Fuel Leak

Hello all. I'm looking for help. I have a 1989 GL1500 in very good condition. I presently have a fuel leak that I located after removing a lot of Tupperware to enable me to see the carburetors. Fuel is dripping from beneath the left rear (seat side) of the carburetor from the left end of the heat ri...

Re: How to renew your air compressor dessicant

Outstanding How To article as usual. I performed the service last night without a hitch using the old dessicant after baking it in the oven. I would like to add one tip, however. I tied a long piece of string to the end of the tire inflation hose before pulling it through from the right saddle bag. ...

Re: short in system

Okay. Thank you. The only reason I asked is that when I fill the fuel tank, the fuel gauge periodically does not indicate a full tank, but rather abut 7/8 full and it stocked there for a time until it finally indicates a full tank. I realize it may be a sending unit issue, but a short at a ground po...

Re: short in system

Do one of these ground points affect the fuel gauge operation? And are these ground points the same for a 1989 GL1500?

Re: What Model Year is my GL1500?

That makes the most sense. I replaced the alternator 2 days ago and all is right in the world again. It runs great. I also noticed that now when I turn the cruise control to on, the "cruise on" light immediately illuminates where before it took several seconds to light up. All of the lighting is a l...

Alternator Fastener Bolts Torque Specs

Does anyone know if there are torque specs for the alternator fastener bolts on a 1989 GL1500? Thanks.

Re: Alternator

I found out from Show Chrome today the driving lights draw only 8 amps so that amount is insignificant and the stock 40 amp alternator should handle that without a problem. My alternator just simply died. The bike has 74,000 plus miles on it and is 26 years old, so no surprise. My diagnoses determin...

Re: Alternator

Thanks Bluewaterhooker0! You were a big help and you clearly know what you are talking about. Check out my 2 posts WingAdmin featured in this month's newsletter. I was really honored. They have to do with the Show Chrome driving lights I installed when I replaced my timing belts and a petcock rebuil...

Re: Alternator

Thanks for the information fellows. It sounds like the problem is with the alternator. I think I'll just buy a new one and replace it. I'll tinker with the old one and check out your suggestions for sure and if it is a simple fix, I'll keep it as a spare or sell it cheap on eBay. Thanks again for th...

Re: What Model Year is my GL1500?

I don't see at least 12 v at either the large or small wire at the alternator with the engine at idle. I see 12.7 v at the battery and alternator large wire, 0 v at small wire with the ignition off. 11.6 v at the battery and alternator large wire and small wire with ignition on. 11.6 v at alternator...

Re: Alternator

Bluewaterhooker0. So if I don't see at least 12 v at either the large or small wire with the engine at idle, it's the alternator? Re: What Model Year is my GL1500?

Can someone also tell how to diagnose the problem so I am certain it is the alternator not charging. The battery is a Honda battery less than a year old that is always kept on a battery tender.

What Model Year is my GL1500?

I own what appears to be a 1989 Honda Goldwing. During recent repairs/maintenance I have performed, I am beginning to suspect I have a 1990 model. When I purchased the bike it was advertised as a 1989 model and titled as such. The VIN sticker near the radiator cap says it was manufactured "5/88" and...

Three weeks ago I installed a set of Show Chrome driving lights on my '89 GL 1500 (featured in the monthly newsletter if you missed it on my forum post at that time). Re: Petcock Valve and Fuel Line Clamps

Recently, I rebuilt the vacuum operated petcock valve located near the fuel filler cap. The diaphragms were degraded and the fuel shut-off diaphragm portion had 4 tiny holes in it allowing fuel to pass through and drain through the petcock check hole into the filler cap overflow tray (see diaphragm...

Re: Petcock Valve and Fuel Line Clamps

That's right, they are called spring clamps. I called them compression clamps. I couldn't think of the proper name. Thanks. And you're right FM-USA. It's all about Paying it Forward like this site does.

Show Chrome Driving Lights

Two weeks ago I replaced the timing belts on my '89 GL1500 with the help of the instructions in the "How-To Articles" section of this site. The instructions were outstanding and everything went well without a snag. Thank you! While I had it apart, I decided to install a set of Show Chrome Driving Li...

Re: 12v accessory outlet.

I just read this topic and I also installed two 12 volt accessory outlets on my 1989 gl1500 last summer, one in both the left and right faring pockets. Yes, there is enough room to install one in the right fairing pocket if you buy the right size. The short overall length of the brand I purchased al...

Re: Needed 1989 GL1500 Left Front Fender Cover Martini Beige Color

Thanks newday777 and NVSB4. I would prefer to try to find the right color in a used one. I also looked at the unpainted ones and worse case scenario if I can't find a used one I would go that route.
