Postby littlebeaver » Mon Oct 08, 2012 1:03 pm

Please don't change anything on this site, The Saunders site went and made some changes, the A to Z posts was one of my favorites, now I can't even find it.... Wingadmin...Please don't change your settings and go and change things, I felt lost when I went back to the SS site and I don't wish to do that here.....Thanks man.... :D

Didn't that site get sold to someone else? Probably why the changes.

Ya it's being run by some one else but the deal was it was going to stay basically the same. Haven't checked it out myself. The one thing I didn't like is the lack of organization like we have here. All the tech information was in one forum and not broken up into the different bikes over the last 35+ years.

So I'm with the OP - maintain the status quo here.

One thing I would like is info to pop up on a mouse over when on a list.

Steve's site got sold to a large company that makes its money by buying up successful forums, then plastering them with advertisements. Frequently the forums are then left to wither and die with a modicum of "management" by someone whose job it is to be responsible for running around 10-20 forums. I really hope the Sanders site doesn't end up with that fate. I already notice annoying ads popping up in every image over there. I haven't spent much time there myself in the last few months.

I don't tend to make many changes here, and when I do, it's not major - and it's usually an improvement. I made a subtle improvement to the classified ads database this past weekend, in that when you select an area to search from, it also includes the surrounding areas as well. That's behind the covers.

More overt are a few changes I made today:

- HTML titles and descriptions of some of the pages have changed to better describe their content
- The "www" version of the site is now deprecated. If you visit a "www" page, it will redirect you to the "non-www" version of the page (note that it will always say goldwingdocs.com in the title now, not http://www.goldwingdocs.com)
- I've added the "10 most recent postings" to the bottom of the default landing page at http://goldwingdocs.com with a short summary of each of the posts.

cbx - which lists are you talking about, and what would you have it pop up?

I suspected that the saunders site was bought out, I am not impressed with the new format. My alternator conversion post has lost all the pics that go with the text. I didnt think that once it was uploaded I would ever have to rebuild the article. If I am going to redo it then I think it should be posted here instead, what do you think Scott?do you have some room for another how to article? 8-)

Scott please keep the site just the way it is,cause how are we going to razz Littlebeaver if we dont have a forum like this to do it on. I have been on other sites and can say as a fact we have the best bunch of guys and gals here. You dont see any bad stuff on here and everybody behaves them self's,never have I seen you have to warn any body about anything. Says a lot about the site and the members on it,and I am happy to be a member of Goldwingdocs. Hal

I didn't like the new format either! Especially the fact that pics don't appear with the post. You need to click on the doodad to see the pics! Change is OK when it's done well. This change detracts from a previously good site. Too bad.

To be fair, the Saunders site is improving every day as the bugs are found and worked out. It seems that some people just don't like change. It is a completely different format but seems to be gaining acceptance daily. I, for one, am willing to give it a chance. The biggest complaint is all the ads that have appeared to some members. Did I say ads? Hmmm! They can be eliminated by setting up personal preferences properly. I see absolutely no ads with my setup within the site and my browser setup. However I do have a concern with the new ownership not being personally involved like Steve was. He is still taking an active roll in administering the site but for how long??? Time will tell. I just don't see it going away anytime soon.

Wow...I haven't been on there in quite a while, I didn't realize they (VerticalScope, the people who bought the site) had converted the entire forum over to the same vBulletin system that they use for all of the other forums they run. I guess it makes sense, they wouldn't want to have to support a million different forum formats.

They're also using those horribly annoying "AdChoices" ads that pop-up advertisements when you mouse over certain words in the text. Wow...that site is now so annoying to browse, I wouldn't last long there anymore. So sad. I hate to see that once-great site turned into an ad-churning corporate shill site.

Incidentally, this is the company that bought them: http://www.verticalscope.com/powersports/site-list.html

They're the same people behind http://www.goldwingowners.com as well.

And of course, always more than enough room for more how-to articles! :) Let it rip! :)

Todd, go for it man, I was always very surprised that you didn't post it here ...Guys here will love it...This alternator conversion thing has given me a sigh of relief, ...55 amps of power...Far more than I can use and yes on our 1100's...Todd and Dan Filipi convinced me that it was a good mod. I listened and made it happen...I love it.. Todd, you're instructions are great, I would love to see you post it here..We can call it Todd's repost.... That man said it was fine...The light is green man..

Here is a link to some help files at Saunders. http://www.goldwingfacts.com/forums/4-m ... works.html
You can go into the USER CP section to set up your profile and preferences. All of the ads and the Adchoices hover feature can be eliminated for members only. Like I said, I don't see any ads at all.

Wow they run a lot of sites! I like Steves site (found it years ago) for the event section, just went on a nice 1/2 day ride to meet & greet about 10 from that forum and had a good lunch and ride. I'm new to Arizona and wanted to meet some of the guys. I know you have a post about possibly having events too and I think it would be good.
