GPS sunshield?

Postby yechave » Wed Apr 18, 2012 6:19 pm

Does anyone offer a hard sunshield to surround the Honda Nav / GPS? I saw one offered in a You Tube advertisement a few weeks ago, didn't look too well made however.

It was overcast today, even with polarized shades, I could not see the Nav screen. That was just sitting here at the house trying to enter some info.

Thanks!

I've been using this product for years: Glare Stomper GPS shield - it works extremely well.

That said...LCD screens work by polarizing light. If you look at them through polarized glasses, it can make them difficult (or impossible) to see.

Thanks!

I had checked that out last night. I need one that just clips inside the onboard Nav screen for the 1800.

Should be one commercially available, I would think.

I know some GL1800 owners have used this Glarestomper, by putting the velcro around the inside of the screen bezel.

I remember seeing a custom GL1800 GPS sun visor that someone was making - it wasn't cheap, but it looked quite good. The guy also made similar things for the dash. I've spent a few minutes searching around the web for it, but haven't been able to find it again. Perhaps someone else can remember?

I have seen one on ebay. It was not exceedingly expensive, made of black plastic, bent to fit around the NAVI unit, and two sided taped in place. One could make one if one was at all handy. I looked on ebay when I read this, but could not find it, sorry. Perhaps they did not sell well.

I made one for the BMW LT three years ago. Worked great and probably the best material I've seen so far.

I used the inside of a Wegman's grocery bag. It was a black, semi hard plastic that was easily cut and molded. Did a great job. I would have to travel some to get another, if they still have them. Cost was under $1.50.

I did make another type of sunshade earlier today after calling around and checking all the options on Ebay and Amazon. Have not had a chance to take it out and see how it works. Will update when I feel better.

Here is a shade I made this afternoon. The pics are in yechave's forum pics album. Not sure how to connect them to this thread.

It looks good. I tried it with the lights set below 50% on the dimmer.

I used a discarded medical boot that was in pieces. Using the fabric from the shoe portion, you can see the rest is pretty beat up, I cut enough for the shade leaving just enough on the outside edge to run a bike wheel spoke through to support the frame outline I wanted.

The material is perfect for sticking to velcro, and it takes up much less space inside the screen if you had to use velcro on two sides for the install, and used a different material which could be thicker.

You could roll this up if you wanted to.

I put a strip of velcro on the inside of the Nav screen. Pushed the material up tight to the top section, then the sides. You can almost see the entire screen while driving.

I thought wind might be an issue, but it didn't budge at 60. Maybe 80+ with crosswinds and trucks..not sure.

You can use either side, gray or black. If this had been new material, you would not have any issues with the creases. For $2, I am pleased!

Thanks for pasting the pics!

I am not feeling well today or I would have cleaned up the material with duct tape and taken a little more time.

It does look like it belongs on the bike, and serves the purpose.

Here is another possible option I was considering:

This may be the one mentioned. Search on ebay for item # 200750761734.
I bought one a few weeks ago and like it very much. It's held in place by velcro and has a nice finished appearance.

WOW! That is the one I was looking for. An excellent find and it does not impede your view of the Nav screen.

Certainly better than my $2 cover, which works fine, but looks a whole lot nicer. I am able to put coins and money on the top of mine, or other items (sun glasses) that would slide off the pro unit.

I may just have to buy one of those.

THANKS!

I finally had some change to buy the Nav sunshade. Very nice indeed!

Be pretty hard to come up with a better product.

Still being advertised on Ebay.

I use glarestompper and I love it. It's worth every penny they charge for it.

Regarding the ad for the Olympia Nova vest on this page, I just ordered that from Revzilla.com. Found I had a $13 credit on my account from a couple of years ago. Best price I could find anywhere. Great company to deal with as well.

The sunshade was fantastic today. I sweltering 90+ degrees with plenty of sun.
