Spam slam

Postby WingAdmin » Thu Aug 30, 2012 8:46 am

Wow...I upgraded the forum software yesterday, and within six hours, we got slammed by spammers - one of them posting over 30 messages. I have cleared out all the crap now, but I don't know if there is some new inherent weakness in the upgrade, or if it's just coincidence. I'll keep a close eye on it in any case.

The pests seem to be a little bit active for some reason.
Over on a new Wing forum I'm a moderator on, they get caught in 'The Stop Forum Spam' software section on the Admin panel and then they get toasted, a majority of these creeps have very dirty IPs and e-mails.

Ever since I upgraded the forum software. I can't think that's not a coincidence. I've been meaning to add that functionality into the site, looks like it's time.

They really have been obnoxious this weekend - before the upgrade I might have had one or two a week to kill off. This past weekend I have deleted almost 50 spammer accounts, and hundreds of spam messages. What a waste of my time.

I've just written some new code into the registration process that should hopefully cut this off at the knees. I'll watch over the next couple days and see if it's had any effect and go from there.

I'm going to call this a success! In the past 24 hours since I implemented this new code, there hasn't been a single new spammer registration, and zero spam messages posted. I set it up to notify me whenever it blocks a spammer from registering, and I got seven such notifications - which means it is doing exactly what it's supposed to do.

Congratulations, maybe you need to change your job and set up a professional company to market your approach??
