New bike in the garage!

Postby WingAdmin » Sat Sep 01, 2012 6:08 pm

I picked up my wife's new bike last night: a 1989 Pacific Coast. She is absolutely thrilled with it...and VERY anxious for me to do the lowering on it so that she can ride it! I need to lower the suspension by about 1/2" and the seat probably another inch in order for her to safely ride it. It's not stopping her from sitting on it and making "vroom vroom" noises in the meantime....

Anyone in the market for a 250 Virago? Great starter bike, it's what my wife used to learn to ride on.

Congrats to the Mrs. she looks happy with her 'Baby' Wing.

It looks like its in great shape! Grats to you and her.

I see there's a union sticker (IAFF) on it. What gives with that? Are you a FF or did you get it from one?

I know that you are going to be doing things to it, so take notes and pictures. For some strange reason I like the PC800. There is one of the professor at school that has a gray one, he shown me a lots about it. Thought it would be nice to run around town with, and make folks think I and riding around a space machince. Looks good. hope it run out ok.

I'm starting to see mor of those around here now. I chaulk it up to the currant economic situation and gas prices bringing them out of hiding, storage or what ever. A lot more vintage bikes are popping up as well.Too bad it's under such dyer circumstances that people realize bikes can and usually are cheaper to run then cages. Oh well! Keep yer knees in the breeze all! :D

That's a perfect choice, 800 cc's and I bet it moves, she going to love it, smooth as silk, oh man, I remember when my wife was talking about riding years ago we talked about one of those...Really good choice, I forgot all about that choice when you were asking for advice on bikes for her...She's going to throw rocks at that little 250 now..still that was a great bike to learn on...I'm so happy for both of you guy's.... :D

It's not his bike.
I'm sure you meant to ask if she's a fire fighter, or bought it from one. 8-)

I stand corrected :)

My wife's car has a union sticker on it. I just got her a pink one a week or two ago.

Wingadmin, how tall is your wife? Mine is 5'1" and wants a full faired bike like my wing. However the wing is too tall and heavy for her, just wondering if the PC800 would be an option? Depends on the seat height? Your wife looks taller than mine, but thought I would ask.

Definitely going to do this - her current boots don't have that thick a sole, and that's far cheaper than modifying the bike! Plus...I don't have to tell her twice to go buy new shoes (ok, boots)! :)

The guy I bought it from is a retired (78 years old) FF. He's been retired 18 years, but you'd never know it, it was obviously his life. He's a confirmed bachelor (he says, "I got rid of my wife 37 years ago. Who needs 'em!") He loves telling stories of all the things he saw, and every vehicle he owns (car and 3 bikes) are covered in FF/EMT stickers and license plate brackets. :)

I definitely will. I don't know if this is the place to post them though...perhaps I should start a new web site? :)

They were definitely sold in Canada, but in very small numbers. 25K on it, not bad for a 1989.

My wife is just barely 5'3", but it's her inseam that causes the problems, she's got a 28" inseam, so virtually every bike is too tall for her. She can touch both feet on the ground with this bike, but she's on her toes. I can get an inch or so out of the suspension, and probably a good inch and a half out of the seat, so with decent soled boots, she should do fine.

If my memory is correct I think these were only sold in the west as it had to do with Air care but I do know that they were sold in Canada.
Scott I know that you already have the bike so this may be a moot point, but the V-Star of all engine sizes have a 27.2" seat hieght & are super easy to lower. As it only take putting shorter shocks on the rear & this doesn't effect the ride @ all. I know cause I had a Virago that was lowered 3". http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/pro ... /home.aspx But that is a beautifl bike in itself. Good luck with thr alterations. Cheers Angela :D :D :D

Hi Angela,

A Virago is what she has now and she finds the forward controls really uncomfortable, because of the way it makes you sit. She really wanted a bike that had an upright seating position, which is what led us to this bike.

Congrats on the new bike for your wife, looks great! With the two of you riding down the road in white should be an eye-catching site! Wouldn't mind if you posted the alterations on this site, making it easier to follow along.

Gary - check Craigslist, there was a nice PC800 in Lynnwood at a Dealer for $2k, looked really clean. Also, I believe there was another on Bainbridge for $3.5k.
