Re: Picking up and Riding 800 miles

Glad you got home safe and this post is a little late.... but I disagree on the belt change. Your chances of the belt breaking on the way home are very very slim. Changing timing belts on anything is not a hurried job in a motel parking lot. For others in same situation. Check the bike over as close...

Re: Please tell who or what made you buy a Goldwing

pretty old post but I will jump in as well. Like most been riding since little kid.. Always behind the curve buying used because of hungry kids. In mid eighties the wife and I wanted to join a local touring club. Most had Goldwings. Our first was a 1976. Yes a old gl1000. That was fine until I saw a...

Re: Cruise Control, Do You Use It On The Highway?

My 94 cruise works fine but seldom use it. I find the weight of my hand on my 10.00 plastic throttle aid works every bit as well as the cruise. I depend on it so much when it broke on my last trip... I had to visit a shop to get another one. Now I keep a spare. I do use the cruise when I want to rel...

Re: Spark but no start

Quote " the bloody spare parts that have to come off this thing" Unquote Well fact of the matter.. none of the parts are "spare" Mother Honda wants all them to work together. As for loss of compression.. I just can't see that. All six? no way. I know you are busy with life.. but us retired guys that...

Re: Shortage in my headlights

My post was not exactly right.. the ignition system needs some current to light up those plugs. I am sure many have noticed their bike will crank and crank and not start.. until you let off the starter button and it starts. If your system... battery, starter, connections, etc are not close to perfec...

Re: Shortage in my headlights

Ok I got a smile from this one. "Shortage" to me means factory cannot supply item. You are on the right track with the start button. When that hungry starter starts to turn it requires current from every last corner of the bike including your iphone. The starter button activates a relay that makes s...

Re: Hint to help replacing your gl1500 alternator.

Another potential problem with this task. When I went to put in the new alternator.. it would not go. It would start in the dampener slots just fine but only if it was a quarter of a turn to far clockwise. After some head scratching.. it turns out the new alternator (yes its aftermarket) has a tall...

Re: Hint to help replacing your gl1500 alternator.

Ok...Nice to see 13 plus volts on my aftermarket voltage meter while going down the road. With my new AGM battery and new alternator, should have those troubles behind me for a while. Now it is up and going I am going to add brushes and a new terminal output bolt and have the used one for a spare. T...

I'll bite. What is it?
And about your "new" 94.. Mine is also a 94. It was wrecked and totaled at 55k. (I bought it in boxes) Now has 130k on it. They need some love along the way but will run and run.

Re: Changing Alternator on Wing

Jay I would think your exciter wire has been extended before as mentioned above. The original wire plugs into a vertical plastic holder with maybe 5 different plugs and it is located up high under the side shelter... Adding that connector would be both bad and good. Another place to lose continuity ...

Re: Changing Alternator on Wing

Well no handy tips.. so I did this. Eased the panel out just short of where it might break maybe six inches at bottom. Put a plastic cup in behind to hold it. Then used a good light and a small screwdriver to release the plug in question. removed the strain on the panel and waiting for new alternato...

Changing Alternator on Wing

One question about changing the alternator on my 94 gl1500. Is there a shortcut to getting to the green/black wire that goes from alternator up under the side shelter. (the plastic behind the reverse gear selector)?? I have had that off during the paint project years ago but really did not want to g...

It's the same bolt in question. Blade was my terminology. Number 15 on the microfiche diagram. Part number is 31115-MN5
-005. $9.20 on the Honda site I checked.

Hint to help replacing your gl1500 alternator.

Well I got 100k out of the stock alternator.... and 30k out of a aftermarket. Sounds about right. Brushes and a terminal output (more about that later) will fix it.. If you have done this job you will already know that many times the nut holding the large output wire spade.. is welded on with corros...

Custom Audio cables for J&M/GL1500

I have open face helmets with older style J&M audio headsets that clamp on the helmet and a one piece cord plugs in to the Goldwing. Din plug on the bike end and right angle 5 pin job on the helmets. Not sure of model numbers as mine are long ago worn off. Where can I buy matching plugs to build you...

Re: 1500 vs 1200

I have owned two gl1000's, one gl1100 and one gl1500. I have ridden many buddies gl1200s. In my opinion there is no comparison between the 1200 and 1500. I have also been told there is no comparison between the 1800 and the 1500. that is why I have never even test ridden a 1800. One note however. I ...

Re: New Member with question on fork seals

Not sure on the driver as I don't have. I was using a pvc coupler split in half and tapped in from above with a long extension and a helper. It gave me trouble so I just pulled the fork in question. Then used short length of pvc pipe to seat the bushing and seal (one at a time.. use plenty of oil at...

Re: New Member with question on fork seals

Since my seal replacement is only hours old (well ok a few days) I will chime in and tell you what I learned mainly from virgilmobile on this forum. 1. It took a impact wrench to remove the bolt in the bottom of the forks. Not because it was so tight but the spring inside wanted to turn. 2. Took the...

Re: New Member with question on fork seals

If all you are doing is replacing the seals and if you have air valves on the top of the forks.. you do not need to open up the springs at all.

Can be done on the bike but easier off the bike. Either way... springs do not need to come out.

Re: Replacing Fork Seal only 94 SE model

Ride first.. Puter later. Virgilmobile. Well I had some trouble seating the bushing so went ahead and just took the fork off. I did not like striking the pvc edge for fear of damaging the fork surface. I even tried a T coupler with a one inch t outlet. Thought I could bang on this rather than the ed...

Re: Replacing Fork Seal only 94 SE model

Virgilmobile.. Question. I finally got my lost parts and started the job. Ran into a problem removing the bottom bolt that holds the lowers to the fork tube. It just turns. I thought the spring tension would hold it for sure but does not seem to be the case. I have not been into those antidive syste...

Re: 89 gl1500 won't start

Yes, you're right. If the lifters were bled dry, all the valves would be closed tight. I still can't conceive of any situation that could result in all 12 valves sticking open at the same time, or all 12 lifters bleeding dry at the same instant (short of being entirely empty of oil). I think we're ...
