New member here..

Postby El Taco » Thu Sep 27, 2012 3:12 pm

Howdy, y'all. I've got a 77 GL1000 that's currently spilled across the floor and all of the benches. I took a break from wet sanding the frame to create an account here, I just can't wait to be riding this thing up the mountain and giving the Harley guys something to look at.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
Great to see you're restoring a Classic Wing.
Post some pics of the finished bike when you can.

I've gone a little overboard in the polishing department. I wouldn't call it a restoration, more a rustoration. I'm putting it together from three parts bikes, one of which is no longer with us. The 83 GL1100 donated all that would interchange in good taste, then went on to fund materials for the rest of the project.

There's a 78 GL1000 behind me here in the shop, and a 75 back in Odessa, Texas behind Dad's house. When it's all said and done, I'd like to have the emergency kicker from the original 77 engine, as well as the heads, intakes, and carbs from the 75. I've been into 70s Hondas since my teenage years, and this being my third Wing out of six, I decided to build this one for touring the southwest with the missus.

I've just noticed that the speedometer cable changed sides between 77 and 78. The fender doesn't seem to look right, either.

Welcome Eltaco from the U.P. of Michigan. I was wondering when you were going to get around to the intro instead of the weather reports. Good luck with your projectand keep us updated with pics.

Well, I'm nearly ready to mount the back wheel, and I'll be back to having a rolling chassis. I posted about the rain to keep my mind off of the tank. It's back in the frame now, along with the inner and rear fender, and the final drive and shaft are back in place.

It's still coming down.

As another relative noob, Welcome from the northeast USA (upstate new york where it is mostly rural farm country - see this month's Rider magazine) Having done many resto projects on bikes and cars I decided to skip the phase you are in and go directly to riding by buying a late model winger. He He. Good luck and really nice work - keep at it.

Upstate is nice, looks just like western Mass to me. I call it driving through the tree tunnel. You must be fortunate, I'm sure the locals know the best places to really get out there and enjoy the state. I got to see it on I-90. As a former make ready hand, I used to uncrate new Wings and put the accessories on them, like the CBs and CD changers, antennas, fog lights, and such.
