my goldwing is smoking

Postby JTBailey » Tue Mar 05, 2013 1:07 pm

I just bought my first goldwing yesterday. I test rode it and rode it home. No problems. I went out this morning and fired it up and it started smoking. I let it run for about 10 minutes and it smoked the whole time. Any ideas? Head gasket?

I'll bet you 47 cents that you parked it overnight on the side stand didn't ya.
All mine does this too....If it's annoying....Park the bike on the center stand over night...
Kinda like the gum on the bed post song.Maybe not. :?:

It's oil creping around the cylinders on the low side of the engine (left side)and being burnt off.
Absolutely normal.

If it was on the center stand all night...replace the oil seals on the valve stems.

My 1100 would clear out the whole street of mosquitoes after a week on the side stand....I thought I was doing a public service.

It was on the center stand. But the guy I bought it from hadn't rode it in almost a year. I'm gonna do a tune up on it. Thanks.

I have considered calling my bike 'The Bug Bomb' for exactly this reason. I must have been lucky with my first bike. It was an 82 GL1100i and I never had issue with any oil burning on start up, expect after getting her running again after being in winter storage. My current 83 GL1100A seems to have made up for that luck. :o

Yes. It should not last much longer than it takes for the bike to warm up. The best fix is to put the bike up on the centre stand if it will be parked for an extended period of time.

Continuously smoking on Every start up is not normal.
When the bike has a normal oil level and left overnight on the center stand it should not smoke.
Now considering it's been set up for a few years,I'd be inclined to run some sea foam through it,change the oil again and put on a few hundred miles over a few weeks to get it limbered up and then see if it continues.
Tend to preventive mantiance first.A bit of smoking may clear up with use.

Don't get too nervous.if it ran ok on the test run ( not bellering smoke) it most likely will be fine.
These bikes can have in excess of 200,000 miles on them if well taken care of.

Pull the plugs and inspect them,,I bet they are oily...The smoke,,,What color is it? It's not white I hope...I'm sure you know this but also shut the gas valve off when parked everytime.. :D

Check the oil level, If its really high you might have had gas flowing into the cylinder over night if you left the petcock turned on because of a leaky float valve. 8-)

Ride safe, Todd
Over night campers welcome
