My newest money pit as I received her.

Postby twostrokes48 » Wed Dec 26, 2012 10:37 pm

Picked this up for under a grand. Needs some carb work, a clutch, tires and cosmetics and should have a runner...37k miles on it. Also has the hard bags which I have already removed for now.

I think she will clean up pretty nice.

Very nice. I agree, get rid of the fairing and trunk. I'm looking at a '76 on Craigslist right now with a Windjammer. I was told I would need some more parts to put the headlight back the way it came stock.

Al old bikes are money pits. I bought an '85 LTD for $800, and now have over $3000 into it, as well as hundreds of hours of work. Now I've decided I picked the wrong bike, and have decided to get a carbed 1200. I can use a lot of the new parts I put on the LTD on it. Fuel injection is just not for me.

Don't know how long it will be before I am riding the GL1000, but hopefully (fingers crossed) I see my cardiologist tomorrow and may get a clearance to ride. If so, with the weather we are having, may very well be up that way real soon.

Just a little update. Have slowly started working on the wing...Have the exhaust and headers off, all plastic off, fairing off, tote box off, oil drained, water drained, getting ready to pull the radiator next. Spent today wirebrushing the ton of rust on the header pipes so I will be able to clean them up enough to repaint them.

The trip to the cardiologist didn't go as I planned....Did NOT get the clearance to ride yet.. He was very unhappy with results of the tests that were run. So now I am scheduled for a cardiac Cath on the 12th...He will also be ready to place stints he thinks I am going to need. He then says if the arrhythmias don't clear up, will look at pacemaker....So I have been missing some beautiful riding weather here lately...Boo Hoo....But, maybe I can get the 75 ready by late spring. Also have to get my 98 listed and sold so I can trike out the other 1500 I bought..Just gonna put a towpac type kit on it for when the wife goes with me on long trips.Don't want to take the landing gear outfit off the 98 to trike it, as then I would have to try to sell the landing gear system by itself. Plus it looks like a real pain to get it all off without screwing anything up. It is a shame, the 98 is a pristine bike with only 30000 miles on it. The other has 77k. Anyway...wish me luck

You are traveling an interesting journey my friend....a GW with only 33k miles, you sure you wanna get rid of her? She just started, ugh, that is too bad. Wish I had a little more room in my garage, I can ride one and fix the other.....hmmm, I have been thinking about that.

Well, keep working on the older wing, she will be a beauty.

Just for planning purposes and parts purchase....Would like some suggestions on what if any other things I might consider doing to this once I get the engine out...Hate to do things more than once. Some considerations I have thought about is opening up the starter and rebuilding it even though there is no problem with it....Is there anything else any of you can think of that I should do while the engine is out??? Of course the carbs get a rebuild, valves adjusted, clutch replaced...What else??
Also I might add, this is the first time I have attempted major work on a bike in well over 20 years....I quit doing my own work when my body said it didn't want to get down on the ground anymore...and my wallet said you can pay someone to do that....
But, my wallet now says ....you can't afford to have someone do that...so I just tell the rest of my body to shut up and say we won't be down here very long before a break.

Pop the little cover off and at least check for lateral end play on the water pump impeller.
It's a good time to replace the timing belts too.
By all means,do clean and lube the starter.
Replacing the clutch????Was there a problem with the original....Mine had over 150k miles with no problems.

Belts already done, will check waterpump. The clutch is almost gone, cannot be adjusted anymore...that is the main reason I am pulling the engine out, that plus cleaning rust and painting frame. Just cleaning it all up.

Looks like you will have a sweet ride when you get done. You started with a pretty decent bike so it shouldn't take much to get it roadworthy .

That's my hope, I have actually ridden it a few miles up and down the hwy running some cleaner through the carbs to try to clean them up. But, think they are too far gone and I have ordered the rebuild kits for them. That and the clutch are supposed to be the only real running problems. Since I plan on keeping this one forever, I am going to repair or replace as much as I can afford. So, it is getting torn all the way down. Now putting it back together, that's a whole diffeent ball game..hah

I guess the muffler will be next. Even though it is not terrible, I'm gonna strip it and start over.

