Harkgold's restored 84 GL1200 Interstate

Postby harkgold » Tue Jun 19, 2012 9:00 pm

Well it's finally done and I'm going to attempt to attach some photos so you can see what all the fuss was about for the last seven months.
I wish to thank everyone for all your help in helping me struggle through this project. I appreciate your patience in walking me through my seemingly endless line of questions.
All the bugs have been worked out of the bike, the carbs have been synched and wow does the bike perform beautifully. It shifts and purrrrrrs as smooth as glass.
A couple years ago, (when my bike was a '78 GS750 Suzuki), which my wife hated to ride for any more than twenty minutes; we were sitting on the patio one beautiful evening and a guy and his wife rode into our quiet neighborhood on a gorgeous brand new yellow Gold Wing. My wife said quietly to herself out loud "Wow, wouldn't it be nice to own one of those". Hearing her I responded by saying "yea right.....dream on.....your looking at probably a $18 to $20,000.00 machine there....there is no way we will ever own a Gold Wing", I told her. We've heard people say to "never say never". It was only a couple of years later that a friend of mine approached me asking me if I wanted another motorcycle restoration project to work on. And he went on to tell me that if I came and drug it out of his barn that I could just have it. Remembering what my wife said a couple of years earlier I thought I would at least check it out to see if it were something that I thought had potential of being a nice bike. Well here we are seven months later. It's not a new Gold Wing.....but at least it's a Gold Wing.....and the price was right.
Best thing is my wife loves it! Well......and I do to. It's a blast to ride.
Thanks again!!!
Harkgold. :D

Beautiful. Looks like all your hard work payed off. I know from personal experience how great it is to finally have a bike that my wife really enjoys riding as much as I do. I hope you, and yours have many happy, and safe miles. :)

Thanks for all of your nice comments everyone. My wife loves the bike and she is always looking for reasons to go some where. Compared to the GS Suzuki this bike is so comfortable that we can ride this bike all day with fewer stop breaks.
Burgundy colored bikes were never really my favorite color for motorcycles, but this Wineberry metal flake color is kind of unique and I'm beginning to really like it. The sunlight has a way of creating a wide array of various color hues in the paint that is quite beautiful.
The guy that gave me the bike never did see the bike during its restoration period and he had a hard time believing it was the same bike when he saw it for the first time after its completion.
Thanks again!!!

Thanks Gary!
Actually, all I did on the paint work is clean all the dirt and grime off with two or three thorough washings, then I hand rubbed out the paint with just regular body rubbing compound and water, and then two coats of McGuires NXT Generation Polymer wax. This really brought the paint back to life.
