New owner of a 1982 Gold wing

Postby jrwox » Sat Oct 27, 2012 8:40 pm

I just bought a "new" Gold Wing. It's in nice shape but needs some work. I need to check the timing, and possibly repair the carbs, because it fires but won't start. The articles and how to's here should help me. I'm fixing it to ride an ironbutt ride next year. I last did one in '07(1500 miles in under 36 hours) and want to do more next year. It only has 40K on it so I should have lots of miles on it. Just wanted to say hi and thanks for the invaluable information given on the web site!

He only wanted to hang and say "hi" so "Hi!" from the NW. Had a silver 82 lowered that I bought several years ago, then moved it to my wife, was a great bike. Ran like a top for several years until she became afraid of the weight. Good throaty bike, you could hear the exhaust note from it.

Enjoy the ride and your new friends on this board.

Welcome. These are by and far a great bunch of guys and there is a good knowledge base to lean on.

Another great MC deal. It surprises me how many cheap deals there are on older Wings. Considering the book value of them and what people seem to sell them for, I'm not sure what to really make of that. I understand the concept of something not being worth more than someone is willing to pay for it regardless of any book value, but it can't be because there is a soft MC market because it isn't. I only paid $700 for my '77 and it's in amazing survivor condition, well worth the price paid. This $500 deal is just one of an increasing amount of deals for under $1000 on Wings that I'm seeing out there.

Good for us for sure.

Thanks for the positive feedback on my purchase. I thought I got a great deal and am glad to hear from others the same thing. It also came with a nice cover and extra filters to sweeten the deal.

Nice score! With that mileage it's just getting broke in. I'm suprised I'm the first saying this but someones gotta. Be sure you change the timming belts. I'm sure you know the rest of the drill. If not just ask, someone will answer! :D

Hello from Oz. Your new GW looks like it was a great buy for those dollars. Keep letting us know your progress, and pictures are always good

Also welcome to this great site.I liked your pictures, but don't see any volt meter, does it have one ?
As you can see I have a 1982 A, now four wheels, story behind that set up! ;)
But so glad I can still ride...I'm sure you will be waiting for the warmer WX. 8-)

Yesterday was about 32 F,and the first time my cycle didn't start.I ran out of battery juice, must be my baby

I am going to go through it because I have no idea what has, or hasn't, been done including timing belts. It does not have a voltmeter, something I plan on adding this winter. I'm just so excited to work on this! I have a radiant heated garage so no matter how cold it gets I'll be in the garage thinking of Spring! I also have a little Honda Reflex scooter that I used to run back and forth to town. It also needs the motor pulled for an oil leak(long story). So, I can't devote my whole time to this. But, the wing is my long distance ride for next year and I want it to be perfect!!!! I very well might be asking some questions from the very knowledgeable people on this forum on what to do/watch for. Thanks again for the feedback! Good people here!!!
