Re: How to upgrade my headlight?

One other question. Isn't the halogen something like 50-60 watts?
Yes. I keep seeing 55 watts. So a 35 watt LED headlight would reduce the load on your charging system by 20 watts, at 14volts that is a reduction of 1.42 amps(ie 20w÷14v=current)

Re: How to upgrade my headlight?

I agree that a heat sink is better than a fan. I also like multiple COBs so that when one COB fails, you can still drive yourself home.

Also, im planning on installing some additional riding lights for when lighting is more important than the stereo.

Re: Timing belt noise

I've gotten to the point, after 19 years, that I can hear and feel when the viscosity in the oil is beginning to break down by that whine, and how the shifter feels to my boot. The whine gets louder, and I can feel the gears "clash" a little when I shift around the time the oil starts breaking down...

Re: Timing belt noise

When i pull in the clutch and rev it, i get no whine. The whine is only when i'm driving forward under torque. The whine is there while engine braking as well.

Does this help you guys?

Re: How to upgrade my headlight?

Sorry, i didnt fully explain my hidden agenda. In stop and go daytime traffic, i'd like to lighten the load with an LED headlamp so my bike better handles my stereo, then during night time rural runs i hope to flip a switch to have extra lights come on. They will be add ons, im not looking to compli...

How to upgrade my headlight?

I Did some of initial homework but need some help from the experts here. I learned that my headlight uses an 'H4' style of headlight. I'm finding LED replacements that are 30watt instead of the 55watt OEM bulb. The LED promises to be brighter and it will consume less power, thereby improving my char...

Re: Timing belt noise

I check the rollers for play and gritty feel but didnt lube them. I see now that was probably a mistake. I didnt make the rollers tighter than the spring, but the old belts felt/looked stretched. So yeah, compared to last year, it looks like a tighter, newer belt could be making more noise than im use...

Share some camping pictures new or old?

I love seeing people manage to fit their camping gear on their bike, pics that show a campsite where everything was packed onto 1 or 2 bikes, etc.

Please share pics of you set up, inventions, packed and unpacked gear. I know it will inspire me and pretty certain it will do the same witj others.

Timing belt noise

I changed my timing belts on my gl1100 this spring. The bike runs extremely well but now i have a high pitched timing belt whine that is very distracting as it drowns out some of the other noises from the engine. What causes belt noise? How would i determine if my belt noise is excessive? And is the...

Sanding between each layer of paint

What do you use for sand paper between each coat of paint? I've heard dozens of answers starting at 400 grit wet right down to rubbing compound. And so im totally confused.

What am i trying to achieve when i sand between coats? Is it possible to make the surface too smooth?

Re: Please tell who or what made you buy a Goldwing

My gl1100 interstate was only $2000 and it matches my personality. Im the kind of person that is happy with a pick up truck or an old luxury car. The gl1100 is a bit of both. It doesnt have to shine and it doesnt have to be the best performer. Meanwhile, it is reasonably reliable, shows well, and pr...

Re: Countersteering: Watch this and save your life

Fair enough. I appreciate the reply. I've been riding motorcycles since i was 10 yrs old. In my younger years i always drove at the edge of my ability on a motorcross track so i guess that might have enforced an intuitive riding style however no doubt i definitely had to practise and learn new skill...

Re: Countersteering: Watch this and save your life

How do you train something that is already an instinct? Ì'd be afraid of making myself less of a driver.

This happens to me on a pool table, whenever i use my knowledge of angles, it makes me play less intuitively which causes me more error.

Re: What's a fair price for fully restored 1976 GL1000 LTD?

I sold a 99 harley sportster in 2007. I asked original retail price plus 50 percent of all harley aftermarket parts. Tuned it up and polished it. And, it sold in 1 weekend. I think you could take a similar approach. Maybe ask typical market value plus 50 percent of all significant restorations? If y...

Side panel projeect for wall

Hi Everyone. I have an extra side panel from a GL1100 parts bike. I'd like to give it a nice paint job and hang it on my wall. My goal is to learn how to apply each layer of paint and clear coat and learn how to make the finish shine so well that an experienced paint pro can not find fault with it. ...

Re: Weak electrical system

Ok, i think i can answer my own question. Yes, it will give me an extra 2 amps to boil the battery... But it will also mean that at an idle my system will be loaded with 2 amps less than it is now. And, if im lucky, that 2 amp difference might tip the scales in my favor so there is no problem. This ...

Re: Weak electrical system

Thanks for some good advice. I definitely will remove the connector and test the battery. The battery is new but i shouldnt assume that it is good. My stereo is installed on a masterswitch. And ive cut the power wires to the stock clock. I was thinking of installing LED headlamps and tailights but w...

Weak electrical system

If i run my stereo- 1/2 VOLUME - in stop and go traffic, in about 30 minutes I start to get a weak battery. The battery voltage stays down around the 12V range. With higher revs, it takes me about another 30 minutes to see 14.4 volts on my gauge. What are my options? Last year, i inspected the 3wire...

Re: voltage regulator rectifier concern

Well ideally the regulator is already "smart" - it adjusts the bus voltage via shunting stator current, based on the voltage it sees on the bus. If it sees voltage is too low, either because it IS low, or because old wires/connections are artificially lowering it, it's going to raise the voltage. S...

Re: voltage regulator rectifier concern

That's a little bit high, yeah. You're going to end up boiling away battery electrolyte with those voltages. Before you start replacing anything, do three things: 1. Check the ground (green) wires between the rectifier and the battery negative terminal. If there is resistance there, it can make the...
