Bevel the piece and put in place, install the bolt in place to assure thread alignment and weld it up. Remove the bolt, let cool, run a tap into it, then reinstall. If your welder is any good at all, it will be better than new.
Agreed.

Re: 1800 does not want to downshift

Well, I took up your slack guys. I rode 150miles south to Milwaukie Oregon, for breakfast. And of course we rode a little over 150 on the way home. We just had to take some twisties. Just finished lunch at the Dairy Queen followed by a small blizzard. Tomorrow the weather promises to be even better ...

Have you dismantled things and taken a look at the shift lever mechanism? Maybe there is some binding there.

Re: Shinko-another tire thread

minimac, if you are happy with your current tire configuration, you may as well stay with it. No real need to re-invent the wheel.

As far as going back to a tire that had disappointed you in the past, that just does not seem wise.

The paint scheme says it is an SE. The adjustable passenger foot rests are an SE only option so that makes it an SE as well.

Re: Anyone in the Pacific Northwest? Need a rebuild kit

At least head gaskets are still available, unlike the valves. The part number for a 1981 Honda GL110 head gasket is 12251-MG9-306. They sell for less than $50.

You should probably address that question to the individual selling the rotor, not me.

I assumed that you had used Ebay in the past. You are familiar how Ebay works right?

Re: Relay wiring

The dimple/local hardware crimp tools do have a place, but I would relegate these to your tour kit as these do not take up a lot of space with the caveat that the repair be redone as soon as possible on return home. Cheers I have three or four of the dimple crimp style tools. They are handy for cut...

Re: Rear brake rotors

Personally, I'd find a rotor from a later model and use the later model mounting bracket to install the caliper. Why? They are more plentiful. All the 1990 through 2000 models used the same rotor.

Re: Installing final drive and shaft

This works on the GL1500. The GL1200 is probably very similar. To get the U-joint to align with the drive shaft, slide a piece 1/8" thick by 1" wide steel flat stock, or similar material, into the swing arm and slide it under the U-Joint to prop it up. Now slide the drive line only into the swing ar...

Re: SHINKO TIRES

One of my riding partners had a set of Shinko tires on his 2002 GL1800.
They failed in a similar manner to the Metzler tires talked about here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=37981

Needless to say, it keeps the rest of us away from them.

Re: New to me GL1500SE, so much good info here!

The biggest problem with a wheel lock is you will forget it is there and try to take off with it in place. It will do some damage and you will be kicking yourself. You will find that very very few Gold Wings are stolen. I have not heard of any stolen here in the Northwest but maybe I have a sheltere...

Re: Battery relocate to trunk??

I think you are just asking for headaches by relocating your battery to the trunk. What would someone gain by moving the battery? I don't understand why anyone would want to move it. The designated spot for the battery should be just fine. There is a nice little well for it to fit in, it is close to...

Re: Chicago to Tucson- fuel problems

After looking at and or replacing the fuel filter and the symptoms persist, you might take a look at the vacuum operated fuel petcock. It is just inside the fuel fill door. That little sucker can cause similar issues as having a fuel filter that is clogged. It can be bypassed as a trouble shooting m...