Update: Since this is kinda running as a dual subject thread (me, and the bike), thought I would let you guys know I got clearance to ride Monday. The cath went well, procedure wise. blockage over 50% (not so good) should be more than 70% for stents (good news). SO, a major change in medications....the bradycardia and PVC's (random heart beats that screwup the rhythm) is a different problem...I will start wearing a heart monitor for about a month 24/7.
The doc wants to start me on a new med. It is supposed to stop the PVC's, which he feels will make me heart purr like a Wing. But, this med has some NASTY side effects, some of which are fatal. When you total up all those 1% her 2% there the perecentage gets pretty high that I could have some of these nasty side effects. So I havn't made up my mind yet if I want to take them. I think I am going to wait until after the month with the monitor and let them see just how bad this is. I may want to either put up with the effects I get from the bradycardia, or jump directly to the pacemaker. My daughter-in-law is a PhD Pharmacist. I am having her do some deeper research on this med for me before I give it a shot.

I have also been down with a bad case of bronchitis following what started as just a bad cold. 3 days in bed, up and down temps, coughing my head off and finely went to the doctor this morning. Now on antibotics, steroids, inhaler and some codine hopped up cough syrup. Hopefully will be fully functional by weekend. Hope to get the Wing out (the one that runs) and take a ride. Might just try to hook up with LittleBeaver for that if he ain't too busy.

Had to stop working on the muffler, have it about 75% stripped, if I feel better tomorrow, hopefully will get that finished and the first coat of primer on it.

Good news! I go walking every day for about an hour, or 30 mins if the weather is not so good. I have arteriosclerosis (chalky bits in the arteries), and a 40% blockage of the main artery. But the surgeon says to keep walking, and you should be able to keep going for a good while yet.

So the dogs like to go walking, and we have a number of routes to try out, and it keeps me better than sitting on my rear end, and keeping a bit better health wise.

I still have the dream of being shot by a jealous husband at 98. :D

Yes, I try to keep the walking up also...I don't really have a safe place to walk as I live on a highway. Although it is a 2 lane country road where I am at, since the oil boom in this area, there are lots and lots of 18 wheelers driving like a bat out of hell all day long. So, I use the treadmill. I do 30+ minutes at 3-3.5mph on elevation 4 every day if possible. Have been off for past couple weeks but hope to get back on my routine in a few days. I do try to exercise, eat right and use my knowledge as an RN to keep myself healthy...Unfortunately I did not live such a lifestyle my first 40 years...it was more like anything and everything goes cuz I probably will never see 35 anyway...heavy drinking, chain smoker, ran the streets of Manila,Cavite,Olongapo, Subic City and Angeles City for 10 years owning three night clubs during that time, while still working 60 hours a week in the Navy..so I was pretty much a basket case by the time I was 30. The medical retirement was not from battle injuries in a war zone, it was from too many years in the pleasure zone running wide open 24/7. Had my first heart attack at 30 and major pancreas shut down at 40. So I feel I have been living on borrowed time for a long time now and try to take care of myself best I can. Gee I babble a lot don't I.

No, that is not babble! That is information. We all have our issues, so are health, some are physical, and some are mental. You learn to live within your capabilities, and as long as you dont get your ambitions mixed up with your capabilities, you should live a happy life. In the meantime, just ride the GW, and smell the early morning smells of cows, chickens, and life. Why even the smell of a wood fire can make a different to your senses. Have a happy day :D

Well I do smell the "steers", no cows...have three of them about 14 months old now. Bottle babies to start. Smell chickens, have a dozen chickens, half dozen guinea foul, half dozen ducks, over a dozen different parrots, 7 cats, 2 dogs, 6 grown pigs (heading for the freezer), and 5 pigletts about 2 weeks old now. The pigs I have about 100yards away down wind from the house. That is a smell that can never be pleasant. lol...
It's time to plow/till the garden, but have had no rain..so ground is dry as a bone, and hard as a rock. Had rain in the forecast 3 times in the past 10 days but it all missed my house. Will probably plow it up anyway this next week. Least get the weeds killed out.

Just got started back on the paint stripping, and son showed up. So, didn't get much done. Maybe tomorrow, anyway, will hopefully be feeling better then anyway. Too many projects, not enough time...But never bored.
