82 Aspy back up and running

Postby WingAdmin » Sun Apr 22, 2012 1:10 pm

Well I found a rear rotor for my 82 Aspencade on eBay at the beginning of the week, at a decent price. I crossed my fingers that it would be in as good condition as described, and I wasn't disappointed. It arrived on Friday, I miced it out and it's just barely under the minimum width (.33 ") - being that my old destroyed rotor was down to .28", I'm pretty happy with that. I pulled the old rotor off and put the new one on. I pulled the caliper off and discovered my problem - one of the pistons was seized. It was pushed out with hydraulic pressure, but was not retracting. It had worn the one side of both pads right to the metal.

I had a spare rear caliper rebuild kit, so I pulled the caliper apart and cleaned it all up. The seizure had been caused by some accumulation of dirt on the cylinder wall. Once I cleaned that up and cleaned out the seal grooves, the pistons fit perfectly. I polished up the pistons just for good measure, put the new seals in, and put it all back together - and it now works great.

I also pulled my voltage regulator off and installed the voltage regulator sense bypass relay that littlebeaver put on his bike. When I measured, there was a 0.95v drop on the sense line coming from the ignition compared to the battery positive terminal. That's quite a drop. With the relay in place, the bike now charges at a perfect 13.8 volts instead of the 14.7 volts it used to run at. I should have done that a long time ago.

I then took it out for a ride. Now that I'm used to riding my 1500 ALL the time, it was an eye opener riding my 1100 again. It obviously weighs less, it's more nimble, but the massive torque of the 1500 just isn't there. However, the 1100 shifts so much more smoothly than my 1500, the 1500's transmission is quite clunky in comparison. But the HUGE difference is the brakes. The brakes on my 1100 are SO sharp and powerful, they make my 1500's brakes feel spongy and weak in comparison. That's 100% down to the stainless brake lines I put on my 1100...so I made the decision to put that upgrade on my 1500's "to do" list.

I made one other decision. My 1100 is sad - it is sitting in the garage, not getting ridden. I had always intended to keep my 1100 when I bought my 1500...but it needs to be ridden, and that's not happening. Every time I go out, I pick the 1500 to ride. So I've decided that I'm going to let my 1100 go to a new home. I'll likely write an ad up in the next day or two when I get some time. It pains me so much to do this, because I've done SO much work to it, and I've gone SO many places on it, it's got SO many memories for me. But I think it would be better off being ridden all the time by someone who loves it, than just sitting in my garage collecting dust.

Sorry that you have to let her go, Im in the same boat with my 1200 aspy its just setting in the garage. I had my son ride it the other day just to get her out for a while. I hate to let her go to as she was my first GoldWing but I still have my other 1200 aspy as my son rides it all the time. Hope all works out for the both of us. Hal

I feel for you , Im in the same boat. Been so busy playing with the new 1500 that I havent even finished putting the 1100 back together yet. I am sure that I will have to give it one last ride before putting the 1100 up for sale. That will be a sad day around here.

I too am in the same situation. Since I got the 1800 my 83 Yamaha Venture Royal is just sitting, and it needs to be rode. The wife won't get back on the yamaha after the 1800, and with insurance costs the way they are here I can't justify/afford two bikes. I will have to find the yamaha a new home even though it pains me..........funny how we get attached to these bikes?????? :( :(

Try having to ride three bikes .My two wings and the wifes Virago to keep then in a running order . Each bike has some thing i like about it . But yeah it might be time to let the naked wing go maybe .

I've got the same situation - two Goldwings, and my wife's Virago. :)

Naw, not sold yet, haven't really publicized it yet.

I just figured, it's a shame to have it sitting in my garage, it really needs someone who will love it and ride it all the time.

Wow! I wish it was a year ago when I was looking for a Goldwing. I like the one I've got....real nice and now even better after many of the upgrades mentioned on this site, but your bike is like famous. It is also like basically getting a new wing for $3K which is a bargain in my opinion.

I'm with Beave.....I'm wishing you weren't selling it, but if you are certain you want to, then best of luck to you on the sale. Someone is getting a great deal!!

Yeh, it's busting up my Heart pretty good to see you get rid of it, I wish I didn't sell my 750 kawa Ltd, it was awesome, but I had to sell it because our first baby was coming and it was but a toy, and we needed baby stuff. Then I sold my Yamaha XS 1100 and I wish I never sold it but it would get blazing hot in the summer months sitting in traffic.. I had to sell my Nomad because my daughter went off to college and we needed the extra funds for that, also I found myself enjoying the Goldwing better, it was also much better on gas..that 1500 just made me mad because I found myself filling the tank to quickly on trips..My 1100 goes way further on a tank of fuel..But yes it pains me to see you sell it....But do as your thoughts tell you, because everything happens for a reason...

Are you 100% sure. :( But then we're all happy for what she has taught us all. :D :D

i'm happy you got a 1500 wing, i'm happy you got the1100 wings brakes sorted out and the machine is back on the road but it saddens me to know that you are going to sell it. my plan for this year is to give my niece the cb450sc and ride the 750f and 1200 wing the most and do all long distance trips on the 1500 wing. only three bikes to maintain? i'll have five with the sunL

It is a beautiful bike and well worth the money you are asking for it.I can understand how you feel after all the time and money you put into maintaining it. Who ever buys it will not only be getting a great deal, but a bike that will last many years.

There is so much stuff you can still do with it...What does the wife say about selling it...I'll tell exactly what she said...Are you sure you want to do that.?. For 3k I'm thinking hard here but I have a awesome bike right now and I don't really need two  , well ok I see your point..Sell it... You will get no more grief from me only blessings from now on...

Boy am I glad I don't have any money to buy a newer bike after reading these stories. And the comparison 1100 vs the 1500.... I guess I'm stuck with my only bike the 1100 A 1982. At least I will not have to cry seeing it leave the garage
I'm in the process of installing LED lights on the rear fenders of the extra wheel kit I installed last year.

Wingman,

If it hasn't been sold yet I am going to forward this to my daughter, and her husband over in Middlefield. They ride a sport bike now but have been dreaming about a Goldwing ever since they came down for their wedding, and my daughter rode mine. That is a beautiful machine. If I didn't already have one I would be jumping on it. Especially the way you have gone through the whole thing. I'm sorry that you have to sell it, and I like the caveat about parting it out. That would be insane anyway.

Well, my 1100 is gone to its new owner. He picked it up on Saturday, and boy was he excited. He had a Silverwing that he just sold, and really wanted a GL1100. He said when he saw mine, he knew that was the one he wanted. He called and said he'd be over with the cash, sight unseen.

I talked him through all the features and things on it, we did the paperwork, and he was off. I got a call from him today, he says he LOVES it, and did 170 miles on it over the weekend. I'm sad to see it go...but it's good to know that it's being ridden by someone who loves it and will give it a good home.
