspension questions

I did my 85 Limited Edition over the winter. I put progressive springs up front and used 15wt fork oil. The ride was just to rough for me with 15wt oil so I went back to ATF and it's much smoother. I also put progressive air shocks on the back. Wow what a difference in ride with the forks and the sh...

Re: Exhaust Removal

I just kept wiggling it and pulling on it and it finally came off. To put it back on you will need too loosen a header. I loosened the right header when i put it back on. You will need the 2 copper round washers for the header and then the 2 round things for b the exhaust where they go into the head...

Re: Swing Arm Play

I just replaced the bearings in mine and WOW what a difference it made in handling. I could have cleaned the original ones up and regreased them but new bearings are cheap and new compared to 32 yr old bearings. I went to a bike shop and got a Park tool fr-6 for like 10 bucks that worked for the lef...

First thanks for your service and sacrifice to this nation. I would just ditto what has been suggested. I would also suggest you reach out to the PGR (Patriot Guard Riders) in your area as they may have people that can help. I'm a PGR member here and have helped vets with their rides as well. Best o...

Re: Fork oil change

I would use ATF as well. I rebuilt my forks and such and put Progressive springs in and used 15wt fork oil, The ride was just to rough and harsh. I drained the 15wt and put in ATF and now she is smooth riding again.

Re: educate me on fork oil viscosity please

Gary, I didn't have beads in the previous tire. When I took the beads out I weighed them again and it was 2 oz. When I static balanced the tire it took zero weights. The tire to my surprise was perfectly balanced. It rides fine now except for the harsh to me ride. I'm changing the fork oil today. I ...

Re: educate me on fork oil viscosity please

Harvey they are progressive springs up front and they are the correct springs and they dont require spacers of any kind. It would appear that the fork oil may be the problem. I have read a lot of folks who went with progressive and used 15 wt oil that it was to rigid/rough of a ride. I'm going to ch...

Re: educate me on fork oil viscosity please

Virgin thanks for the reply. In regards to the balance beads I used them on my 81 with no problem. The bike rides fine now that there are no beads. Go figure. The ride is just a bit to firm. I'm going to try the lighter oil and see how it works. Thanks again for taking the time!

I finally have my 1985 gl1200 LTD sorted out. I have new swing arm bearings new tires and wheel bearings, steering head repacked with grease and adjusted. Have new progressive springs in front and progressive shocks (air) in the back. The ride up front is a bit bouncy I guess is the best way to desc...

Exhaust Removal

Can you remove just the pipes and baffle from where it connects with the 4 bolts (2 each side). I want to drop the swing arm and exhaust needs to come off. Can I just loosen the 4 bolts then remove from the header? I'm chasing this wobble thing and figured I would just start from scratch. I rebuilt ...

Re: Swing arm question

No everything went back together with no problems. I even took the front apart again and put it back together. Same result. It seems to ride ok until you hit 70 or so and that's when the problem starts. I thought I was a decent mechanic but this has me stumped. The rear tire is new and im wondering ...

Ernest thanks for the reply. I didn't do the wheel bearings as they appeared to be fine. It doesn't go ask over the place but it does seem to wander is the best way to explain it. I'm at a total lost with this thing. I may have to just put her up till I can get her in the shop and see what they say....

Swing arm question

Do you have to remove the swing arm in order to check the bearings and grease them? I have an issue at 70 or above where the bike is just not stable. It tends to want to move around a bit. I did all the following work to it over the winter and spring. I have rebuilt the front forks with progressive ...

Re: Steering bearing lose?

It was the steering bearing. I am just an idiot at times. I had it way too tight. I read inch pounds as ft pounds  . I adjusted the bearing and she rides great. I used Ride ON instead of balance beads and so far so good. Hit 90 and smooth as glass. I found this article which is helpful. http:/...
