Any hints on how to clean up rust spots on chrome tail light

Postby GL1100Newbie » Sun Mar 17, 2013 8:40 pm

Any suggestions on what to use to clean up rust spots on a 1981 Gold Wing tail light. I tried automotive chrome cleaner, but the rust is still showing through.

Thanks

I use a paste called Simichrome. It comes in a yellow tube. I have found it at motorcycle shops and some automotive places stock it. I believe the box is yellow and red. Great stuff and a little bit goes a long way. Works really well on chrome. Good luck!

There are also Autosol, Flitz, Ouator (pronounced water) and some other very good products. Every one of them seems to do just a bit different, but all pretty much work well.

If you still have rust showing, my suggestion would be to add more compound. That will at least leave whatever remains black instead of rust colored.

It would be nice to be able to see how badly rusted your housing is so we can better gauge whether it is doable with what was mentioned or not.

For small amounts of rust not deeply imbedded in the metal, the compounds already mentioned all work fine. If the rust is too deep, for lack of a better descriptive word, nothing short of a rust converter will be of much value. If the rust has taken hold significantly, nothing short of rechroming or replacing will work.

Most of the good rust converters turn the metal black as they do away with rust. This is not the most desirable thing for chrome. One turns the metal white and I've found it works pretty well. This might be an alternative for you so at least the housing doesn't look too badly rusted. The product is made by POR-15 and is called "Metal Ready" Any supplier that sells POR-15 Rust Encapsulator paint will have this product available. It is applied just as any other de-rusting product and let sit for a day.

If it's just surface, you can get rid of it fairly easily by rubbing it with crinkled up aluminum foil.

Order you some oxalic acid off ebay. It is in a powder form like surgar. Put one cup in 5 gallons of hot water. Put your chrome pieces into bucket and come back 12-14 hours later. Rinse the chrome off and polish. That simple.
No scrubbing or scratching the chrome.
Just remember, the pits that rusted will still be there so polish it good.

++ on the Autosol but I'm liking the oxalic acid recommendation. Love chemicals.
