New to the Wing

Post by Ghostt » Wed Jan 17, 2018 5:46 pm

I'd like to start with saying hello, as I'm new to the forum, as I've just picked up my first GW about 2 months ago.

A little bit of backstory in me, I've been riding about 40 years, mostly sport bikes, some standards, dirt bikes,etc... But never a cruiser, bagger etc.... About 2 months ago a friend of mine stopped by with his 84 Aspencade with only 32k miles, and he was thinking of selling it, I asked him how much, and I'll ask around for him. He quoted me a price but said if I wanted it he'd cut me great price in it. I said its not my style of bike, but thanks for the great price.

I thought about it that night and did my research on the bike, as I know the current owner and I also know the previous owner as well, so I know it's been a garage queen fit sure. He did the oil and filter, New tires, New battery at the start of the season, but he didn't ride it much, maybe 500 miles at best.

So I called him a few days later, and I was still on the fence about it, he said I could borrow it for the day, and take it out for a long test drive. So I did about 200 miles worth, and I fell in love with this bike, and now I've added it to my stable.

It's has a few small things wrong with it, but no major issues, as I spent the last couple of months riding it, as I needed to get comfortable with it.

Glad I took the chance.

LoL I'm that way with all my bikes. So far I've replaced the speakers, that were not only blown but mismatched, and wired all messed up.

I replaced them with Polk Audio DB+ 4" (DB402) which I got for new crazy cheap

I've also fixed a few small things, one of which was the so-called screws in the clutch and brake covers. I replaced them with titanium ones

Installed Gammatronix 12V LED battery level/charge monitor(L) and a Ice Warning LED indicator alarm/low temperature(R) and a Kruzer Kaddy in black.

Added an LED headlight bulb, along with replacing the other ones as well.

I enjoy modifying the most and adding making it my bike.

Stay tuned for more to come.

That's a beautiful old bike. I hope you have a great time and are able to put many miles on it

I've only been here a few months myself and bought my Wing this past July. I had a LOT of fun on my last bike, a Hayabusa, but sorta wished I'd gotten a Wing instead now.

Well well, looks like you are already addicted.....good for you. Keep playing, it will only add a goofy smile on your face, of course different than the other rides you have had. I came from Cruiser background then flipped to touring and will probably never look back (unless I can add to my stable which I already received permission from the better half).

I'm sure I will add more, I also added a bigger windscreen, as I'm a tall person I needed to taller windscreen.

It's a slipstreamer model I got it for $50 barely used, looked new and it definitely helps.

On the list is heated grips, as I put them on all my bikes.

I'm also looking into a MOSFET upgrade to the R/R, I've done this on my other bikes too and maybe a CoPs conversation as well.

As far as the saddle goes, what are the popular choices out there? What about adding a backrest?

Also what maintenance items should I put on the list, timing belts? Etc????

Thanks

The term "Cops" got me to looking for what it is:

https://honda-tech.com/forums/forced-in ... n-1344468/

That article describes using it on a bunch of stuff, and how it is standard on modern automobiles today.
He also talks about how the motorcycle industry used it long before car manufacturers did.

Parts List:

-Engine Management System (AEM, MoTec, or any other EMS with multiple coil outputs.)

-Ignition Amplifier (AEM C2Di, MSD DIS 2, MSD DIS 4, etc)

-Coils (MSD Blaster Coils, Honda Motorcycle Coils, LS1 Coils, Marine Coils, etc)

I've done the CoPs (Coil over Plugs) conversation on my Ninja 250 & both 500s, along with running NGK iridium plugs.

I've done a write up on the CoPs and posted to both the Ninjette.org and EX-500.com forums which I'm a senior member of both.

The CoPs offer a stronger spark, does away with the spark plug caps and HT leads, etc... This eliminates things that can go wrong, and cleans up the top of the engine in the ninjas.

With the better/stronger spark, it allows you to open the spark plug gap a bit more to take advantage of the hotter coils. I've run this set up for many seasons with no ill effects.

I will have to do some research on doing to wing.

More personal touches added.

I found a pair of front turn signals with the "vent " looks dirt cheap, but the chrome was badly worn which is perfect for my needs.

Once I got them I decided to prep them and paint them satin black to match the front vents.

I prefer the blacked out look, as it goes with the color scheme of the bike and the color which is Pearl Siren Blue paint code PB123PA.
