T'was the Night Before Christmas. UK version

Postby Sidcar » Sun Dec 23, 2012 9:20 am

I used a regional dialect for some of this, translations provided on request.

’Twas the night before Christmas
And all round the shed
The snow it fell thickly
Making sound seem quite dead.

I was fettling the Norton
The best that I could
But the crankcase was leaking
And the tyres were no good

The Feast of St Steven
I needed it next
But the clutch would keep slipping
It had me quite vexed

As I struggled with spanners
And with pliers and with tape
A sound in my head
It began to take shape

It was way in the distance
But gathering nearer
Every rattle and thump
Getting clearer and clearer

The hair on my neck
Rose up with a tingle
The sound was that
Of an old sidevalve single

But something was wrong
With the beat of this motor
A firing stroke missing
Its turn in the rota

I looked out the door
And up at the sky
To the strangest of sites
That I ever did spy

An old BSA Sloper
Attached to a chair
Was popping and banging
As it flew through the air

In a red riding suit
All trimmed in fur white
The rider he made
An unusual sight

He circled the chimney pots
Not once but thrice
Then made a soft landing
On the patio, real nice

“Worro ah kid”
Said the sprightly old gent
Speaking with a thick
Black Country accent

An yow gorra mag
Forra 493 Slope
This ode un’s knackered
It ba gorra ‘ope

Are you really Santa
I gasped disbelief
Your home should be Lapland
Not Cradley Heath

Om in a ‘urry, ode chop
Said this strange Santa Clause
Om late as it is
And I’ve no time to pause

Well, he might be in luck
I thought to myself
I’ve got an old mag
At the back of the shelf

I picked up the mag
And blew off the dust
It gave a good spark
Despite the rust

The mag it was fitted
In nine minutes quick
Then the engine swung over
With one good long kick

It fired up straight away
With a great cloud of clag
“That’s bostin” said Santa
Ow much f’the mag

It’s free and gratis
Above the noise I did shout
It’s been a real pleasure
To help Santa out

Yow’m a gud un, ah kid
Was his reply
Then he climbed on the bike
And rose into the sky

The engine noise grew
To a terrible clammer
I cried “Goo on Santa
Gi’it sum ‘ammer”

Away over roof tops
In the night sky he sped
Whilst I idly musing
Trudged back to the shed

Santa had been a
Pleasant distraction
But the crankcase and tyres
Now demanded some action

I stepped through the doorway
To stop and to stare
At the transmogrified Norton
That stood gleaming there

The tyres were all new
And the crankcase was clean
It was in the best state
That I’d ever seen

As I stood gawping
A voice started to bawl
Ta’ra ma mon
Happy Christmas to all

Sid

Hi Mag. About two hrs on a good day? I've noticed several members here not far away.

Brilliant!
( a translation post might be in order for our overseas 'cussins' ! )

Although living in Scotland, I hail from Worcester, so the 'Brummigum' (Birmingham) type accent brings back some memories!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

Though a couple hours different, all depends on what Mother Nature throws, I need to get back in the garage so my bike is rolling again (she is rolling now, just no plastic clothing so she is a little unimaginative right now, lol).
