My 4th GL

Postby Mac_Musick » Sun Jul 08, 2012 8:32 pm

This one I picked up at Clearlake CA this past July 4th. A GL 1200 Aspy that needs some work to run and look good. My current other is a 1980 110O that I fondly named "Packrat".

The new bike I will restore as original. I believe I'll name it Quicksilver Messenger after a band I enjoyed in the late 60s. I am 67 years old. I live and work in Mancos CO.

See our website www.basinmotorcycleworks.com

I will post some pix when I figure out how.

Thanks to the Admin and other site members for sharin great stories and info about the bikes we all like so much. Mac from Mancos

It has been a long time since I last posted here. I sold "Packrat" just last Saturday. Last winter I pulled the heads and discovered badly rusted valves and rust pitted cylinders. I pointed this out to the buyer and he said "no problem". Whew I was in over my head.

I have gotten the 1985 Interstate running. It required an after market fuel pump, a carb cleaning and oh yeah I cleaned the fuel tank with the Works toilet bowl cleaner. I still intend to change the timing belts and flush the raditor before an extended test ride. A short ride recently resulted in my left boot becoming oil soaked as oil is leaking from the shifter shaft seal. I'll fix that tomorrow.

Meanwhile I sold my 1982 1100 standard. I bought a very nice 1984 Nighthawk 650 that runs well and looks great.

We are still enjoying our 2nd winter here in SW CO (snow in April and possibly May). I'll have the 85I dialed in by the time it warms up around here.

How'd that tank turn out with the toilet bowl cleaner?

The Works disolves rust. I removed the tank, poured in two bottles of the toilet bowl cleaner and two dozen bolts. I closed the petcock, put the gas cap on and rolled the tank around every few minutes. After about 20 minutes I poured out the rusty sludge and shook out the bolts. I had very hot water to rinse the tank. Really flushed it for several minutes? Then I fogged inside the tank with WD40. Replaced the gas cap. After I reinstalled the tank I put in three gallons of gas and 6oz. of Seafoam.

It was after the tank was installed that I discovered my bad fuel pump. So I sloshed the fuel around by rocking the bike. I was able to start the engine on starter fluid and able to run it on a tube and funnel for gas. It ran rough.

I cleaned the carbs. Reinstalled the carbs and it ran pretty well in the I.V. Went to Autozone and bought an electric fuel pump. When I got everything hooked up correctly it started right up and ran well.
