Spam kill

Postby WingAdmin » Tue Feb 14, 2012 8:18 pm

I've been getting tired of the spam flowing in here lately - it's not something easily killed, because it's not "spam bots" anymore. It's actual people, hired by spammers to register and post spam on popular forums, to get their links out there. Every morning I sit down to clear out the garbage that they have posted overnight. If I'm away for a couple days, it grows.

So this afternoon I did an analysis of the countries that most (95%) of the spam originates from. Those countries are China, India, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Russia and Philippines. Looking at the user logs, we have very few users from any of those countries, and NO active users. So I took a couple hours and wrote a filter that identifies users from those countries and blocks them from using the forum - reading or posting.

Hopefully that will stem the spam flow - I expect that it will. If you're from one of those countries - sorry about your bad luck, but you won't be reading this message anyway. :)

I was wondering if that was happening. I noticed a few postings that seemed more like ads. Good job on the filter. Hope it works. Guess we'll have to report them when we see them.

I know the feeling I'm a super moderator on a GW Forum and I catch and ban them, I pass their IP over to the forum administrator and he bans the IP. They can be a real P.I.T.A. A group effort cleaned the data base of 40 pages of spammers last year, we'd get about 10 a night and maybe one actual Wing owner and now its a trickle. They come from the very places you mention and we've even had some from the U.S. try. I just use the symbol on the top of the post and its done.

That's how I've been doing it all along - when I see them, I blow their message away, I blow their account away, and ban their email address and IP address. But by then it's usually too late, they've come and dumped their crap, and disappeared.

Now by blocking entire countries by network masks, I'm effectively banning a couple million IP addresses, without having to put them in. The trick was to get the system to do it in a way that was fast enough that it would identify any of those addresses, but not slow the system down at all. It took a bit of work, but I came up with an idea that worked.

Thanks for all the time and effort you put into this site. The more I have my Wing and work on it, the more I appreciate all you have done here. I never even realized the tedious matters you have to deal with to keep the site up and running efficiently. Cudos!

Also......look at littlebeaver's "NEW" ride in his picture....he got the paint job done and it looks nice.

Actually, the people here are fantastic. In all the time I've run this site, I've never once deleted or even had to warn a (genuine Wing owner) user because of their actions. I've never even deleted a user's post (other than spam, of course)! Only the spammers have been trouble.

Well, it's been five days since I put this "feature" into place, and instead of the normal 4-5 a day, I've had a total of: zero. Not a single one in the past five days. I guess we'll call that a success. :)

Thanx for all the hard work you do so we can enjoy this site without all that spam, just one of the behind the scenes jobs that seldom gets recognition.

I was an Administrator on a forum that was getting up to 30 or 35 of these spammers a day. We had numbered 13,800 members. I took it on as a job to sort them out, and it took hours a day for five months. I got our membership down to about 4200 bonafide members. I wish I had your software writing skills. I could have done it three years ago before it got out of hand.

Thanks for all you do here. It is not easy being green -

I administer an email server with about 150 domains on it, several thousand users. More than 85% of the mail volume that comes into my server is spam. That's many thousands of messages a day. We trap most of it. I have a lot higher power server just to run the very complex spam filters required. That costs money. I spend hours a week tuning and adjusting the spam filters, to deal with the ever-changing tactics the spammers use. I'm not alone - there are thousands of mail server admins just like me doing the same thing. You don't have to tell me what I think should happen to spammers. :)

I gotta agree with everyone else. Great Job WingAdmin...I have given up on email and spam...I do my daily dump...It takes me about 1 min to scan all the incoming emails... I read the 1 or two that are actually sent to me by someone I know...then I "check all" and hit the delete button. The majority seems to be generated or my address sold by google. I notice that my spam pretty much tracks my search engine activity...Of course not all of it. I don't remember joining 40 or 50 different dating sites hehe. I also make it a point never to do business with any business I see supported by spam. Computers have become too smart, software writers to invasive and have removed 100% of our privacy on computers.
