i think my goldwing is cursed.

Postby mainline-coffee » Fri Jan 18, 2013 1:53 am

i think my goldwing is cursed. sence day one my project 84 1200 interstate has been troubled. i got it after the po wrecked it. i stripped it nude and replaced the front end,re wired and re built or replaced almost every destroyed/worn part on it. a major pain on my part due to the mc wreck i was in nine months ago. when i got it running agian i took it to a mc shop a city over to do the paperwork on it and on the return it overheated and i stabbed the radiator in a last ditch effort to save the engine. weeks go by and i keep working on it and i take a trip to danville ky about fifty miles from home. i went down there to visit my sposor and bs around for a bit and headed home. going home i am six miles out of danville when my elec cuts out and i died on the highway,i left a note saying it was not abbandoned just broken and i would pick up in my truck the next day. i get there the next day and it had been stolen wrecked and towed the next town over! six days and $265 later i got it back. that was a month ago. i am finishing up fixing all the things the assbag broke when stealing it and i am wondering whats next! this bike has caused so many probloms in my life these last few months.i finished bolding up the sidebags after repainting yesterday and its about time something else breaks...it is a love hate relationship i guess...keeps me on my toes.

if you got this far and were expecting a lesson in morals or something than i am sorry to dissapoint. i just needed to vent and all my friends are sick of me bitching about it but what can i say,i love old ugly and rusty!

I so totally understand what you are going through, believe me when I say this, I understand, my bike did me the same way for the first year,,once I got on these sites, I took the knowledge I had already and made it so much better by reading and learning more stuff..The Carbs gave me a fit..I cussed at it many times, but never did I even think of giving up..Too stuburn for that crap...I read guys having the same issues as I did, I took advice, I learned a boat load on the electrical system, now I have most of the wire colors memorized, and I really have a better picture of how things work.. I converted to the poorboy alt. mod..on my 1100..Thanks to people on here..And other sites, I re painted my bike..talk about a love affair..My wife got all jealous and such.. It's good you get upset because once you figure every little thing out about this bike and fix everything you can jump on it and ride it and not worry about nothing man... You are being tested...Sounds to me like you're passing the test so far..

Wait...you get a fixer, love to fix things, and then bitch about it when it does not work right? That is majority of the peeps on this board (someone always working on something), so you are not alone. I did not have all the issues and challenges you had, but definitely understand your frustration and such. I can say this, once you get that ride going again, you will probably be smiling again, at least a little smirk ;)

Sorry to hear of your problems but you are not alone in this.

Moral to learn?
If you haven't yet,
Get down and get right with your Creator first and foremost

There are others in this world that are bottom dwellers, no matter where you go, go back to step one.

these bikes don't like not being riden. They get real Cranky. Just have to take it to the next level, get down on the floor with it and tell it that it will all work out and she'll feel better soon, ya she's been miss treated by others but you want to love her to give her all the login she needs.

So did the battery go dead on the trip back? Did you test the stator output and the connectors that fail and are known problems on these statored wings?

Someone needs to get one of these for your bike.

No you can't buy it yourself....it has to be given to you.
Guaranteed to keep the road gremlins away from the bike.....So I've heard ;)

Well other than the unfortunate stolen part, the rest could have happened to any of us.I understand your feeling of bad vibes but believe it's more bad luck and that beautiful bike will prove it to you if you give it a chance.

Lourdes is a place in France that miracles are supposed to occur if you bathe in the 'sacred' waters of the grotto. It has become a shrine for those that are ill, and are in need of a miracle to overcome their affliction. He was suggesting that if you took your GW to Lourdes it might get cured. But it seems that you only needed a "little miracle" and some perspiration to get it going, and you have achieved both of these without any other assistance. I hope the gremlins have left you and your GW in good spirits :)

Just my two cents but "You get out what you put in". These bikes are old, mine is an 80. Took it 1800 miles round trip last year no problems. I spent 700 in parts (tires, belts, hoses, fuel line, filters, oil, antifreeze, you name it) and a ton of time. Go through as much as you can slowly and take your time, do the best to do a quality job. While waiting for parts, I went through as many electrical connections cleaning them and adding a little electrical grease. That's the kind of TLC these old bikes need. If you invest it will pay off big time. These bikes will take you farther than any other bike with less maintenance and for cheap.

Jocop is right, just take your time and give it a lot of TLC.
I have an 84 gl1200 and I had to put four figures easy into it just to bring it up to speed.
I had to deal with a rotten frame/exhausts/carbs/electrical/bearings/ just name it.
I did the work myself and many times I was looking for someone just to cuss at.
Now I have it all shiny, chromed and blinged.
what started off as two of us has grown to five of us with old gold wings.
they range in years from 1978 to 1984 naked to aspencade , we get together and ride on weekends.
We might ride 200 miles to eat BBQ and ride back, it does not matter.
Lately we have been re-doing the stereo systems on the bikes.
I have been taking advantage of the LED lights to bling my Wing because they are easy on the alternator. My son calls my Goldwing my retirement rocket.
Nothing beats the beauty of old Goldwings that have been restored.
Some of the Harley owners get a little jealous of our Old Gold when they see us out there Rolling.
Its all Good

I hope I don't get cursed or my bike while I am workin through my 75 wing. But believe me I do know what you are going through. I am still dealing with that stuff on my 72 CB750k2...I went out to start and run it awhile the other day and battery appeared dead....no problem, I put the charger on it and went about my business and figured I would get back to it later. So few hours later, pulled the charger off, showed full charge (it is a 3 month old, new battery). Turned the key, hit the starter button, nothing, not even a click. All I got was the lights dimming. Didn't have time to mess with it, so now I have to start digging. I figure it is the starter button as I have had problems with it in the past so will start there.

Did make headway (a little) on the 75 wing today....got the so totally rusted up (BAD) exhaust system off the bike without breaking off any studs on the engine...So, step one out of the way for the engine removal.

Also, I have had a 84, 1200..Great bike...the only reason I moved up to the 1500 was to get reverse...but I loved that 84..it was a great ride. I would seriously consider doing the poor boy conversion, even if you left it disconnected until your stator went out, it would be there ready and waiting with just the flip of a switch....I lost mine just outside of Las Vegas on my way back to San Antonio....made for a very long ride back...ride one hour, stop and charge battery one hour, ride one hour, stop and charge battery one hour...for about 1150miles...but hey, she got me home..
