I'd been on a ride one winter around the Gulf Coast, which was beautiful. The last morning, coming home, it was 0 F when I left the motel. Had on a heated vest, gloves, and socks with chaps though. Also a full face helmet with an insulated pull-over for face & neck. I was fairly comfortable. I don't do it on purpose, unless I just need to get somewhere because it is so much trouble to get dressed and to stop in restaurants etc. with all that gear on.

Took the bike down to Mercer Island and back on a service call this morning, about 80 miles round trip. It was a couple degrees below freezing but the roads were dry. I layered up pretty good and was cozy but my hands were starting to get pretty cold toward the end there. I discovered that when at stoplights if I lean down and put my gloved hands on the valve covers it warms them back up in short order :D
I can remember doing this on my GSXR-750. I'd ride when it was so cold it was almost snowing, and my fingers would get so cold I couldn't feel them, or properly operate the clutch or brake. I would shove one hand down into the (air-cooled) engine until I could start to feel my fingers, then would switch hands. Not a pleasant way to ride.

Up until the last couple years if the sun was shining I could ride. Rode to work when it was 18F is the lowest I've ever ridden in. Age is making me feel the cold worse than it used to.

Although I've ridden colder than I really should, now I won't ride if it's below 20*-25*.I can dress for those temps without too much trouble

My new low is 30F last weekend. I was determined to ride to meet some friends for breakfast and knew the temp was going to drop. They were all betting that I would not show up on the bike. They all lost. I also tested out my ABS, intentionally, and it works great.

Back in '85 I was riding my GS1100E back from San Diego to Dallas and makign the switch from I-10 to I-20 the temp dropped from around 40 to around 25 when I came out of whatever valley and ended up stopping every so often to put my heavy winter glove covered hand right behind both exhausts to thaw out before moving on. I made it Pecos before calling it a night around 2300. I loaded back up the next day to continue on, but ended up stopping in Midland because the snow was starting to stick to the highway. My dad and brother came out with a trailer to pick me up and bring me the rest of the way home. They couldn't believe I made it that far.

This coming Monday the low is supposed to get down to 16°F, if the roads are dry I may just have to go out for a ride to break my personal record 8-)
Winging it every chance I get :)

I just ain't the man I used to be.

When I lived up in Grouse Creek, Utah and the temps were at minus 59 degrees, I just put on two pair of wool socks, my felt liners and then my jumbo galoshes....

warm underliners, jeans, and two pair of insulated coveralls.

felt gloves, and then insulated gloves, and then if I could bend over far enough, I would prop off the airplane and go flying.... but, if that airplane did not have an electric heater tied up snug to the underside of the engine, and a thick furniture blanket tied securely all around the engine housing, you could NOT turn that prop over.... the oil was frozen....

not today, if it is below about 70* this ole guy ain't going any more.
at 70* and 70 mph, the wind index is down there low enough that I feel very chilly... around 55* or so...

no thank you.

Went out on the Guzzi yesterday, it was 32 degrees, the only heated gear I had was my gloves. Needless to say it was a quick 30 minute ride.

Cold weather and emphysema don't get along together - found out last week that my persistent cough and shortness of breath is in fact a mild case of emphysema - and I'm a non-smoker!
